Sky Atlas Walkthrough for the Dwarf 3 Smart telescopes
With the Dwarf 3 immient release DwarfLabs has been hard at work developing an improved Sky Atlas for the Dwarf App. This atlas works for both the Dwarf II and Dwarf 3 (and I'm assuming Dwarf 4, 5, 6, when they eventually get released in the years to come) in order to find targets in the night sky and automatically have the small smart telescopes goto those targets and start imaging, which really makes the whole process a lot more fun and enjoyable for those new to astronomy and astrophotography!

$449 Dwarf III Smart Telescope - Is there a reason NOT to buy one?
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 2 měsíci
So the Dwarf III Smart Telescope is finally here at a suprisingly low price of under $500 ($449 early bird) which according to the specifications offers a significant improvement over the Dwarf II of a larger optical train (35mm vs. 24mm), update Starvis 2 sensor from Starvis 1, and you can image up to 60 seconds which is 4x longer than the orginal Dwarf II's 15 second exposure cap. That is going to be an interesting test (or mod) is to have it setup 24/7 (or as close as possible to that) which basically needs to ensure the unit is water resistant enough. It won’t be waterproof as it should never be emerged in water. But rain… hopefully it will be able to handle some of that.

    DWARF LABS accually ripped of thosecwho bought a D2. The original app mucked and when they did improve it, took 12 months to do so, so left us with a poor app, now all of a sudden come out with a D3 and feels a more compete app. Why was it not like this before the D3, yet D2 owners had to put up with a buggy bad app for practically the life cycle of the D2. Think they only got cracking updating the app as a hook to buy the D3. So they take so long with updates it maybe D4 we get another major update. They hold the record for the least amount of updates and all the other smart scope manufacturers regularly update their apps, so don't feel ripped off. Also they still have not updated their data base which only has 500 objects you can pick from. Seestar is a far better product, and app far superior, with regular updates. And don't believe in half these reviews as they are influenced by companies to premote their products which often get for free, or use before anyone else, so of course give glowing reviews

    I’m toggling in my mind between buying the SeeStar s50 or the Dwarf 3, from what I have seen, the images you get are rather similar and with the SeeStar , these seem to be straight out of the box, but there are features in the Dwarf 3 that aren’t available with the SeeStar. I am a total beginner and novice and want to get into astrophotography , but I find post photo processing daunting , frustrating and complicated, I have tried it on my ordinary photographs but I just can not get my head around it. I use an ipad now and this has a very basic but uncomplicated photo adjustment program built in. So what is my main deciding factor is, which is the most user friendly and needs the least complicated post photo processing to bring out the photographs to good acceptable standard … which in your view would this be?

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia Před 16 dny

      SeeStarS50 is the most user friendly of the two and you can get great photos with an hour or two of exposure on many popular targets. I have a video coming out (maybe today, maybe the weekend) where I show more in-depth Astrophotography sessions of a few hours on various targets I’ve been doing over the summer. And the SeeStarS50 is available today. The dwarf 3 looks on paper to be very good, but its predecessor the Dwarf 2 is more a “beginner/intermediate” device whereas SeeStars50 is dead easy to use.

    • @coldeb8911
      @coldeb8911 Před 7 dny

      @@EmberSkyMedia Many thanks for your reply, I actually went with and ordered the D3 , from what I have heard from many sources the D3 will be as easy to use as the SeeStar, they have apparently made it a much more a user friendly ‘Click&Go’ unit with a lot more of the processing being done automatically in the D3 its self. The Search and find is going to be much easier for beginners and will be able to photograph much larger DSO’s whole ( which the SeeStar can’t do at the moment) automatically. I think they have looked at the SeeStar and thought “🤔hmm , we need to capture that novice market “… we will have to wait and see of course, especially me since I have one on order, but I’m crossing my fingers it delivers what has been said about it.

      I'll have an update video soon, but they have switched over to manufacturing the Dwarf 3, which is an improvement over the Dwarf 2, so my guess is there may be a few along the production route but they are no longer manufaturing the older model. They continue to update the Dwarf 2 firmware and software app, we just got an AI Enhance which I've been testing. 2 things I can’t understand about the DWARF III : -why a non removable battery? Planned obsolescence? A strange choice in 2024. -the DWARF II was able to support a 512 Gb SD card. This one is limited to 128 Gb… why? Was about to buy it but now, I’m not sure.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia Před 2 měsíci

      I believe the thinking was "less ports, more outdoor resistance" as to the choices to internalize the battery and SD card. Given that the Dwarf 3 can run pluggged for a long time (indefinetaly?) and connect to WIFI the idea is it becomes an outdoor all around observatory you can set-up and leave for days/weeks of automated observations etc. With the Dwarf 3 the only port is the USB-C port and I'm hopeful that's well sealed.

    Wait a sec, can this make the Dwarf able to track a satellite? Im going to assume no, but it may in fact be possible, although certainly not easy. Just wondering... for science. Like if you can track something like that, you could po9ssibly track a closer comet. The speed of tracking is probably going to be hindered by the slower cpu speed of the Dwarf 2 vs Dwarf 3 but again, its likely possible. It would be fun to attempt to get ISS but with a cheaper budget telescope, my expectations are based and not very high on getting anything more than a smear or a dot on the screen lol. If anything, I would like Dwarf to be able to view planets clearly in the future. Im not convinced either Dwarf 2 or 3 will ever be able to see Saturn clearly. To wrap it up, Im not here to bust on the Dwarf series, because Dwarf Labs really makes a quality piece of kit with these things. Everything they were designed for, they do well. I have been very happy with my Dwarf 2 so far, and I look forward to what improvements the 3 will bring in the future. Lastly, if you are running out of battery with your Dwarf, I HIGHLY suggest hooking up to a decent portable power bank while out in the field so you can sustain longer runtimes.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the indepth reply, a lot to unpack there but here are my thoughts. 1. Dwarf 3 in equitorial mode (which it will have) I think will be better equipped to track faster moving objects than the Dwarf II. Not sure as fast as ISS, Tiangong, and Hubble but we can hope. 2. To see planets with surface and cloud detail clearly requires a lot of apature (my 8" telescope is just good enough). However particularly saturn the rings are currently becoming "on edge" at our vantage point so I'd hold off until 2026 to attempt to image it if you want the rings, but then I think larger smart telescopes will be on the market. 3. Yes, in and ideal world I'd just connect it up to the mains or a large battery, but alas I did not. One of the reasons I'm looking forward to the Dwarf 3's larger internal battery, then with a pack and it I could go for signfiicantly longer period or even connect to the mains and just run all the time (well with the scheduling feature they annouced, when its dark). Again thank you for your thoughts, It will be fun to see how more capable the Dwarf 3 will be but these app updates breath life into the Dwarf II as well!

    Thanks, but no thanks! Dwarf buggy app needs to be fixed before lunching a new hardware. Have both Dwarf 2 and Seestar S50 and S50 works flawless and I wish Dwarf app would work as good. I wouldn't mind pay way more for smart telescope with at least 70mm aperture, 280-350mm FL, and 8MP and with optional software feature built-in to mount to proper use it in equatorial configuration. Maybe Dwarf 5 Pro or Seestar 70EQ Pro?

    I received another $50 discount from Dwarf Labs since I had purchased a Dwarf2 from them. A good upgrade and will gift the Dwarf 2 to a family member so they can enjoy the night sky. Does anyone know what happened to Astro-Dwarf Adventures? Haven't seen him online in quite awhile.

  • @johnsmith-rd9rr
    @johnsmith-rd9rr Před 2 měsíci

    In all honesty, as a Dwarf 2 owner looking at the specs, its a AVOID. Why? It has MINIMAL improvements compared to the Dwarf 2 and pales compared to the Seestar, for the same money. It will be nice to see a real review from a non-paid Dwarf Labs content creator.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia Před 2 měsíci

      Just to be clear, Dwarf Lab didn't pay me to make this video (they didn't even know I made it until after), or any of my videos (they did send me a review unit to review but they didn't pay me to say anything in my videos). Improvements are not "MINIMAL" as larger optics + better sensor + EQ Mode 60 seconds should add up to significantly better images. And the ability to use the wide field camera as well is a nice bonus. Should Dwarf II users upgrade, that's a harder question to answer, depends on how much of an improvement it ends up being and if the SeeStar S50 is more your flavour. But honestly the Dwarf II is quite capable and if you own one be happy to use it and not worry about "should you upgrade" until we see some hands-on comparisons, then decide what direction is best for you.

  • @zalllon

    This improvement is great to see. I’m new to Astrophotography as a result of the cloudy solar eclipse experience (Niagara On The Lake, Ontario). I didn’t realize how expensive the hobby can be, as well as complicated. I was hoping to use one of my DSLRs and lenses, thinking I can do it for cheap, LOL. I’m currently in the process of building an OG Star Tracker (3D printed, open source software, about $230 Cdn spent). But, if an all in one, easy to travel with solution can be a gateway drug, and under $1K, it’s worth it. I’m hoping this update to the DWARF pushes for the next gen Seestar50, and get a bit more aperture and a slightly higher price, with the mosaic ability. Then I’ll get that.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah, not sure ZWO’s next SeeStar is going to be, a lot of speculation of S70, S80 or S100. I expect 80mm but it could still be another year or two away as that big of optics will need heavier motor drive to operate.

      @EmberSkyMedia Před 2 měsíci

      There are apparently 2 built-in filters and it should come with moasic mode. I’m hoping moasic gets some integration into Dwarf II, at the very least a basic system so it will take the overlapping photos but I doubt it will stack them in camera for the Dwarf II due to limited computing power.
