    Hello. A general sewing question. When do you ever need a zig-zag stich in upholstery? The machine I bought has this feature, but I'm not sure if I will ever need it.

    • @j9theupholsterer
      @j9theupholsterer Před 4 dny

      I have never had a zigzag option, so it hasn't been necessary for me. But I imagine there are uses for it in the upholstery and canvas world. If you're into the sail making end of things, it would likely be useful.

    I'm new to this, getting my walking foot machine in the mail in a few days. I'm going to start my first project on my own pontoon boat. I noticed you didn't steam the foam, is that something I should or shouldn't do ?

    • @j9theupholsterer

    Nicely made. Only one detail is missing. In between, you should stick a transparent adhesive tape around the side, so that water does not pass through, between the sewn materials😉

    • @j9theupholsterer
      @j9theupholsterer Před 7 dny

      Thank you for your feedback! I do not add that tape, I have found that the stitching generally seals up in a short time and doesn't leak enough to be a problem. But, I'm sure that varies depending on location, environmental factors, and canvas maintenance, so adding it is a great suggestion :)

      Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! My machine is a Chikon CK-8BL-1 and it's the only machine I currently use for everything. Some people like multiple machines for different purposes, but I'm happy with just this. Personal preference I guess, I'm also limited on space for having more than 1 in use. I'd probably hang on to the other machines and see how you like the long arm overall before selling any others, but it can definitely do all of the things. My only issue is that it's a stretch to reach the wheel on the right, but my arms aren't very long haha. The table top is 1/8" ABS sheets screwed to a plywood top and is awesome to work on :)

I wanted to find a used one, but there were none available for me at the time. You have a discipline to your work and repetitive technique that is really worthy of emulating. I also watched one video of the man making a tarp for a small boat. Love the way he did it wrong side out so it was easy to mark and pin or staple and that the yardage ran the long way. I've made several tarps and always went crossways, resulting in more seams, more measuring, more cutting. You folks inspire me! On google maps, your place is shown as being permanently closed now. Thank you! well done 1) Would be helpful for you to explain how you decide the order for sewing the pieces together. 2) Can you share the name of the backing material you use for French seams? 3) Thread size and type would also be helpful to know. Nylon vs Polyester or PTFE Tenara Thanks again

    • @j9theupholsterer
      @j9theupholsterer Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you, I will do my best to respond to these! 1) The order is often based on the original order. Making notes on the pattern during disassembly helps keep track, you can usually see how they did it up close and copy it. Usually the seams will be simpler to sew in a certain order, I try to visualize a few sewn together to see if it makes sense. 2) I used scrap seat bottom lining for the French seam, not sure of the name. Any scrap vinyl, webbing, or thin fabric will do as long as it has some flexibility for corners and can withstand a boat environment (in this case). 3) I used 2500 denier Tenara ePTFE. It looked very close to the original thread used, and I already had some, but not necessary. 92 - 138 Sunguard + UVR bonded polyester anti-wick is also a great choice and what I generally use. And also much more cost effective. I avoid nylon based on it failing in the past for me. :)
