👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Great! Ah... And seems like APSC Fuji have more dynamic range than i thought. Or at least shadow recovery
@@amermeleitor appreciate it! Yep, I’m very surprised, I don’t notice much difference from Sony. In some situations the files feel like they handle highlight recovery better than my Sony setup, but that could very easily just be bias.
Going from 35mm (digital) to APS-C to cropped medium format is a huge step. Good luck with the change!
@@RealCelticGamer thanks mate! Loving it so far
Beautiful! you used go pro?
@@germancreatives88 thanks mate! Nah just am iPhone 14 Pro strapped to top of my camera haha
Hey there, greetings from Germany! I am a hobby photographer an I just sold my GFX 50S II. The Reason: I wasn't comfortable with the autofocus and the speed that comes with it. I was thinking to buy the GFX 100S II. I shoot street, landscape and people. I also own the XT-5 What is your opinion! Should I go for the more expensive 100 II? Thoughts on this? Would love to hear your opinion. AND needless to say: THANX for rtor the great videos! They do help! Peace
@@HabibiAltun heya! Yeah, I feel your pain on the 50s II. I think the autofocus of the 100s II and 100 II is basically the same, the most significant difference for me was the buffer - 100S II had a buffer of like 17 images vs 65 ish in the 100 II. I couldn’t risk hitting buffer in key wedding moments so I went for the 100 II. So if you know you’ll need long bursts occasionally, go for the big dog - if you don’t, the 100S II will be perfectly fine. For what it’s worth, I find the 55, 80 and 110 way slower to focus than other GF lenses like the 23, 30, and 63. The latter 3 feel more like my mirror less Sony setups, super quick and smooth to focus, no hunting, etc.
You have some really amazing locations there :). Beautiful photos and excellent channel mate. Keep it up! Regards from Croatia.
Thanks bro appreciate this very much!
Thanks for the follow-up on your thoughts about the change so far . . . A few things: 1.) how are you handling the slow sync speed of the system? Or are you just shooting available light with your weddings and this camera? 2.) the music under your vids is a little hot and distracting . . . Kinda gets in the way of your VO 3.) add a practical in the background of your set, so it doesn’t look like you’re filming from a cave 😅 All-in-all though, great job - keep it up 💪🏻
@@matthewbushey9455 hey mate! 1) not using flash at this stage, available light only. 2) noted! 3) ha yeah, I recorded this at like 11pm at my studio, I just couldn’t be fucked setting up
Great short explainer . . . It’s interesting I’ve just found this video today, as I’m basically in the same position as you were a month or so ago . . . Been shooting Sony A7xx bodies for 8 years now, and for all my fashion/beauty clients, was def getting bored. Have had a 100S on loan now for a few weeks, and having shot medium format film back in the 2000’s, it’s SO nice to get back to a camera body and image file that feels more organic. I still have quibbles with the camera itself (flash sync, overheats easily, poor ergo’s for large hands) . . . But really wanting to drop all my Sony photo gear now despite those quibbles. After a month or so now, what are you finding you really love/hate about the change? System? Etc? Maybe a follow-up video soon to discuss? 👌🏻
Shit - just saw your follow-up video now 😂
Ha I definitely need to do a more generic “thoughts after the switch” video, now I’m a few months in and focus more on the x-t5 as well, as I’m using that a lot too. Certainly more content to come around this. Hope you’re enjoying the 100S!
It seems common to hear photographers say that they shoot less with the GFX. I shhot the same as FF, just make a point of editing down more.
Such a wonderful video and extremely nice pictures that you showed us. By the way how you present the video with these interruptions of next chapters and changing the frame it makes it really refreshing. 🙂 I’m still struggling to achieve that typical weddingkinda look, it was very helpful to see the before, and after to know that it’s not a different way of taking the picture but different way of post processing. Could you maybe show us how to edit these files that would be extremely wonderful. Cheers 👋
@@captaincook6283 wow thank you mate, appreciate the kind words, and happy to hear the video format is working. These are pretty easy edits with my preset, basically one click and adjustment of exposure and white balance. I’m working on an edit-focussed video now, and will have my presets up for sale (with a sharp intro offer) pretty soon!
Looking at a purchase of this camera myself, really massive thanks for making available some files to play with and examine! Many thanks from Australia mate!

100% agree Ethan. I used to shoot either 24 or 85 on Sony and slowly came to realize it wasn't for me. Felt like I was forcing it. I still found 35 to be too wide as well. 90% of my work is on the 33 1.4 or the 80 1.7. Although with the GFX, I find the 80 1.7 can be too tight and feels like an 85 on FF (even though its wider at 63). Waiting on a good deal for the 55 1.7 and I'll snag that, sell my 80 1.7.
Yeah, I feel like 50 is the focal length all photographers end up at in time. I wish the 55 1.7 were a bit snappier to focus, but it’s a real gem when you give it time and space to do its thing.
Super interesting that 50mm is 80% of your wedding work! I feel like not enough photographers support this. Honestly cracked up at the last bit 😂
Everyone has their own way of doing things, I think I’ve just found my rhythm. We’ll see if that changes with my switch to Fuji when next wedding season comes. Haha the bit where I just CBF finishing the video properly, and then compare it to a toilet? 🥲
A bit like the old days when i shot weddings we would shoot 35mm 645 and 67 , mixing up the formats .
Yep totally! Seems like mixed format is a thing of the past, but it doesn’t need to be.
“Get nice and close… even closer- oh yeah” 🔥 epic images dude!

@@JasonLawrenceNoel same! Thought it would take more adjusting coming from a 24mm on Sony, but was pretty easy. Thanks mate!

No flash! Thanks mate.
Great video and thanks for sharing the RAW files. How are you liking the Viltrox lenses?
Thanks mate! I’m really enjoying it. I haven’t used third party lenses in probably 7 years (sigma lenses when I was in Nikon DSLRs), so was skeptical at first, but I’m a believer now. Im used to the 24mm Sony GM, and this feels much the same but just a tad wider. I’ll make a proper review on it for sure.
Lovely video. Any RAW files that you could again upload for us to try? Thanks!
Thanks mate! Yep, can do! Will comment here when I’ve updated description.
done! link in description.
@@ethanlowryphotography Thank you so much. Great pictures. It's crazy how the X-T5 gets so close to the GFX in terms of quality. But sometimes the RAW files behave strangely, sometimes they are muddy even at iso 100 and sometimes they are crystal clear.
Awesome video. Possibly stupid question, but is there a way to shoot both RAW and with a simulation in jpg? Like 2 files from a single image? I'd love to shoot in a film simulation for a quick transfer with a jpg, but still have a RAW to take home and edit without a simulation applied to it.
Thanks mate! Not a dumb question at all. You can shoot RAW+JPG and it’ll bake the film sim into your JPG and give you the standard raw file as well. But even the jpgs on this beast are massive so I tend to just shoot raw only

Hey welcome to the GFX club 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I’ve been a GFX owner since the date the original came out, and I made the mistake of borrowing the new 100……..and I had to buy one to replace my original 100. Great luck with your channel and switch to Fuji
Haha thanks mate! Such a fun and interesting system. Congrats on your new 100II too!
I am a long term Fuji shooter and still on the fence whether to jump into the gfx system. I have shot with all the 50mp models and currently looking at the 100s and Leica q2. As I can get the q2 for the same price as the gfx 100s body.
Hey mate! Yeah I tossed up a Q2/3 as well, but decided to go gfx mostly for the wow factor for portraits and commercial work, and xt5 with the 18mm 1.4 because I love 28mm. I still dream about getting a Q eventually.
@@ethanlowryphotography I a shooting the xt4, 18, 33 and 50mm. Just picked up the xh2 and love the sensor but wish I got the xt5 as don’t love the body tbh
@@jasonmarkharris ah yeah, I do like the xt body style - if it doesn’t put you out too much $$ could be worth the trouble switching!

Man tell me why I’ve been feeling the same!! I’ve been using Sony since A7RIII and love it but man I’m ready for a change !! But I wish I could get a medium format Fuji camera ! I will be checking you out but that fresh start and new system sounds refreshing
Hahah it’s a thing! I think itchy feet can happen in any system, but there were sooo many people that switched around a7iii and a7riii that there’s a bit of an exodus.
@@ethanlowryphotographyyah idk I’m in a bit of a funk I am currently obsessed with film, a medium format Fuji for me who’s between professional and hobbyist I can’t justify . I have the Sony A7IV and idk where to go and nothing with the Sony just I guess like Chris said in the video a bit blah/bland with Sony
@@24streetphotography oh cool bro! If you quite like the film experience and process but want a digital platform, the gfx 50r and mitakon 65mm could be an option?
Would you still recommend it for photographers that don't need the fancy video specs? If been eyeing the GFX100II but the GFX100SII seems great too. I do portraits and headshots only
If you only do portraits and headshots, and you don’t need a big image buffer, I think the 100SII is the better move.

Great video Ehtan! Love how natural you are in front of camera. I still can't do half as good as you after making almost 500 videos! Love the way how you talk about the good and bad things
Oh cut it out!! Speaking of cutting stuff out - I recorded 55 minutes for this and got 7 usable minutes. I’m very selective 🤣
@@ethanlowryphotography oh 7 minutes from 55 mins of raw footage you definitely cut out a lot !! 😅😁 I cut out a lot too. My recent GH7 review, the original talking head video was 6 hours long. In the end my final video was 1.5 hours so you still cut out more than me😆
@@TheRealRichardWong I had about 5 more minutes of decent stuff, just decided to cut it because it kinda muddied the story and flow I think. Holy shit I’d actually go insane after 6 hours of recording. I was so over it at 55 min, I didn’t even bother recording an outro 🤣
@@ethanlowryphotography It's great that you know when to cut and throw away some stuff! Keep it short and fun :) Yeah, my review script was around 22 pages long. No way I can record 6 hours nonstop, my brain would explode! So I split that into 3 sessions 2 hours each.

ummm, great video mate :)
Hahah thank you mate
Great video, have you considered returning this for the 100S II that was just announced with even better AF? The camera releases in the States next week.
AF wasn’t better in my experience - I’ve given it a proper go. And the buffer for continuous shooting is way smaller, only 17 images ish vs 65+ on the 100II. I waited to purchase this until I could get my hands on the 100S II, would have been nice to save the $$ but the buffer killed it for me.
And thanks for the kind words!
Nicely done, Ethan. Have you tried Capture One? I know it will not suit your editing of weddings, but I find using Capture One to edit and sort my files a lot nicer than LR.
Great video, this insight is really helpful. Currently, I'm shooting on the 50S II and 80mm 1.7 for weddings (X-H2S for the more fast paced stuff). Scary slow but I have learned the ways of Contrast AF enough to be confident to know when/where I can use it. Best part of MF is you shoot so much less because you have to be intentional.
Cool man, glad you found it helpful! I shot with that same combo and just felt it was a bit too tricky to shoot alongside my Sony stuff. I think you’re ok the money with the “knowing when to use it” angle - it can be quite conditional.
