Emily Ball at Seawhite is a contemporary art school based in the south of England. Established in 2006, we deliver exciting art courses that encourage alternative methods to drawing and painting.
Through our CZcams channel we hope to give an insight into our approach to teaching, painting and drawing, and provide a glimpse into the experience of joining us for a course.
Our art school is independent and international, attracting students from all over the world to join us in person at the Seawhite Studio or virtually for one of our online art courses. Our team of inspiring tutors are all award-wining artists in their own right and generously share their knowledge and passion for painting and drawing. Through our comprehensive programme of courses, we aim to demystify the process of making paintings and provide the creative motivation you need to progress as an artist.

Exhibition Film: "La Joie de Vivre of Painting", John Skinner
“La Joie de Vivre of Painting” is a retrospective exhibition of paintings and drawings by John Skinner, curated by Emily Ball. The impetus to curate the show was to mark John’s 70th birthday. The show contains 30 pieces of specially selected works that span three decades of an extraordinary and prolific career.
As well as the show, Emily also commissioned Noah Carter to create this film of the exhibition as a permanent record of the show. In it, Emily talks about why she chose specific works to be exhibited, and describes in detail what she admires about John’s work and his philosophy of painting.

Wonderful - joie de vivre, indeed. I was so sad not to be able to attend but this film brings back such memories and re-inspires too. I'm lucky enough to have two of John's paintings in my study - they bring me joy every day.

What is that?
Hi! This is an abstract painting exercise where you make marks and choose colors based on the taste and experience of eating a fig. She is referencing colors and marks from plants and flowers in her work. It's not an actual "thing" but eludes to flowers and nature due to the colors and shapes used. In the end, it's a play of colors and marks to make a pleasing composition for an abstract painting that gives you a feeling, vibe, or mood and isn't necessarily meant to depict any one thing. I hope this helps!
