Common Smash 64 Myths DEBUNKED

Smash 64 is sometimes seen as the decrepit grandfather of Smash. "This time, I'm gonna keep on winning" - MKLEO GENESIS 9 INTERVIEW
You sound like the guy from You Don't Know Jack
cagt wrote the script to this entire video btw. the same guy who TO’s ultimate tourneys is extremely passionate about smash 64/remix
As a smash 64 player I have 2 mains. Fox and kirby
4:56 uhhh that's not smash 64 that's smash MELEE 64
it’s actually crazy to me that modded control sticks are just an accepted part of competitive smash
Yeah because Nintendo still CAN’T DO THEIR JOB
It’s also part of SM64 speedrunning
Awesome work! I only know surface level 64 stuff and to be completely honest I am stopping the video after 4 minutes simply because I like it that way. The smash con 64 combo contest is the one even I look forward to most every year and not knowing much about the game makes it even more magical. But if I ever get into playing 64 then I will for sure finish this video.
If you are thinking about playing Smash 64 some day, then i would recommend to play Smash Remix, a mod of Smash 64 but expanded and better, that including new characters, stages, items, game modes and etc, also a improved training mode if you want to improve at the game, etc
sheeesh l4st the goat
Always a great time on the mic
A fine and distinguished gentleman
Really well done , thank you for this 🔥
Even though I haven't played 64 in the past few months thanks to street fighter, this is the most accurate and in depth video of 64 i have seen. This game needs love, and deserves love. Play the game, enjoy the game, and learn something new. Bless Nate L for getting me into this game years ago. Long live 64. The most loving and fun group of people I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. Nothing is impossible.
Personally i can't get into it because lack of resources to improve, lack of players streaming it, nobody from my skill level, and lack of interest from local people i know since most people just stick to melee or ultimate. And if there is resources then they're too hidden because how are new players supposed to find info besides going on yt and searching for a character guide. Not to mention the fact that most people use the smash remix mod which requires a memory expansion pack, flash cart, and either retrotink or huge crt to play locally on a super old console. Emu will never feel as good as console because its going through usb and not straight to the console. Thankfully i already had this stuff and a steel stick and bowl from speedrunning so i didn't have to worry but for someone who doesn't it's an insane cost of entry. Not to mention you either have to travel variably far for tournaments hosting the game that have more than 2 players to play the game at all besides netplay. And yes the controller stick is really bad, borderline unusable for anything competitive unless it's total use time is under a month or 2. Steelstick, oudini or taostick is basically required to have any consistency in not brand new sticks.
And I thought of writing this during the second myth of "controller is too bad" and since many of these were myths of new players
Something I just started wondering about; In a world where any Smash prototype was available in the public (Melee's E3 2001 demo for example), would tournaments have prototype brackets for the appropriate games? …Probably not (for legal reasons), plus we kinda got something like that already, with SSB4Wiiu's E3 2014 demo being played at the Nintendo World Championships 2014
super cool watch :)
Talking about 3rd party controllers, RetroFighters makes a controller called the Brawler64 that’s not half bad. The stick is super smooth making dash dancing and full length pivots very easy, the only thing is tilts become harder than on OEM. In my experience a lot new ppl prefer the brawler64 cuz they find it more familiar
1. SSBM (best game produced of all time) 2. SSB 64 quite awesome. 3. SSB Ultimate. Quite ok 4. Brawl and other stuff - hardly sucks.
glad to see ssb64 getting some love it deserves, personally i think this game needs to be talked about more because on how awesome it is watching ssb64 tournaments :)
I love l4st just making pg stats videos but he gets to be as deranged as he wants. Truly the best thing to come out of the fall of panda

Riddles getting 5th in smash ult and sf 6 is insane imo
Why didn't L4st just actually watch the vod of Sonix VS Sparg0 in the intro instead of rotoscoping it?
Great question! It’s because I don’t like my editor!

Tilde said on discord he was gonna camp his dick out during the sonix set
If Tilde only had 1 upset to get to THIRD, I think we can call it a liiiiittle scuffed. Like, his run isn’t gonna be that impactful to his ranking or status, but he did get quite an amount of money. So I still respect the grind 💪
tilde benefitted from: - tweek upset - shuton dq - lima dq - jakal dq very lucky winner finals bracket run at a super major, but he did still beat kurama
Also benefitted from the Onin DQ
wtf...
and he benefitted from midnight upsetting maister
He got lucky but he did still play pretty damn good
cool video

Skyjay just casually almost winning
Every quick gag in this video made me laugh like a Cow and Chicken chatacter.
may be late to comment for a response but I have a genuine question: what keeps 64 people playing vs Melee or even ult?
People keep playing it vs melee or ultimate because they genuinely find the game to be fun competitively. The movement, the way combos are created, some people just find it more fun than other smash games.
To make you ask questions
The same reason people still play Super Street Fighter II Turbo or King of Fighters '98. Because it's fun.
Good vid. 64 best
Also nobody plays Brawl or Sm4sh today anymore, unlike Smash 64 which is still very active
Glad to see more love for smash 64 being spread around
Alabama's darling smash 64 player gamma dc here with my iconic catchphrase "hey do you want to play smash 64 I play link"
This game also just taught me how to SDI lmao
Great video but worth noting you do not need to use tap jump. The C buttons are jump buttons. However, there is no c stick for arials.
That's actually incorrect - Stick Jump (Tap Jump) and C Button jumps have different properties, and each are very important to know how to use in competitive play. This is unique to 64 and not talked about often, so I understand why people tend to ask for Tap Jump to be removed, but it's needed for this game Having no C-Stick aerials afaik is common knowledge, given the N64 controller doesn't have a C-Stick
@@cagt3000 I wasn’t proposing to remove tap jump I was saying it wasn’t the only way to jump so you don’t have to “use” it. I see how this could have been misinterpreted. I did not know that button and tap jump had different properties. What are some of the differences?
@@evanpham1891 He didnt elaborate but you can achieve different jump heights out of the traditional 2 with using the stick, Im not educated enough to know how much its used mid combo but its very useful for more precise/quick platform landing
wrong, stick jump and c jumps have both different properties in terms of height, you can also adjust the +y value with a stick jump with the smallest value being which is +53 on the y value and the max being 80 so cjump with a character goes lower while stick jump is higher but you can adjust it using certain y values ot mix up but it's difficult, mixing them up during vs mode plays a big role with combos and defence play but take notice that during running, the height gets shorter for cjump and tap jump whereas standing is higher, you also cant't shorthop with stick jump there's also a 2-3 frame buffer for stick jump and it is not present with cjumping
Really appreciate you all making this and spreading the 64 love.
I feel like 1 thing people forget is that another reason combos arent as cookie cutter is because theres no buffer here, most newer players prob assume its just as bad as the linear combos of the new games but 0 from 10 frames is a huge gap so it takes a fair bit more effort with most characters despite the hitstun.
I think the high hitstun generally makes up for the lack of buffering (at low levels specifically), but yes if you get serious about 64, having no buffer is a bigger gap than people realize
@@cagt3000 is it the same level of no buffer as Melee or is it even more sparse? Melee does have a few notable instances of buffer such as out of shield options but it's pretty sparse overall.
@@simanolastname2399 I believe Smash 64's lack of buffering is about the same as Melee, if not *slightly* more sparse (I don't know all the specifics of Melee though). But yes, you essentially have to input everything manually, and given the high hitstun, it's hard to tell sometimes when exactly you ARE able to input a move.
@@cagt3000 ok, so I checked the Smash wiki. It states that in Melee (compared to 64): Attacking after a turnaround can no longer be buffered It is no longer possible to buffer actions out of hitlag when hit with armor It is now possible to buffer actions Out of Shield after shieldstun by holding the C-stick I'd say overall it's pretty close, could honestly go both ways.
@@simanolastname2399 also there's a buffer for stick jump in ssb64, smilar to melee the window is 2-3 frames before you take another action
My favourite part was when Meta Knight said No
Another couple misconceptions I've seen are people saying Kirby is the best character, and entirely because of the uptilt. A lot of these myths were propagated by video "Smash 64 is broken", which is one of the most watched 64-related videos of all time, but unfortunately has a lot of misinformation
Yeah as funny as the video is for a good laugh, people took away the wrong ideas from it about 64, which sucks, but we're tryna fix those as best we can 😅
@@cagt3000 yeah looking back at the "Smash 64 is broken", I realized that it doesn't have as much misinformation as I thought, but I think it implied things people ran with
i love how blunt the myths are
Tbh, the N64 controller was much easier for me to get used to when starting compared to the GameCube controller, Wii remote with nunchuck and then without nunchuck, and then 3ds. It's surprisingly not too hard if you have muscle memory of Nintendo controllers in general
