Student Game Reviews #6 - 1D vs. 1D |
In today's video I review a game my student played online against a random player. The focal points for this review are how to handle playing against the sanrensei, as well as when you get such a huge lead, how to take that into a clean victory and not allow your opponent to have any breathing room.
I am looking for students, so if you are interested in taking lessons with me, please contact me using my email listed below.

Today I review my fourth and final round game from the 3rd Cleveland Go Club Rating Tournament that was held on June 2nd. My final round opponent was Michael Stevenson 2 dan, who was the other 3-0 record player going into the fourth round. Michael and I play at almost every local event, which means we have gone back and forth for a long time. Our most recent game ended in a humiliating display ...

Today I review my third round game from the 3rd Cleveland Go Club Rating Tournament that was held on June 2nd. My third round opponent was David Fang 3 dan. We played a year ago at the 1st CGCRT, where I also had to give him 4 stones, but that was when he was only 1 dan- this time he was a 3 dan! I knew this would be a challenging game, but I was up for it, plus after my 1st round disaster, I f...

Today I review my second round game from the 3rd Cleveland Go Club Rating Tournament that was held on June 2nd. My opponent, Manny Jauregui 1 dan, is someone I have known for a longtime and someone who I have seen grow stronger and stronger ever since he was a double digit kyu player. It is awesome seeing him improve, and finally reach that coveted 1 dan rank. But now that he is that strong, I ...

Today I begin reviewing my games from 3rd Cleveland Go Club Rating Tournament that was held on June 2nd. My first round opponent was Garett Germany, who is a very strong 2 kyu, who I played in the 1st round of the last tournament as well. Last tournament I gave him 5 stones and won, but this time around I had to give him 6 stones. This was one of the toughest games I've played in a while, so le...

In today's video, I play a very exciting game against a very strong 6 dan! I am very pleased with this game not only because I felt I played very well, but also I felt my opponent also played very well too, so it wasn't just "oh my opponent made a big mistake, I win", instead it was a full game of important decisions and trying to gain the smallest of upper hands in every local fight. Great video, I play San ren sei as black (15kyu) and really enjoy it, but I appreciate seeing the weaknesses of it!
2:38 so true xD
Haha calm down it’ll be okay!
@@TheOhioGoSchool I'm not like that any more, but I definitely was. Now I trade things left and right
32:30 is so real
Glad I’m not the only one 😂
Really enjoying the strategy and the psychological aspect behind the movements. Thanks for sharing the review 🙂
Thankyou for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it :)
Missing F15 is painful. Thanks for pointing that out
You're welcome, thankyou for watching!
i think all go games should be a 1 stone handicap
That is an interesting thought. Why do you think that?
@@TheOhioGoSchool i know go isn’t chess but, there are not any 2 games with as many players as many books as many tournaments you should play in a chess tournament just to see how they do it in a chess tournament, they line the players up by rating and the top half plays the bottom half so, if there’s 20 players #1 would play #11 #2 would play #12 etc so, the top rated player plays the 11th rated player no handicap when you spot someone 6 stones you are cheating him out of a learning opportunity they don’t learn the opening a 1 stone handicap is a much better way to learn i don’t want to learn how to play a 6 stone handicap i want to learn how to play an even game go players are obsessed with the idea of fairness they want to give the weaker player a chance but, in the long run, it cheats them
let’s put it this way if you had a chance to play a pro 1 on 1 which would you prefer? a 6 stone handicap, where you have a chance to win or an even game, where you have a chance to learn?
@@johnvoelker4345 Well in that case obviously lesser handicap is better, but this is a tournament
@@TheOhioGoSchool all the more reason to not have a handicap
Fun game and very inciteful commentary!
Thankyou for watching!
Very instructive! Thanks for the review

Is there any merit of anwsering w D5 attatchment with E4? Seems like black left side group still should survive, and white gets nothing in the center, wich can get big quickly.
Yup that in this case could be possible too!

This video was really easy to follow! I think I'll be able to take some lessons from this.
Thankyou for the comment! And glad you think so.
Thanks for sharing even your tough games, Soren. Very commendable and certainly not common!
Thankyou for watching!
crazy fighting!
Thanks for explaining the rationale behind blacks extra turn in the bottom right corner I’ve never understood why sacrificing 3 stones there is better
You're welcome! Glad you learned something from the video.
First! This is very helpful, ehe. Now I can beat Ayato, and hopefully get some sweet apples.
Thankyou for the comment! Good luck with playing Ayato and your apples…??
a very decisive match!
Yes! I was happy with how I played.
H3 is such a cool move!
Haha thankyou, glad someone thinks so 😂
quite the battle!

Interesting game and good review! I'm always sad I can't watch stuff during the event so I'm glad to get to see this after the fact!
Thankyou for putting the event together!
watching makes me excited to try and apply some of these concepts in my own games :)

shape is so important!!
I agree!!
some crazy fighting!
Thanks for the review
You’re welcome, thanks for watching and thankyou for the fun game!
I found that somewhat tricky shape weakness, yay!
Glad you found it! Good job!
I have been learning how you play handicap games and have used your strats on my club members
I’m glad to hear that! How has that been going?
@@TheOhioGoSchool It's been going pretty well. Lots of SDK players have been coming and I guess how many stones to give, which is sometimes a fun challenge.
@@ardargoz Sounds really fun!
That was wild
Good game to review though! Thanks for watching.
not my finest hour 😭😭
Makes for a better game to review!
oh hey :D
Hi :)
By just looking at the board end state, I would think white is winning if they had komi; however, doing a very loose count, I think black has it either way
Then you’re counting is pretty accurate!
what an annoying move! 🤣🤣
Got to watch out and be prepared for anything!
Yesss @ 41:20. That'd be great. Another pro told me Korea only has serious go events, it'd be cool if they all just came here for all the fun stuff
Thankyou for the comment. I hope you’re right about that!
Good game, Soren! Thanks for sharing Kim Jiseok's advice with us too!
Thankyou for the comment! And yes I figured it would be beneficial for others to hear it too.
thank you for the video!
Thankyou for the comment, and thankyou for watching!
tough game
Yes, but a lot to learn from it.
exciting game!
Exciting AND stressful! Thanks for watching!
thanks for the reviews.
Thankyou for watching!
intuition is to o1 jump directly before even q2 hane to reduce damage to the corner, but it doesn't seem to work. the q2 then o2 o1 sequence is beautiful.
Beautiful tesuji
gotta keep an eye out for those first line descents! they've gotten me in a few games :x
They’re tricky, but the best preparation is to be aware of them!
The audio seems to have a bit of a problem at the start. Not sure how you can prevent that, but it's something to look into.
Thanks for letting me know. Not sure what caused that, maybe a loose cable or something. I’ll troubleshoot a little more next time.
Thanks for the video! It's a small thing, but I love how you use the fuzzy stone feature in Sabaki, very wabi-sabi! Also, I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding resigning in handicap games. At my club people are divided, I feel like if it's a handicap game it is an opportunity for the lower rated player to learn by seeing the higher rated players responses to their moves and so should never resign even if they know they're not going to win. I can see how other people could find that rude though, as if you're playing in bad faith, knowing that you're not going to win, and "wasting both players time." I don't see it as a waste, but as someone who has played a fair number of handicap games recently I'm curious what your thoughts on this topic are? Thanks!
Thanks for the comments! So it depends on the player. When I ask to play a weaker player who needs handicap stones, I understand that they may not have the same counting skills as I, so I should not expect them to resign. Plus, there are a lot of endgame sequences, tesujis, and tactics that can only be learned in endgame, so even if a game is lopsided, there is still a lot to learn- so me personally, I don’t mind if a weaker player plays to the end. Along with what I’ve stated, it’s just a fun club game after all too!
Thanks for the lesson! Very insightful :)
Thanks for the comment! Thanks for watching too!
Great analysis! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the comment! And thanks for watching!
