A Meadow Walk Up The Coyote Wall - No Talk, No Music, Just Nature. - 4K Virtual Hike
A virtual solo meadow walk / hike up Coyote Wall with no talk, no music, no shots of my face in the camera... just pure nature, in 4K video.
A mere hour's drive from Portland, on the banks of the Columbia River Gorge's Washington side, rises a dramatic rock escarpment called the Syncline, the Bingen Anticline, but most popularly "Coyote Wall". A slice of Arizona or Utah in the PNW and looking like a canyon lost one of its sides, the Wall's trails attract walkers & mountain bikers like a magnet on sunny weekends.
Laced with steep paths that venture up, around, and into seemingly every nook & cranny of the lava-borne landscape (technically 'columnar basalt'), the area is especially appealing for the tundra-like meadows that morph into a green & surprisingly lush wonderland every spring, with creeks and even waterfalls hidden among its rolling hills. This hike explores all those features and more by approaching the wall from a decommissioned road, then veering on a path that climbs clockwise to the rim before venturing down its gentler eastern slopes, skirting an area dubbed "The Labyrinth". Enjoy!
For those still reading this far: thank you, first of all, as always for watching. I was unsure about working on this video for a long time (it was actually recorded a year ago) due to technical issues that frustratingly butchered the second half. In the end I decided it would be a shame to throw it all out, so I salvaged what I could... please excuse the shorter run-time and plethora of edits towads the end. Now that spring has sprung & the weather is better, I'd like to capture some more quintessentially PNW trails this year - think forests and coasts. Stay tuned!

what is your camera gear?
It's just a GoPro (I have the 10), but I'd love to invest in a more professional setup someday.
Thank you for taking me on a tour through such a beautiful landscape. It truly made me feel relaxed and amazed. Wishing you all the success, my friend. May your day be filled with blessings. I will follow your channel and look forward to your next video.❤
The United States Of America is so unique and beautiful !!! What a beautiful country
Beautiful… and windyyyyyyy
Is it you on the thumbnail?
It is not.
Thank you for another beautiful and very scenic walk ! ❤
Lovely , scenic walk, thanks for bringing us there ! ❤
Awesome trail !!!!
Why do you think you are above the Trail rules when you get off the path?
Hello there, I'm not aware of any strict trail restrictions here - except on parts of the Loowit Trail, where you can't venture off-trail up Mt St Helens itself. There are "explore with caution" signs at the start of the trail (which I strive for, to the best of my ability), and an explicitly chained-off area near the first bridge (which I do heed). The awful crumbly trail sections towards the end of the video are surprisingly part of the official trail, & it's been like that for years; I've heard it's currently closed for rehabilitation. But if there's an official off-trail restriction in place for the entirety of Lava Canyon, that'd be valuable to know for future reference - I'd love to reach out to the park for confirmation. Either way, thanks for the comment.
Why is the picture so blurry? DO I have to have a special monitor because it is in 4k?
Hi there, you do not need a special monitor! It'll still play at a lower setting even without 4K-capable hardware. CZcams tends to default video playback at the lowest quality it can get away with, but there's a way to force it to play at the quality you want: near the bottom of every video, on the bottom right should be a symbol shaped like a gear. Tap on this to show the "Settings" and there should be an option for "Quality". The highest possible is 2160p60 (aka 4K), but you can try something lower & see if that helps (I hope it does)! Otherwise, the cause could be a dozen other things - internet connection, hardware, CZcams throwing a fit... hard to say without being there. A geeky acquaintance may be able to assist :)
Definitely not a trail for kids.
I fell in love with the beauty of nature. I think the power of nature is really special. I have a comfortable time. I will not forget the relationship and likes 발음듣기 복사하기번역 저장번역 저장
Just found your channel. Thanks for sharing your hike!
I can see how you got turned around, I was thinking my kingdom for a horse 🐎 😮
Leaf-tastic video bro keep it up
Gracias por tan hermoso recorrido brother, saludos desde Honduras, me suscribo y te deseo lo mejor.
How many hours you walk
This hike is about 2 hours if you hike the same route I did, depending on how often you stop
How common are rockfalls there? It seemed like a lot down on the road at the base
Good question - I've hiked here quite a bit and have never seen rockfall in action... but every time it seems there's evidence of new rockfall(!) I'd love to hear from any locals who have insight into this.
Uh, looks like Little Moab to me. My favorite spot for ticks & poison oak, ha!
Outstanding, absolutely gorgeous work my friend!
Thanks so much!
Het was een fantastische rit!❤
Beautiful landscape with wonderful energy. Thank you for showing this!
Thank you from Australia. Loved this trail on my treadmill walk.
It was nice walking on my treadmill in the wet tropics of Australia to enjoy your hike. Thank you.
May I ask what camera you are using? I am disabled, but my niece is going on a vacation to northern New York, and I thought I would buy a GoPro for her to record a walk in Palmyra that is important to us. I'm thinking of a GoPro 12. Do you put your camera on your hat? Or do you carry it on a stick?
Certainly! I use a GoPro 10 but from everything I've read I'd highly recommend going with the 12. Longer battery life, wider field of view - there's no reason not to if price is no object. The 10s & 11s would definitely be a little cheaper now. A stick is ideal if a) the walk is not too long (since they'll have to hold it the whole time) and b) they don't care about capturing the 'natural' ambient sounds... the gimbal-type sticks actually make a surprising amount of noise, which a GoPro will capture. If either of those are a factor, then yes I'd use a hands-free hat attachment or somewhere else etc., which is what I use. Good luck!
Love this! While I originally was hoping for non-stop walking (for "immersion'' as I walk on a treadmill haha) I really do appreciate that you stopped to take a look at some of the beautiful nature highlights throughout the video. I would've wanted to stop by and look at the flowers, the river, etc just like you did here. Thank you so much for sharing and looking forward to more!!
I really like these videos and also want to be able to make videos like this. Can you tell me what equipment you use for filming?
Hey thanks! I use a GoPro 10, but honestly it's probably overkill & I found out it has issues recording in low light & the mic is over-sensitive. Almost any modern smartphone might work just as well - video stabilization is surprisingly decent, etc... as long as you don't mind not being able to use the phone for other things + battery drain.
@@ExciteHike Awesome, thank you for sharing. I'll look forward to your new videos.
Thank you for sharing a beautiful trail. I like to watch a full hike while I walk and I prefer real sounds as well. The video of the waterfalls at the end almost felt like I was there so I appreciated the real nature sounds. But if you decide to use canned or music, I'll just mute the audio. I enjoyed all the extra care that you put into this video. I will watch a few more of your videos now that I have found your channel.
Beautiful hike, thank you for taking us. 🙂
Really pretty
Thank you for the virtual walk through this beautiful place! The quality is quite good, but there is not enough stabilization here.
Thank you for watching! (and noted!)
Lovely hike! I've done this several times over many years - last in May 2021 when the wildflowers were incredible. You are braver than I going out a bit to film beyond the "balcony". The trail journey is the highlight for sure. Absolutely love the Pool of the Winds and the views. You are right about the summit - but the saddle is cool - last year was the first time we went back that way. Very nice filming - amazing how smooth it is over the rough trail (could sure use some trail work on those switchbacks). Have you done Wahkeena Trail? Another of my favorites. I would love a few seconds longer on flowers when possible - or maybe just do a special one in the Spring and feature the flowers?
I love this trail too (that ledge on the Balcony is indeed scary!), and I bet those wildflowers were amazing. I don't think I've ever managed to hit this trail at their peak... there were some lovely patches, as glimpsed, but this was practically on the cusp of June. I love the idea of spotlighting the flowers more - I'll make sure to add that to my schedule this spring. And yes the Wahkeena Trail is probably my favorite gorge trail on the OR side; it is absolutely on my to-film list! Thank you so much for the comments!
Absolutely loved this. Thank you so much for the indexing. Went back to re-watch some sections. Hiked up as far as High Bridge years ago (before the fire) and wanted to see Tunnel Falls (Did not know about Twister - gorgeous). Also wanted to see how much damage was done by the fire. Only suggestion would be to raise the camera a little. When I am hiking I have to watch the path closely in front of me for my feet but when you are doing the footwork I would rather see more scenery ahead. There were of course cases on this walk where the scenery was below the trail. I appreciated the stops to show something in more detail, like the flowers. Kind of missed seeing the East waterfall - thought you would turn back to look at it after you crossed the dicey creek. Will look for more of these!
Thanks for the kind words! And absolutely recommend going all the way to Twister if you ever get the chance. This was actually one of the first videos I ever shot, & there's so many 'ugh, I wish I had done this or that part differently' moments (well... with my newer vids too, but * definitely * here). Over time I'd like to think (or hope) I improved things like camera positioning, not skipping over interesting scenery, letting the camera linger over certain shots, etc. - especially on my latest ones, but I always always always want to improve more. Very much appreciate the feedback!
I've never been to Slovenia. But strangely, my little green parrot loves this video. After work and on weekends she and I have started watching walking videos. This is her very favorite! I don't know how she distinguishes between the videos. They all have beautiful trees, mountains, and waterfalls. But when I put this one on, Queen Cleo-Parrotra wakes up and begins dancing-- even though you are just walking through the town. When the waterfalls are shown, she jumps in her water dish and takes a bath. When the bells in the church ring, she sings. It's a little bird's delight! Thanks so much for your tireless walking! Do you ever get to sit down?🦜
I love this so much, thank you (and Queen Cleo-Parrotra!) for watching. I usually take a few breaks when I can but for this hike surprisingly I didn't, except at the church. I think the scenery kept drawing me on... I always wanted to see what was around the next corner!

I love your videos, but just a note - your camera seemed to be pointed a bit downward in this one. I'm seeing more of the ground and less of the scenery :) Just a tip!
Hi there! I totally agree; I believe I've found a way to center the camera more reliably now - seems to be working better with my latest few videos (at least so far, knock on wood). I always appreciate good-faith honest feedback, many thanks!
I prefer the full hike and definitely the real sounds of life, thanks for your honesty and work happy holidays Dave UK
I appreciate your genuine honesty in the details section. Beautifully captured shots of nature. I'll gladly subscribe to see more, best from NYC
Wow
You are a very brave guy, hiking through remote uncharted (by you) territory. I loved the beauty of that place, and I appreciated your comparison of it to the US. When I was a child, I lived in the woods in western WA and my parents would take me and my sister for walks on trails similar to those you were hiking. There was a small creek and abandoned very old buildings. This brought back memories and it kept me spellbound. The waterfall hike was beautiful. I was a little anxious when you were walking close to the edge of the precipices. I was thinking the trail could give way. The hike through the last woods was a little monotonous, but not boring. I stuck with you because I wanted to see the next meadow. I imagined I was you. There's just something about a trail in the woods that tweaks my curiosity and compels me to keep going. Thank you for this very refreshing experience.
the no music part is really appreciated. well done.
I finished the full hike today, start to finish with a few breaks in between. Happy I came across your channel! I really appreciate that you uploaded the full loop. It gives a sense of satisfaction to complete a hike in such stunning surroundings, even if it's only on a treadmill. Fantastic scenery! If paradise is half as nice as Slovenia, I think I will buy a ticket. Thanks for the upload! Also you did a great job on the subtitles, which makes the hike even more interesting.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Slovenia really is paradise, can't recommend it enough.
Wonderful walk in a beautiful place. Great job.
Beautiful spot, so nice with the falls and the wildflowers!
Found your channel this morning. Good stuff. Keep it up. I think you should do Humbug next. Natural Bridges would be a good one, too.
Would love to, been looking into getting out to the coast!
Wow! How did CZcams not put you in my feed before now? I use walking and hiking videos to get my 10,000 steps in everyday and I totally love this. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this!!! My dad and I hiked this years back. Hard to travel there now, so glad I can see this trail again!!❤
*waves at the sheep* 😅 no judgement, interacting with nature is healthy
Your videos are honestly the best virtual hikes I've come across! Usually I put on nature videos as background for my AM journaling, but yours has successfully distracted me. Your witty and interesting commentary is quite entertaining! Feeling like I'm experiencing your hike creates motivation and excitement to discover new hiking spots. Thank you for making these!
