Gran Turismo 4: RSC% "Speedrun" Explained
The RSC Rally Raid, won from Capri Rally Easy, enables the easiest progression skip in Gran Turismo 4 with its sell price of 265,624 credits. What's the fastest possible way to obtain and sell it at the start of a playthrough? With the help of Gran Turismo 3, I planned out a route and attempted to speedrun this brand-new, unofficial category of "RSC%".

Gran Turismo's "Gear Trick" Explained

The "gear trick" (aka. "transmission flip" or "transmission trick") is a vital tuning technique used by veteran Gran Turismo players in order to obtain the closest gear ratios possible. After my previous video where I built the least tyre-efficient car possible using hybriding, I decided to figure out how to build an optimal car for timed endurances. As an experiment, I decided to try and build the least tyre-efficient car possible in Gran Turismo 4 using hybriding. This was the result: a Dodge Ram with the Jay Leno Tank Car chassis (and an extra 200kg ballast all the way to the front), the Subaru 360's super soft racing tyres, the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak's drivetrain, and the TVR Cerbera Speed 12's engine. i picked up this game in ‘07 with the ol reliable slim ps1 when i was 6 years old boy, and the core memory i had were how much i love the viper gts, how excited am i when i got the viper gts-r, and how my grandma passed away on the bed behind me while i was playing this game. 17 years later when i just finished my degree thesis and knowing i have nothing to do, i decided to download duckstation and gran turismo for the sake of my nostalgia. my english and logical thinking have been improved since then and i could tune the cars comfortably, despite still can’t reach every car’s maximum potential; but hey at least i finally able to beat the SS11 2 endurance when i can’t do that back then. i’ve been diving into forums to learn how people tune their cars and just now i found your video through r/granturismo subreddit. thank you for your prolonged research and creating this video, now im invested in redoing all the event again with a more proper car settings.

  • @TeaKanji
    @TeaKanji Před 16 dny

    An extra note: you can get a tiny boost in acceleration if you apply the gear trick in a different manner, however it's much more involved and requires a lot of trial and error. The acceleration boost is most noticeable in GT2. In GT4, the boost is so insignificant from my testing that it's not worth going for IMO. The gear trick example shown in this video stores an "internal" final drive of 5.500 (the ratio when auto is set to 1), then an "external" final drive of 3.800 (the ratio after you've applied the trick and stretched out the gears). Optimally, you want the external final to be as low as possible (2.500 in this example), which means you need to figure out what the internal final needs to be, so the car's gears will be long enough after you set the external final to 2.500. In my GT2 Ultimate Guide, I outlined a method for this: go into a machine test, apply the gear trick with internal final 5.500, move 1st gear all the way to the left, lower the final drive, then test the car's launch in the machine test so it launches smoothly without stalling or excess wheelspin. Take note of the external final (let's say it's 3.500), subtract the lowest possible final from the external final to get the difference (in a car with a final range of 2.500 - 5.500, this would be 2.500, so 3.500 - 2.500 = 1.000), add a 'magic number' of 0.450 (1.000 + 0.450 = 1.450), then subtract this number from the highest possible final (5.500 - 1.450 = 4.050). Re-do the gear trick again, but set final to 4.050 instead of 5.500, then move the final slider to 2.500 and arrange the individual gears as normal. You can see an example of this here: czcams.com/video/V0FYoi88srw/video.html There is one more gear trick specific to vanilla versions of GT4 (it won't work on GT4 Online builds) that completely breaks the ratio ranges and allows you to create free-form gear ratios. When you apply the gear trick, the game stores the internal final drive used, even if you exit the gear setup screen without saving your changes. If you first apply the gear trick with final 5.500, move 1st gear all the way left and 2nd gear all the way right, save, re-enter, apply it again with final 3.600, press Cancel, then re-enter, the individual sliders for 3rd and 4th gear will be extremely misaligned and you can create ridiculously small RPM drops. You can then save, re-enter, and do it again with final 2.800 to adjust 5th and 6th in the same manner. This trick doesn't have a proper name yet, but I have some example setups in my GT4 Tune List if you Ctrl+F for "hyper-close gear setup".

    Hi @TeaKanji I am playing the Randomizer mod and I am trying to complete 100% of the game. The problem is that I don't have the Formula GT, so do you see feasible to win the championship with some LMP or Group C car? If so, which one would you recommend? Thank you very much!

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji Před 26 dny

      Since you're playing the randomiser, I'd probably suggest the Peugeot 905, since its main drawback of really slow gear shifts was fixed, and its really low weight gives it great tyre and fuel efficiency. The Audi R8 is the nicest to drive out of all the LMP's, but the Pesca Judd is a bit easier on its rear tyres, especially on tracks like Sarthe. No matter what you use though, you're going to be battling rigidity wear at the end of the championship and the car will feel very unstable, so I suggest being strategic: try to complete the championship in as few races as possible by manipulating the AI's positions before skipping races (I explain this in my GT3 guide if you need help), refresh the car's rigidity, then go back to the races you skipped individually to get 100% completion.

    I'm a pretty inexperienced player and trying to start using your tuning specifications but I'm struggling a lot more with the car spinning out compared to using more stock tuned cars, do you have any advice for preventing this? I find it hard to tell what I did wrong when my car goes haywire and it makes it pretty frustrating to try to improve. right now I'm using the Renault clio sport v6 phase 2 if it helps

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji Před 26 dny

      The Clio V6 Phase 2 is a weird one because it's really unstable due to its rear-heaviness and lack of rear grip, it needs a very careful driving style. If you're playing on emulator, the first thing I would check is your controller's analog sensitivity, since the default setting (130% I think?) is way too much and you can safely lower it to 100-110% for better control. Generally I would suggest turning TCS to 1 to avoid spin-outs due to wheelspin, but other than that, you can also try lowering the front downforce or adding a ballast to the front of the car.
