Why are most Hindi streaming shows about crime and violence? What exactly are a showrunner and a writers' room? Are Mirzapur, The Family Man, Sacred Games and Scam 1992 the new blockbusters? How do streaming shows even make money?
Through a series of conversations with actors, artists, filmmakers, producers and platform heads, Suchin Mehrotra, one of the few film journalists and critics solely dedicated to covering the world of streaming, sets out to answer these questions to help navigate and provide a narrative to the beast of streaming.

What’s it like being an established actor in 2024? What’s it like navigating and bouncing between shows and films, platforms and mediums, theatrical and streaming?
To shed light on just that, for the season finale of The Streaming Show podcast, I spoke to Jim Sarbh. It feels like the talented actor has been everywhere over the last few years. On streaming, we’ve seen him on popular shows like Four More Shots Please, the beloved Made In Heaven, and one of my favourites Rocket Boys for which he even bagged an international Emmy nomination.
He also recently started his own CZcams series Crew Cut, which I strongly recommend, in which popular actors interview the storytellers and artists behind the scenes about the craft of filmmaking.
Jim spoke to me about the ongoing …often soul-crushing conflict between an actor and artist wanting to do good work against the constant calculations of playing the positioning and perception game. Along with the current slump and uncertainty within the film industry, flitting between Shakespeare and playing the villain in his first Telugu film, his thoughts on the talent management ecosystem, and a whole lot more.

52:50 someone knows which show is this?
Did Jim just mock kids with Down Syndrome??? I'm referring to the term "mongoloid child".
Your reviews were the reason I watched some really good Indian shows
Suchin please continue doing streaming reviews on this channel
Excellent Episode except (Bengali Food-Time Line)
You are doing great (Descent) work , respectful conversation with industry experts , subscribed to your channel , have a great day
What a fantastic episode! Thanks for this Suchin!
loved this so much
where is this video!?? I can't find on channel
Which series is that vir das making it rohan joshi sumukhi?
This is how we do a great podcast
hi Suchin
Except for some repetitive questions, loved the vibe! Suchin, great job! 😅
Thank you for this Suchin!!
Loved the podcast
Jim is always my favourite. An amazing thinker
For wider exhibition you need good, rooted & relatable content which resonates with the masses. Today's content esp from the bollywood ecosystem is not just subpar, it is the opposite of it, except few of course which ironically are some of the most successful too. Taking the template & ideologies from the west & giving it an Indian flavour is not going to cut it. Whoever has their finger on the pulse of the larger audience will win, accept it.
Jim Sarbh❤
Great work Suchin looking forward to more such episodes.
Amazing interview. Such good questions and Jim's insightful musings.
Please put time stamps
Jim sarbh in made in heaven and sanju absolutely superiorrrr🙌
He was also brilliant in Rocket Boys and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway .
Can someone give me an example of a mid budget show they're talking about?
Sir it the entire nation's wish for you do come back again in Bollywood industry and do great movies once again ...🙏👍👍
Timestamps ????
Great episode...
44:02 😂😂😂 !!! Hilarious 😂Love to the editor❤️❤️. BTW, really great episode. Please don't stop!! Love this podcast
Love Sumukhi !!!!! Her ingenuity and originality, the transcendental humor !!!! Please reorder kore. Show yourself more. Express more. Representation does Matter. And we need that.
From Writing to Bengali food ..... really Varun 😭
Hey Suchin! You're doing a great job! Thanks for having these conversations! I had a request. If a screenwriter wants to pitch their bible to a producer like Siddharth, how can they reach out to them what kind of prep should a screenwriter be armed with in order to make the pitch? Could you ask a question like this to the producers/studio heads you're interviewing? It'll be a great help to aspiring screenwriters, since most of us aren't aware of the nitty-gritties of it. Thanks :)
😅😅
I am an art critic and a journalist and I so so so appreciate your questions Suchin. these conversations feel like they add to my worldview as opposed to chew out the same ol same old media - journalist conversations with artists. Appreciate you n this show a lot!
@@darshitajain65 :)
I'm a middle class Indian. I don't subscribe to any platform. Just watch CZcams.
What a great conversation! Brilliant, insightful, funny, amazing! Keep it up Brother!
These guys think people like Jhanvi is an actor .... SLOW CLAPS for these medicore editors who are just blabbering anything and trust me its all wrong !!! In a Poor Country like INDIA , there is no concept of an editor coz we don't even an apt edit culture, its the director who takes all the call's while editing , these guys are just operators who knows the software thats it ... Film Editor is itself a different narrator and that is not practised in INDIA ...
@Suchin I came across your channel today. It’s great to finally see a host who has carried out his research, can ask intelligent questions, can hold his own and let’s the guest speak rather than sharing his own life experiences (as if anybody cares about them). Keep it going.
:)
I quite enjoy your interviews. You are articulate, but please try to speak slowly. I also speak fast, and that's feedback I receive often.
Dude I love your questions! Been following your work for a very long time and really happy to see you getting such amazing guests
"4 more shots to comedy nights" 😅😅😅😂😂😂🥲
Isn't there some way the mikes can be placed from above, or attached to the interviewees? Placed in front of them makes them seem so confined and trapped.
Hahaha i thought ki budget issue sirf tv main hai editors ke liye but yeh bimari toh web series & films main bhi hai....you can pay more to those assistant editor as you only hire them... they work for you only... increse your budget na why to worry as u ppl are big name now....one more thing how to get webseries or projects as this industry only works on contacts...& new genration have very less chance if you don't have contacts...thanks for bringing behind camera's hero's in front...
Great episode! Thank you Suchin <3
Yes, more of this, please. Please bring in more editors, cinematographers and technical artists. Because, unlike other industries, people don't give them enough respect nor cover them as much as they should. There is obviously a lot of insights and knowledge that we can get them. So, thank you for doing this. 🫡❤️
20:24 Seems like editors need to have something like a Jira Board to monitor the work they have done like software engineers
I don’t understand what’s the problem if a driver gets paid more than the actor?? Please check with the cab driver who drops you at home after your shift ends, there is a high chance he gets paid much more than you do … A movie story / script is possibly the most important asset in making a movie- how much does a writer get paid?? What facilitated the agent ecosystem in our film industry?? Kalki is made with a budget of 450 crores, the Chandrayaan was carried out in a budget of 600 crores! In a country people get what they deserve to get!! We promote cheap entertainment, discard intelligence.
43:14 & 44:02 WTH!🤣🤣 Just as they are expressing how transitions and cuts are used wrongly, you gave an example of it to the viewer😂 Great job Rahul Krishnan bhai! Your work is appreciated🤌
Such a well-spoken man!
Haha I see what you guys did with the dissolve
@SumukhiSuresh you go girl!
Such a great episode. Thankyou :)))
