Low Profile (Specialty) Sockets vs Cutting Sockets or Modifying Them
Take a look at some modified sockets on the table for review!
What are the reasons why you would modify sockets? And what are some pros/cons to doing so?
Of course in a working environment, modifying tools can cause a safety concern and may not be permissible in some auto shops.
When you are on your own perhaps you need a special tool and maybe your a bit short on cash considering you already spent so much on parts!

    I’ve had old school Craftsman ever since I have worked on vehicles, and they’ve been fine. I inherited a couple of Mac ratchets that skipped (probably why my brother in law let me have them). I called Mac, expecting to pay for a rebuild kit since I wasn’t the original owner, and they sent them to me for free.

    New craftsman are crap. Made in China, not Taiwan; Taiwanese made tools are very comparable to old USA made craftsman. I personally think the steel, in modern times, is the inferior product. Old US steel is purchased by the Chinese and other countries, at a massive premium (from demolished/dismantled old building/bridges). Even newer USA made tools are not as good as old Snap-on, Mat-co, Craftsman, etc. I feel old craftsman can compare to newer elite USA made tools. Now I look for Taiwan made tools if I need new tool, for my tool box.

    You would get a #44807 (1/4" drive) a #44808 (3/8" drive) and a #44809 (1/2" drive), all made in China. The clerk isn't correct unless he's got very old stock of kits, or will use some of the new and old parts to fix yours. I had to do that yesterday---I bought a #44984 1/2" drive USA made flex on Ebay, and I had to use a modern kit for a #44985 ratchet and reuse the selector lever as the one that comes in the kit interferes with the flex action of the ratchet when it's in certain positions. Otherwise, the rest of the parts work. As others noted, keep your 'old gold" USA made units. When they "fail", most times they just need a cleaning and re-lube to be good for another 40+ years.

    I keep a good amount of hyper tough tools like a wrench sets and ratchets along with sockets in the truck or a few in my travel kits. There my loner tools. If someone needs a tool I wouldint think twice about handing them that for the simple fact if they keep it and don’t give it back. I’m not going to lose much. And the wrenches i use and bend them cut em up for the hard to reach spots. There cheap. You don’t won’t to get a 700 800 dollar snap on socket set or wrench set to cut up on or to give someone when they need a tool because the are expensive. So hart Stanley and hyper tough. Good for back up and travel tools. Honestly Stanley makes good ratchets but if it came down to it. A good cheap tool would be the kobalt Stanley and hart. The only thing I would recommend from hyper tough is the ratchet wrench’s and wrench’s. Craftsman is a good brand right there with the kobalt. But honestly. You test them it all depends on how much your going to use them and what your going to use them for. I wouldint recommend hyper ratchets for a everyday mechanic. But it would be good for a starter tools and for the diy guys and girls out there. But honestly ovoid most hyper tough. There bits are awful. But hart bits I have noticed are the same if now better then most dewalt bits and even Mikita bits. I have only broke 1 hart bit and I was really tortured that bit before it broke. If your going to go cheap go for Stanley hart kobalt and craftsman. Never been a fan of husky. But honestly the tekton ratchets are probably the best. They are half the price of snap on and are just as good. If not better. Tekton is my recommendation for the professional and diy people

    Looks? I want tools that function and last and are easy to use with a lifetime warranty at a reasonable price. Who cares about looks? Also, whats the torque rating before the pawl breaks? Because nobody EVER misuses or puts extra leverage on a ratchet. I find the flatter handles to be better in tight places, they don't rotate in your hand.

    Unless you are going to be using a ratchet every week or you're a professional technician that is using tools everyday to earn a living, a Snap-on ratchet may not make a lot of sense, but if you are the type to use your tools every week absolutely Snap-on is the way to go, however if you just can't justify the expense of Snap-on tools maybe Williams is a better option for you, and you can still make due with your cheaper set of sockets, really unless you're using these tools everyday as a professional technician, or you just have extra money you don't care to invest in your tool collection a box full of Snap-on is hard to justify, but remember if you buy a professional tool you will get professional quality in return, personally I have a bunch of cheaper stuff in terms of pliers, sockets, screwdrivers, etc but I also have some professional tools and ratchets are the one place I don't care to spend the extra money for a Snap-on because I know I will break a cheap China made ratchet and my knuckles have been bloody to many times as a result of cheap ratchets, so it just made sense to spend the extra money for a good ratchet and use decent sockets from a reputable company, if a company is to ashamed to stamp their name onto the sockets chances are it's not something you should trust.

    bullshit there is no best ratchet or best brand, best tool is depending what you want do and depended from requiment! for only one bolt loose or thigt it's never required have heavy snap-on, for aircraft engine dissamble you can forgot simple tools too. do the tool your job? less cost+less weight+enough quality+ work well then it's done. to take a heavy snap-on to loose fifty M5 bolts you only move heavy weight nothing else. you never use 1/2" or 3/4" or 1" size ratchets for a M5 Bolt too? the perfect tool is whos do your job in best possible and that nothing to do with brands!

    I've actually compiled a ratchet to kit repair list for the USA made ratchets. I keep it in Excel and I bring it to the stores with me. I ask for kits when I'm there. Sometimes I get them, sometimes not. I've got a pretty good stock of them for what I need. The thing is this: most of the time they need a good cleaning and oiling and you're good for another 20 years. I have several Craftsman ratchets in sets and individually and they all work just fine.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 10 měsíci

      @@jfkdkslslee The kit instructions say SAE30, but you can use a little bit of Super Lube from Harbor Freight. You don't want to go heavy on it, as it will cause it to skip and the grease hardens over time. A little oil every now and then goes a long way.
