  • @LongswordRussia
    @LongswordRussia Před 2 měsíci

    Greetings and respect to you for the video! Your logic is quite correct if you make predictions no further than one stage. Longpoint is chosen not only by those fencers who are afraid of letting the enemy get too close, but also by those cunning bad asses who provoke the initial contact of the blades at the maximum distance. Are you familiar with such a disgusting thing as “applique”? This is when you try to separate your sword from someone else’s blade, but it still remains connected. Then, of course, there is a competition to see who has more experience in the end. And who could get more benefit from provoking Batman with the blade. But the fact is that a fencer who understands how leverage works will hand you his sword in a convenient position so that you want to find an easy way to dislodge someone else's sword with a blow to the blade. Once again, salutes for a good video!

    • @vote4wes
      @vote4wes Před 2 měsíci

      I've never heard of applique, at least not specifically called that, there's a few bits of bindwork that sound similar, but definitely not something we train to a high level yet 😁 Definitely another one for me to read up on!! Thanks so much for letting me know 👍

    Any updates on this one? Can you sit down with this jacket, as well? Are the plastic inserts reliable and/or able to be easily replaced? (Meaning they won't break easily and, if they do, it won't be hard to still be able to use the jacket) Also, is the forearm mesh padded?

    • @vote4wes
      @vote4wes Před 3 měsíci

      I can sit down in mine, SupFen are usually very good with their measurements. I don't currently know anyone who has had the plastic break, mine has taken many strong blows 👍👍 and I don't think there is an easy way to remove the inserts. The inserts are the same material a lot of the other HEMA plastic armour is made from. The forearms aren't padded much, but you do get hard plastic armour for the shoulders, down to your wrists which are pretty much indestructible. Happy to do a more in depth review 👍

    Personally, I'm really glad that you made this video. Resources regarding the use of shields larger than bucklers combined with more complex rechniques and guards are extremely rare, ans I was thinking of using the third ward demonstrated here and in other people's videos as reference. However, I wonder if some of the awkwardness of the third ward could be alleviated by moving your sword hand further behind you on your left shoulder, such that the quillons are behind your neck as opposed to the blade being upon your shoulder (or at least the blade would be higher up upon the shoulder than what you've demonstrated)? I'd imagine that would make at least a diagonal cut from the upper left to lower right less awkward. Then again, that in itself might be awkward, what with thick clothing and armor and all that. The video "Sword & Buckler Wards from the Walpurgis Fechtbuch (MS I.33) HEMA" by Michigan Medieval showed the third ward as I tried to explain.

    • @vote4wes
      @vote4wes Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks mate!! Glad you found it useful. Looking back at this now with your question about the third in mind, I probably wouldn't go that far back myself, you kind of always want your sword in front of you, purely to save those milliseconds in getting to the block/parry or attack. And yes with modern sparring equipment there's all sorts of material or velcro bits you can get your quillons snagged on. But, I'm also a firm believer in "anything can work if you can make it work" so is worth trying out 👍👍 All of the custodia coming from the right-side/shield-side can be clumsier, simply because now I have to clear my own shield 🛡️. I ve even been sparring more with heater shields which are smaller profile and the same is true, first custodia especially is an easy one to get tangled in lol Usually the best thing to do is move the shield out of the way. Although practice makes perfect on this one, as those things only get heavier and heavier throughout the bout 😅

  • @budgingcampthedingus1458

    • @vote4wes
      @vote4wes Před 8 měsíci

      He was just striking out against me coming forward, I think ultimately I caught him off-guard and closed distance before he could really react effectively. Punching the buckler into his hands prevents him using the sword on me for that split second at least :D

    You know, you should give yourself more credit. You did great! The problem with the type of self directed study of a sabre you've been doing is that if you're opponent hasn't read the same thing, it stymies your ability to read the fight and fight appropriately. You suffer from what a lot of fighters suffer from, and that's an inability to just accept what someone else does: you expect/hope your opponent to act in certain ways and prepare with that in mind. And then... Someone comes along and spoils your fun. However, in your defense, I don't really use a sidesword the way they're meant to be because I'm a bit of a thug. An effective thug though, as you saw. 😉
