    OMG! ⅛ power and 1/32 power; he doesn’t know it’s two stops less?! “I’m not a mathematician!” Well, your are not much of a professional photographer either. The teaching moment here is the ratio in terms of stops of light. Everyone’s flash lightening will be a different powers to his. The camera works in steps of light relating to stops of light, so it makes sense to also talk of the lighting in terms of stops of light. That’s why professionals and professional educators use it.

    • @saminterrante
      @saminterrante Před 4 měsíci

      It's a mere bit of sarcasm, Julian. The finer point is that lighting ratios are something I quickly learned not to go by, and to trust the acuity of my eye to achieve the look I'm going for. In this case, recognizing a shadow depth that I feel is flattering for the subject's face. I suppose I could have explained that a little better haha. I must not be much of an educator either. ;)

    why isn't the ISO at 100 or 125? Also the shutter speed seems high. And the F-stop? Do you ever shoot above F4?

    • @saminterrante
      @saminterrante Před 5 měsíci

      All good questions! The higher ISO is so that I can rapid fire with my camera and my lights not misfire on every other shot. If my ISO is lower, the power of my 200 watt lights have to be higher which causes the recycle time of the lights to suffer. In theory you always want the lowest ISO possible for maximum detail and minimal image noise, but with cameras these days, I can see zero difference in detail between ISO 100 and ISO 400 (or even higher), so I'm not worried about it. As for shutter speed, I could shoot a little slower, but I see no point. 1/200 is kind of a sweet spot to freeze any motion that might happen during a headshot session. It's also part of the effort to minimize ambient light, and slowing my shutter is gonna let more natural light creep in. Regarding f-stop, I like shooting at f/4 on my 85mm lens for headshots because it gives you just a tiny bit of blur around the ears and hair which I think looks nice. If I want my headshot to look a little bit more painterly and artistc, I could open up my aperture more. If I'm trying to get the entire subject in tack sharp focus, I'll close down my aperture. Hope this all helps!

Your work is so impressive, and I’m totally jealous of your friendship with Peter Hurley - that’s rad. I have a ton of questions I’d like to ask, but the one I’m most curious about is why do you opt for strobes as opposed to constants (like Peter’s kit)? I’m about to redo my kit and I can’t decide if I want to upgrade my strobes or move to something like an Amaran constant light setup. Thoughts? And also, why haven’t you made the move to mirrorless?

    2ND COMMENT: You are the real deal with your Masking info! And I see you're a Nikon 750 photographer, welcome to the club! Quick Question: do you shoot in RAW mode all the time, or do you also shoot in JPEG?

    • @saminterrante
      @saminterrante Před 11 měsíci

      Thanks again dude! Yeah I had my D750 for many years, but just traded one of them in for the Nikon Z6ii - I had to adjust from the feeling of using a DSLR to the feeling of the mirrorless camera, but I have to say the autofocus on my new mirrorless alone makes it worthwhile. I never have to worry again about getting the perfect portrait only to find my autofocus wasn't quite on. As for file format, I only shoot in RAW. I will however do RAW + JPEG(basic) if I'm tethering, because the smaller file transfers faster in the preview window. Hope that helps! Here if you need me. Take care!

    what did you do in post to brighten up the white background? ive played with doing stuff like this and it really screwed with everything else... when you say bare bulb, are you COMPLETELY bare bulb or in the case of the flashpoint/godox monolights, using the 'reflector'?

    • @saminterrante
      @saminterrante Před rokem

      Hey, thanks for your comment! I have a quick tutorial on my Instagram on how to get a pure white background - check out this link: instagram.com/reel/CYkH1n-lUBi/ Hope that helps! As far as the "fashion"shot with the bare bulb, I think I used the reflector dish, yeah. That will amplify the light, but the size of the light source in either case is very small, so you'll get pretty much the same hard light. Let me know if you have any other questions!
