Peter's veggie garden in Bulgaria
#gardening #wilderness #bushcraft #Bushcraftshop.nl
Miriam Lancewood lived with her husband Peter for seven years in the wilderness of New Zealand. They left civilisation in 2010 and walked into the mountains with not much more than a backpack. They lived without technology, not even a clock. They roamed around like nomads, slept in a tent, cooked on a fire and Miriam learned to hunt with bow and arrow. Like our ancestors, they lived from hunting and gathering. Their observations and experiences are unique in this technological world.
Since Miriam met Peter in 2006, they have been nomadic and lived and traveled in many different countries. At present they are living in an off-grid shepherds cottage in the Rodopi mountains in Bulgaria.
Miriam's memoir 'Woman in the Wilderness', became an international Bestseller, translated into 5 languages. Dutch, German, French, Portuguese, and Chinese.
In 2020 the sequel 'Wild at heart' came out and won an important prize in New Zealand.
And in 2023 she co-edited a new publication called 'Wilder Journeys'.

both.. we have mirror cells in the brain, which mirror the brain activity in others and our body perception/ sensation are highly influenced by our senses.. which are the input from outside. Our body mirrors the outside and connect with reality... not like the mind.. who is solitary. This reflects my experience. If you are in the presence without thoughts, you are connected with reality with your body. You can feel everything in detail.

This is very true. Except I don’t feel quite the same way. Sometimes when it is sunny for too many days in a row I feel more stressed, oppressed. And then it rains, and suddenly everything changes. This could be also that there are other factors at work. And I think seeing the sky must have an effect too. When I see the brightness of the sky more, my vision improves quite noticeably, as if my eyes-and everything else-were not fully awake until that point. And I feel more free and much more able to think clearly.

This makes me think of something that happened recently. I was sleeping outside (not far from the house though) and suddenly the rain started pouring. I had a cloth functioning as a tent to keep the abundant mosquitoes out but it was absolutely not waterproof. And because of the rain I couldn’t get back into the house without going under the eaves, which were of course like having a bucket of water dumped on one’s head. And so I sat down against a tree with my blanket and was just there in all the dampness and storm, and felt a strange joy. A similar thing happened a few years ago while camping, but this time it was more windy and still a bit rainy. But the tarp over me blew off, and there at the edge of sleep I could see out-beyond the trees and the mountains, so far below, the lights of the town; and there were the rushing winds and the rain and the maples and birches howling in the night. Then my friend helped me get the tarp back in order. It is a time I will never forget. These times of feeling truly alive have also come when I am in the city, which for me is quite uncomfortable (my idea of comfort being stuffing myself in a plum grove…) I remember also in the interview with Kenton at Rewild University you mentioned how you appreciate the chaos of the city and that of the wilderness, but would not like the in-between rotting comfort of suburbia (not an exact quote…) I think it is only in the light of such experiences (and others) that one could think of giving up one’s comforts. But we do have physical limits to how we can live without our ability to live purposefully, declining. I think finding these limits for ourselves, and living with wisdom and purpose within them as we’ve seen them, seems like the most liberating and happy way to live.

I also have a garden together with my husband, working there brings us together. I have seing if my husband has a bad day and goes to the garden, all his negative energy dissapears. It is a blessing to work a garden and see everyday how they grow until they are ready. It is really a wonder to see how nature is generous. Good for you Peter to work in your garden, it provides you enjoyment and health.

Landlords only look at profits, farmers do their best to maximize their profits, buyers look for low prices. No one look at environment which (we live in) and we came from... That's a losing setup for everyone. Great editing Miriam, Peter is such a calm "individual", I love the music at the end, it gives wings to my soul.

Very inspiring! Peter is such a wise man with so much knowledge. The problem here in the Netherlands is the supermarkets and the temptation to buy processed food because that's available everywhere and cheap. I know what is healthy but not buying processed food, like cookies with a lot of sugar is my greatest challenge because I am a sugar addict 😬 and you must be very disciplined to only buy healthy food here. Many people in the west are I think addicted, sugar and processed food are the biggest problem. Living in a remote area forces you to eat healthy because there is no supermarket around the corner. But when you and Peter go to a supermarket, isn't that challenging for you, not to buy bad food?
