Dear Mr. Wargaming, Putting this in a comment because I don't know of any way to message you a warming question. Old to wargaming, new to your channel. I need your help. I've been dreaming of running a solo wargame campaign using some old MERP sourcebooks and maps. In particular the Angmar sourcebook has some awesome maps and detail for orders of battle for the forces of Angmar during the middle of the third age of Middle Earth. I'm envisioning a campaign centered around an ousted Dunedain lord trying to carve back some of his nearly fallen kingdom in the face of the forces of the Witch King at the height of his power. I tried for a couple of years to do this in GURPS 4th ed using the Mass Combat and Realm Management supplements, but they keep letting me down. I want to run something that can handle the scale the way AD&D can but I'm not sure it's the right fit for middle earth. Should I just do Chainmail? Give it a go with AD&D as you've demonstrated? Something else I haven't heard of? What say you? Thanks in advance. Bob

The reason I got some 15mm special forces minis from Rebel Minis was to play scenarios based on GWOT SF anti-terrorist missions. Looks these might good rules for that.

Has he activated already? If NOT he can move outside of 1 inch to the rider. And then charge in when you activate him. If he has activated then no. He can't make base contact. You can't keep fighting. That rule is to regroup for multi-figure units so they are within cohesion. And to allow ranged units to get an opportunity to use their ranged weapons before a charge (Advance rule of charge and assault). Or to use a ranged unit to fire without retaliation.

Well... This is a tough one... First of all. When you start a melee-combat you HAVE TO CHOOSE A TARGET UNIT. You can only attack the unit you declared to charge. So to my understanding melee is over when you do your consolidation move. If you could start a new melee over and over again you would get into an "illegal", endless loop. But let's say that you could... If you bring the rat ogre into a range that would "trigger" a new combat the only thing i think would happen is that the NEW unit can make a melee attack as a response, do a consolidation move itself (if both survive they both step back 1") and after that the unit charges the rat ogre and bashes him again. I don't think that the rat ogre is allowed to attack a unit he did not declare to charge. Consolidation moves, from what i understand, are ment to prevent the "lock that shooty-unit into combat"-trick. But to be honest, I've never played AoF skirmish... Just did a read through.

As much as I would love to see the Rat Ogre beat up the second rider, I lean towards "not allowed". Consolidation says to make a "move". Rules for moving state "...may not move within 1" of models of a different unit (friendly or enemy), unless they are taking a Charge action."

Great video! This game is so adaptable to various scenarios. I thought the same thing you did that the scenario was going to be one-sided but ended up being anyone's game until the very end.

These rules are even better when you start running your D&D games with them, as that was how you were supposed to run 3lbb D&D. The D20 combat was just supposed to be, "If you don't have chainmail, here's something you can use until you get it.", and not the main combat system. And it really shows when you use Chainmail man to man instead. Suddenly the weapon limit on classes makes sense and add some real depth and strategy to your combat. Remember, all weapons do the same damage and the wizard can only use a dagger. Under the D20 combat only their level matters when it comes to hit so why does it matter what weapon you have? But if you're using Chainmail.... that wizard has to really do everything he can to stay our of close combat! Even against just some dude in a shit, he's only hitting on a 6+. Also hit dice come into their own (as well as the reason they're called "HIT dice" makes a lot more sense) with chainmail. A level 1 fighter has two hit dice, he fights "as two men". That means when he attacks, he can roll 2d6 twice to see if he hits! Or he can hit once and parry, or he can hit once and switch weapons. That last one opens up some options! He can use a sword against lightly armored targets but once the heavy foot shows up with plate armor, he can switch to a mace to increase his odds. Hell, even the reason why a +1 sword makes more sense since a +1 with a 2d6 system means a massive increase in your odds to hit (something like a +14% chance of hitting). With a D20, it just adds 5%, worth almost a third of a bonus that you get with 2d6. It so unfortunate that the D20 won out since this is the main reason why so many people say D&D combat sucks. I use to be one of them but I think I'd been more open to D&D (maybe still wouldn't dethrone GURPS as my go to since I'm more a cyberpunk/sci-fi guy but would be in my rotation) if it played more like this then the hot mess it is now (which is sad since Wizards of the Woke, if you want a laugh, read the trigger warnings they now put on their older game, want D&D to be a combat game but wont let go of the D20 system that makes it suck as a combat game lol).

On that last turn the skeleton archer rolled two ones causing a turn over but then you moved some more enemies like the two tomb guards. I think that really didn't matter.

Surprised the orcs made it, that two point quality difference is powerful. Reckon they need to recruit a leader.

I love the solo play and have been working on a system for solo play for the RPG I am making. I love the Solo AD&D. I have been watching Solo traveller, but can't wait for Solo AD&D 51.

My entry into minis was late in life and I had no awareness of the old school pioneers. Hex and counter games were my experience and strategic board games like A&A. Role-playing is not of interest but I'm intrigued by its dominance in minis gaming. The RPG aspect of personalizing a perspective of the mini's character and typical fantasy theme is not compatible with my personality. This is not by choice, so I remain I trigger by RPG and players that can enjoy this gaming format. I do enjoy watching them play. Maybe with the right group, I'll step into RPG. Anywat, I would not have known anything about these earliwr minis' pioneers without this channel. Thanks.

I would be interested in you opinion of Retro Raygun by Hydra Miniatures. The minis are cool retro style and the game seems solid but thus far I have only played some solo test drives.

I painted my entire old Battle Masters set with the cheap craft paint and it looks great. One thing i ran into was the paint can get thick. I put a drop in a fidget popper thingy and I can add a bit of water to thin it out. Also having to add a couple coats of a color for good coverage is a good thing...your first technique.

I am enjoying catching up on your content. I recently retired and I want to jump back into gaming. I found Hobby Lobby has vinyl sheet for about $10 a yard. It takes paint ok on the shiny side if you rough it up but the fabric side looks great with paint, both make great field/ waste land/ alien ground and they transport easily because you can roll it up! I also slap dashed some buildings out of blister packs from hot wheels and other stuff and they look good for Gas Lands and Mech battles. All light weight too!

Forget all the Bolt Action, or 40K replay videos online; I just love the little gems you find and share. I knew of these rules and honestly had no interest in them. And now I need to get them. There are some real subtleties and clever ideas in these rules. Never would have known except for your videos. (And yeah - can't wait for those D&D map fights! Terrain always, always makes things much more interesting)

I can see this being used in a Napoleonic game between same side officers having an argument that results in a duel. Of course their commander must not find out about the duel lest they face reprimands! Or, perhaps the duelists are from opposite sides and deal personal insults on the battlefield that calls for a face-saving duel, like on Sharpe! Could be a fun little side game in between regular campaign combat. 😊
