Pilot Myu, Elite and Platinum New Disassembly Tool, for Pocket Pens
Here’s a great new tool you can use to disassemble your Pilot Mu, Elite and Platinum Pocket Pens. I worked with Dale Beebe at Pentooling.com to develop a tool so we can perform essential cleaning of our pens.

This is an old Scottish song that was written in the 1600’s, possibly by a man who was destined to be hanged the next day. The words “And since it fell unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not…” may refer to that possibility. It is also claimed by the Irish, and is often sung without accompaniment. The Mossman guitar is vintage, from the 1970s. Mossman were made in Kansas by Stuart Mo...

thank you , I have a few modern Japanese eyedropper pens and have some vintage on the way with one held up with ups .
Thanks Dayne. I have collected modern and fountain pens for several years and they are all regular writers for me. My preference is vintage. Your videos have stimulated me to take the plunge and try vintage Japanese eye droppers
Dayne, I was so pleased when you published this video. I was really happy at the news that a company was actually making this tool. The day the video was published, like many others, I went in search on the web site only to not find it. That's when I just decided to go ahead and sent an email to Dale. He said you were quick cause he had not put the tool on the website at that time. Well I now have one of the new tools in the mail coming my way. Thanks.
Very cool tool, I could use one of these!
Great vid thank you!!
Does this tool also work for pilot capless nib units m, the Silvern and other pilot models? Thank you.
Hi, no on Pilot capless, those pens come apart simply by unscrewing the section and barrel (body). Yes on all their vintage cartridge/converter pens. I’ve tried it on the E-95 and it fits but I wasn’t able to get the slotted retainer to unscrew.
@@daynenix2832thanks. The nib unit on the capless has a similar locking nut cum piercer. I was asking if this tool would fit that as well. But thanks anyway.
I’ve not succeeded in adjusting the clutch ring in the cap of my Pilot Elite - it still doesn’t post as it ought. Will this tool help with the problem? Would love to see a video showing how to push the clutch ring down, please.
Hi, no, I don’t think so - send me a pic and I’ll see if I can figure it out. Daynix@aol.com
@@daynenix2832 I will try to. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! I have a Pilot Elite that will not post as it should and you have just confirmed what I suspected was wrong! Will now try to fix the problem. Thanks again!
You are welcome!
You'd be surprised what you can find in your local hobby shops. Not the big box stores, but the smaller local buisnesses that are dedicated to model cars, planes and trains. You can find brass shims for flossing your nibs and I found the brass or aluminum tubes to make my own disassembly tool for vintage Pilots. Also found micro mesh pads to tune nibs or polish scratched pen bodies. The list goes on and on and the items are relatively inexpensive, if you are willing to put the work into it... Great video! Nice collection! I am jealous 😆...
I definitely agree! For instance, a small bottle of sac shellac costs $5 or $10 at pen shows, but you can buy a pint can at ACE for less, of course that will serve my needs for life!! Unfortunately, I don’t have a hobby store in my area and more and more are being put out of business by Amazon
Nice to see another of your very helpful videos. Thanks also for the links to all of your tools.
I have been really hoping for that tool being available, I am really glad to hear it is being made now. I am definitely going to get one! Is these pliers you are using at 12:05 to pull out the feed also from Dale Beebe? What is the name of it? Looks really handy too. Thank your for sharing your knowledge with us!
@@draganaj6752 They’re forceps. They only cost about $10 on Amazon. Here’s a group of four, which may be too many but I find them helpful - a.co/d/04qo7qTg
@@daynenix2832 Thank you, this is helpful - found an equivalent piece on German Amazon.
Hi. Do you have a link for this tool?
@@user-gl5ld9vm7i www.pentooling.com
@@daynenix2832 I didn't find it on their site. Perhaps it hasn't been added yet. I looked in the Tools section. I assumed it would be in Tools> Generic/Misc Tools > Files, Brushes, Odd Tools. Maybe they hid it elsewhere. Their SAC EXPANDER made it possible for me to change ink sacs with one hand. Nice tool.
@@erad67it will be on his site shortly. You can use his email link to order it.
I'm glad someone is making this tool now. I've used the dulled-off tweezers a few times, and it's scary every time. I've already messaged Dale at Pentooling to buy one for myself.
Have you tried to disassemble Sailor's of that same type of design? Was the disassembly same as this video?
Hi, yes. Basically the same but you need a different size tool.
@@daynenix2832Clear explanation of thr video btw, thanks again.
This is such a useful video! I have been buying these vintage Japanese pocketable pens recently because they write so beautifully and are so balanced and perfect in my hand. I spent days cleaning (soaking) pens I bought on eBay because I was so afraid to damage them by disassembling. As I know they’re delicate but have stood the test over time! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Very interesting. I’m curious if the new Elite comes apart the same way. I just got one that is dated January 2024.
I’ve tried and could not get it to come apart and didn’t want to destroy it. The tool fit the same way.
Thank you for the information. I just got my first vintage Japanese pen and wasn't quite sure what to do with it. It is an eyedropper with the plunger, much like the one in your video, but I can;t get the section to unscrew. What I took away from this is to try and soak it to see if it will loosen up. Then I can only hope it doesn't have leaking problems if I can ever get it open haha
Soaking or heat may help, I use a hair dryer. I’d use the heat first.
@daynenix2832 oh thank you for the suggestion! I will try my hairdryer first!
The hair dryer worked!! Got it all rinsed out and let it soak a little thank you for the help
Now this is a really informative video, thank you! Just yesterday I received a Pilot Elite from 1974, but as my loupe shows, the feed is quite off-center. Are you still selling the tool for disassembly you made and showed in this video? Is there a way I can still purchase it?
Hi, I’ve never sold the tool, but Dale Bebe is going to be selling a tool that works on both Pilot and Platinum pens. Contact him at pentooling.com
@@daynenix2832 Hi, oh then I misunderstood one of the previous comments. Thank you for this contact 😀
Thank you for the video! How far should the ebonite “stick” go into the plastic feed? Should it be flush with the back end(where you have the cartridge) or should it go in even further?
I’m sorry, I don’t understand your question.
@@daynenix2832 sorry, i Can see i was unclear. The thin black feed, how far should it be in the plastic collector? How much should it protrude in the front? Thank you 🙏
Thank you for your video. Any idea if Platinum platinum can be taken apart the same way?
Very interesting and informative video! I've never seen the insides of these pens before. I saw someone else inquiring about purchasing these tools from you, is that still an option?
I can‘t thank you enough for that demonstration. Very helpful!
THANK YOU!
Hi Dayne - today a pen arrived from Japan an I was looking for information on how to use it and came across this video. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the pen I had bought was the very same model as the one you were using to demonstrate the features and procedures. Wonderful. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!!
Hello! Another awesome and very instructive video! I have a question: Is it possible that there is no cork inside the barrel, but the ink flow is instead stopped by the rubbery component at the bottom of the blind cap (at the base of the shaft)? At least, that seems to be the case with the pen I have.
Thank you so much and greetings from Ukraine, I'm new to this hobby and your videos are so very helpful!
Thank you!
Excellent video. Very professional, detailed and informative. Tips on creating the removal tool are priceless. Thank you so much for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comment
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial.
Will a vintage Pilot elite cap fit a modern day Pilot e95s nib and barrel unit?
I don’t think so, the modern e95 is a much larger pen.
This was such a wonderful video, and I found myself very fascinated by the disassembly process, and only found this video moments ago! I myself ventured into collecting Japanese pocket pens starting with a Pilot E95s, the modern Elite. Later I acquired a vintage Elite, then a Platinum, and lastly a Sailor. It is so much easier to disassemble/reassemble when someone has already blazed that trail! And for that, I thank you for showing how easy it is.
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for your comment!
Great Video Wayne! How can I contact you? I would like to buy Pilot and Platinum tool you made.
Daynix@aol.com
Where could I buy a replacement sac for this pen? What size did you use? Thank you.
Beautiful rendition. You're a fantastic vocalist.
Thank you 😊
Thank you very much for a wonderful video. Tell me does the Pilot nib need a sealant or glue? I do my own vintage fountain pen repair but this pen line is different. My nib came off. ( I did drop it a couple of times.) Much appreciated.
No glue needed, the nib is friction fit
@@daynenix2832 Thank you very much. Wonderful channel. New subscriber. God bless you always.
@@steventrosiek2623 and His blessings to you as well!
I've taken high interest in collecting some vintage pocket fountain pens and the Pilot Elite is one of them. I don't have access to the tools to make the stainless rod as yours. Is there a way to buy that online?
I don’t know of anyone who sells them.
Excellent and helpful video. This helped show me how to fix a gap between the barrel and the gold ring on my Pilot Elite. Turns out someone had put the gold ring on backwards. Also I can take apart my Platinum Pocket Pen and clean the feed and pen better.
Great video. Do you know any replacement for felt near Elite's feader?
Unfortunately I don’t. If you find anything that works let me know.
Felt tips that Can be bought as spares for marker pens works flawlessly. Cut a small strip as wide and Long as the slit, and push it in. Then carefully slice the excess off, so its perfectly flush, just a little bit sticking up will push the Nib out of alignment. A scalpel is perfect for this. The feed must be in the pen while doing this.
Great video
Hi Dayne, Can I ask how big the tabs are on the extraction tool? I've ordered some 8mm tube to make one so I can disassemble my MYU - it's flowing very poorly and a good long soak and ultrasonic clean hasn't helped. It's really hard to even blow air through, so I figure a disassembly is in order. If you could share the size of the tabs to cut I'd be grateful. Thanks.
Hi, the tabs on the tool are about 2mm wide and about the same depth.
@@daynenix2832 thank you so much 🙏
I enjoyed your video. Hope your granddaughter is enjoying her fountain pen. I have many Japanese fountain pens in my collection, but only one is an eye dropper, a Namiki Emperor. I also have many vintage pens, Parkers and Sheafers which I restored. I hope to gift my pens to my grandchildren in the future - I hope they spark an interest when the time comes. Be and stay well.
Thank you for your comments. I was impressed that my granddaughter actually uses her fountain pen and wrote me a letter with it this Christmas. That is a wonderful legacy to pass on to your family.
Thanks really appreciated. This ban ei is marvelous. I have the sigar one in vermillon. They are piece of art. To add some info Visconti urushi comes in 3 different color green, dark red (not vermillion) and black in 92/92 and 100/100 LE. Some of them do not have GK mib as he died in the meantime (age 90+). Wonderful to find out a japanese lovers as I am. Never used better fountain pen than ban ei.
Thanks, I’m glad you like my video - thanks for the info on the Visconti Ban-ei - I’d love to have the dark red one
Think I've lost several auctions for Ban-ei Pens. :)
Sorry 😉
Thanks for making this video. I have a Pilot and Athena lever fillers I wanted to bring back to life. Thanks for showing the tools and sharing the suppliers as well.
You’re welcome
Thanks for another informative video. Congratulations on the new Ban-ei acquisitions.
Thank you - the Ban-ei we’re an amazing find!
@@daynenix2832 It is good they found such a good home. Cheers! Thanks again on the helpful videos.

Wow very informative. Like you I fell in love for Japanese Eyedropper. I've 3 of them and I would like to strart using the cheaper one as everyday pen. I found a webpage with similar operation using the cork instead, but not so clear as this video. May you also explain provide a video on Feeder Nib removal? It's easy to perform? Is threathed or just push-pull usually?
Thank you - the nib and feed are just friction fit - and a nice thing about some nibs is that the nib makers sometimes add additional info on the underside of the nib. Ban-ei pens have the initials or name of Ginjiro Kabutogi, Pilot pens have a date. Yes I’ll do another video on removing nibs. And then setting them. A knock-out block is helpful.
@@daynenix2832 Yeah I study whenever possible, mostly info I got are from cronicas estilografica blog, and I was lucky enough to buy a Ban-ei (vermillon) with GK nib. I also have a small maki-e with crane with a warranted nib. Now I just bough a tamenuri bori at very fair price as I plan to use it, but for sure will require some job. Looking for your nib disasseble video.
Thank you. You mentioned several tools that I now will have to start shopping around for. :) It is good to know how to repair them myself. I can only imagine how much it would cost at Mori-san's pen hospital or how many American pen specialists might not be familiar with Japanese pens. I'll look forward to your next video. Aloha!
And Aloha to you. Let me know if I can help in any way. Many pen related tools can be found at pentooling.com
Good to know that wine bottle corks work too. I’ll have to look for the circle cutters. I should add that really appreciate how you show not only how to dissemble but re-assembly. I don’t have much experience yet with that and am afraid of breaking my pens. Thank you.
Thanks. I think Dix is not the most common name but there was a famous librarian who supported intellectual freedom. There was a great Dadaist artist a century ago too.
Fine collection. These are new to me. I liked the Showa-era simple stainless pens. Perhaps because the first Japanese FP was a NOS pen I picked up in Kyoto. Never walked up Fuji-san, but Takao-san and Tsukuba-san. Cool clips on those early silver pens.
Thank you again for this. Ultrasonic is ok with stainless or celluloid ebonite or urushi ? Thank you.
Ok with stainless or modern plastic - I wouldn’t use it on Urushi or celluloid.
@@daynenix2832 thanks again. Happy you added it to the video tutorial too.
