Radio Knob Mold Part 3 - Silicone Mold Making - Squirreland
zhlédnutí 255Před 4 měsíci
Today I made a simple silicone mold of a vintage radio knob. Some molds that I make are odd shapes and it would be very difficult to measure the exact amount of silicone needed to mix so I can complete that particular mold. When I pour silicone for a project in my shop, I generally have one or two smaller molds nearby in which to pour any excess silicone. Silicone is expensive and there is no r...

    I've made a few of these you definitely want to get a good compressor, I'd recommend ten gallons at least with a good HP/CFM. I hooked one up to an AC switch with a wireless remote, but with that, you have to turn it on and then manually turn it off for your blasts. If not, the solenoid gets left open and the ones on Amazon easily burn up and stop working. A wired momentary switch is probably better or a picoboo with a motion detector/trigger. For safety, I added a regulator from Harbor Freight ($5) and also a directional check valve (Amazon) where the quick connect goes on - that way no air can for whatever reason flow backwards. Experimenting this year with doing one using a 1/4 inch solenoid to do some smaller air blasts.

    Just a tip for you, when you stir your epoxy if you do it in a "figure 8" motion you will induce way less air than the normal "whipping" motion we are used to. Keeps the majority of the bubbles away. Great video!

      I'm glad that my video was helpful! One note from using them in practice is that guests, adults and children, would duck down and go under them as opposed to through them. If I made some more this way, I might make them a bit longer than 4ft 6in so people would just go through instead of crawling on the ground underneath.

    Hi! What about using 2.5 mm fiber board instead of plywood? Any concerns with doing that? It's 50% the price of OSB, which is why I ask 😅

    • @squirreland
      @squirreland Před 10 měsíci

      Fiber board is mostly made of water-soluble glue. Which means that the first time that it gets water on it, it'll basically melt. It might be cheaper in the short term, but in the long term it'll end up costing more when the fiber board has to be replaced due to moisture damage. I've had some of these plywood panels since 2007 when I did my dark ride and they're still in good condition. Basically, I build stuff for being used 50 years from now instead of building it to work for today and tomorrow. Also, guests can get scared, I have had them turn and try to run away and go face first into a wall panel. The plywood panel survived, the picture frame that was attached to it wasn't so lucky. The fiber board would probably have had a human shaped hole in it like a cartoon. I hope that this helps. I have a more videos on decorating panels. They might give a bit more insight into the benefits of the plywood. I also have several more videos about decorating panels coming down the line.

      It really depends on the size of the opening on the air tank. Everything that I used was 1/2" NPT. I'm sure a screenshot and helpful employee at a local hardware store would be enough to get all the right parts. Thank you for the kind words about my videos! I put a lot of work into them.

    Why not use an air compressor and a hose on the trigger?

    • @squirreland
      @squirreland Před 10 měsíci

      How many air compressors do you intend to buy? If I want to have this particular effect in 5 or 6 spots in my haunted house, that would be a lot of noisy compressors that are spread out all over the place. Personally, the way that I'd do it is to buy a single high volume compressor and connect multiple effects to it. That way I only have to insulate one location for the noise. Also, if I had the 1 compressor and only drew air from that tank, then used a 100 foot air hose leading from that single air tank, the air coming out of the end of that really long hose won't have any power. The purpose of the yellow air tank is so that the effect has plenty of localized reserve air to draw from. Plus, if I bought a compressor with a 25 gallon tank, that is the max amount of compressed air storage that I would have to run multiple effects at any one time. This adds an additional 5 gallons of space to store the potential energy. Also, If I just used the 1 tank, each time an effect goes off, it decreases the pressure in the tank. If I'm running an entire haunt off of just the 1 tank, the air might be too depleted to make something else work properly. Conversely, if I was running something like a hayride with a big property and everything was spread out, then yes, I would get more than one compressor and do things more like your suggestion. I hope that I explained this well. I'm not the best at explaining concepts like this.
