Star Trek Voyager: 2 Model Kits, 1 Ship Design
Debuting in 1995, Star Trek: Voyager resulted in one of the most recognizable designs of a starship *not* called Enterprise, as well as a series of model kits that were actually produced by a rival manufacturer.

Something a bit different while I work on my next documentary video! On October 14th, 2023, I attended CAPCON in Ottawa, Canada. CAPCON is the model show hosted by IPMS Ottawa every two years but thanks to a certain global pandemic, there hasn’t been one since 2019. Once again, the event was held at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, Canada. For the whole day, the museum was home to an amazing ...

By now you’ve probably heard how a letter-writing campaign saved Star Trek from cancellation in 1968. But what if I told you that halfway into the production of season 1 something else saved Star Trek…well, sort of. Today we’re going to look back at the design of the Galileo shuttlecraft, and how there wouldn’t even be one if it wasn’t for AMT’s interest in producing a new model kit in the firs...

If there’s one science fiction model that rises above all others in terms of longevity and legacy, it’s the original AMT release of their 18” U.S.S. Enterprise from the original Star Trek TV series. It's been in production virtually non-stop since its debut in 1967! So, let’s explore the development and convoluted history of this classic model kit. Pack a lunch…this is a long one! In the first two parts of this series, we took a deep dive into every Batmobile design between 1950 and 1997 that resulted in a scale model kit. We saw how the design transitioned from a Studebaker on steroids, to a mod sixties hot rod, and finally into a neon-encrusted roadster that probably would have been more at home in a Vegas stage show than cruising the mean streets of Gotham city. How Revell Gambled on Dune...and Lost!

How does a line of plastic models based on a big-budget sci fi epic, itself an adaptation of a classic novel that had already sold millions of copies, fail so hard that the kits nearly became an urban myth? Join me as I look back at how plastic model kit producer Revell gambled that 1984’s “Dune” would be the next Star Wars…but lost big! Of the three licensed Dune kits that Revell produced, I’v...
Had the version with the light up domes and bussards, plus the original light up TMP model. Had it and the Klingon ship hung by fishing line in my bedroom.
I saw these "Dune" kits in hobby shops when they first came out, but never got them because I wasn't too crazy about the movie. That said, they have lots of potential for scratch building projects, (that 'thopter has a nice, "Steampunk" look about it.) I'd get that or the Sandcrawler now if I could find one at a reasonable price, or if Atlantis is able to reissue them. Though Revell missed out on "Star Wars," they could have reissued some of their classic, space models to bolster sales; especially their XSL-01 Moon Rocket and Space Station kits designed by Ellwyn E. Angle, and their Space Shuttlecraft and HELIOS Lunar Lander kits designed by Kraft Ehricke. (As a sidebar, Atlantis Models, who acquired the old Revell toolings, are set to reissue several Rocket and Missile kits from 1958, so it could have worked for Revell back in the day.) Thanks for sharing this. 275th Like.
Thanks for writing in! I didn’t know that Atlantis acquired some of the old Revell molds…I’ll have to keep an eye out for those kits! I would love to see a reissue of those Dune kits; the ornithopter built up into a beautiful replica, and I’ve been keen to get my hands on the sandcrawler too. Unfortunately it seems the only kit that’s easily available now is the abysmal sandworm kit.
@@scaleicons We're all in for a real treat this summer courtesy of Atlantis! Former Revell reissues include the "US Navy Bendix Talos Anti Aircraft Missile;" the "Lockheed USAF X-17 Research Rocket;" and the "US Army Tactical Missile Set." These constant 1/40th scale kits were last available in 1958! Atlantis will also be bringing back the 1/193rd "Space Force Orbital Rocket" (designed by Willy Ley) that hasn't been available since 1959. This one is close enough to be displayed with the "Round 2" 1/200th scale space kits that include the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Launch Vehicle Set (Ex-AMT,) the Space Shuttle (Ex-Lindberg,) and the new AMT "Artemis I Space Launch System." In addition to the Revell "Dune" kits, I'm hoping that Atlantis will also reissue the "Buck Rogers" Thunderfighter and Draconian Marauder kits, if they have the tooling and can get permission from the copyright holder.
@modelermark172 big news!
Nice opening shot!
Thanks Andrew…I meant to get a quick on camera interview with you, but time got away from me. Maybe next year!
I’m not going to make excuses for all the inaccuracies which are in the AMT Enterprise model, but there are some valid reasons why certain inaccuracies exist in those early kits. One example is the grid lines on the saucer. Matt Jeffries had a drawing of the Enterprise, which included the grid lines. Gene Roddenberry really liked them. Matt Jeffries didn’t like them. In order to satisfy Roddenberry, Jeffries drew the grid lines on the 11 Foot miniature’s saucer with a pencil, knowing that they would not show up when the miniature was filmed. On the side panel of those early kits, you can clearly see in the Jeffries drawings of the Enterprise, that it includes the grid lines. Another criticism of the AMT model kit, is that the teardrop shape of the second and third decks on the saucer, are shaped inaccurately. Once again, if you refer to Matt Jeffries drawings included on the side panel of the model box, you can clearly see that the model kit’s teardrop shape of the second and third decks drawing, are the exact same shape, which are featured on the model kit. This feature is not shaped like the filming miniatures, but it is accurate to Matt Jeffries on drawings. Also, a little aspect, which is overlooked are the clear green domes on the saucer. Most people believe these domes should have been molded in opaque and opaque white color. However, if you view the special effects raw footage, you can see that when the lighting is turned off in these domes, that they are in fact, green! Just something to consider the next time you hear how bad the AMT kit is.
Great insight, Mark. Thanks!
Voyagers title sequence isn’t fully CG. It’s a mix. Most noticeable is just after the title appears there’s a very obvious and prominent close up of the model flying by
9:31 you pronounced ‘decals’ like I always have! Must be a Canadian thing. I only hear people these days pronounce it Deeeee-cals.
Yeah it’s very Canadian. I grew up with and am still surrounded by people who say “deckle”. I really only ever hear “Dee-cal” when I watch CZcams videos.
@@scaleicons Very cool to hear, I am from Alberta, and thats what I grew up with.
I am too, originally. But I spent 30 years in the military moving around the country, and heard “deckle” everywhere I went. I’m in Ontario now, and that’s the pronunciation at my local IPMS club too.
Great idea for a video! Thanks for the history lesson. Anything about the tough little ship Defiant would be awesome as well.
Thank you! Hmmmm….Defiant….an excellent suggestion!
Little...#$%^*■ !?!?
1:54 looks like the ENTERPRISE D in a way
Yeah, all of his designs look like they inspired later generations of Star Trek designers.
4:13… “Voyager was unique. Not only was it the first Star Trek series on network tv since 1969…”. Are you kidding me? ST:The Animated Series, TNG, DS9… I guess those skipped network airing and were only available on cable and VHS then!?!?! Check your facts before uploading… I mean you even took the time to add that as text in your video and still didn’t catch yourself. If you can’t get that simple fact right, why would I stay to watch and listen to anything else?
Those were *syndicated*, not network tv productions. Voyager was the first Trek produced by a network for air on a network. Thanks for watching.
@@scaleicons Perhaps that is the fact that should have been presented in the video instead. Syndication… especially first airing… only means that there were not any network exclusivity deals. Any individual station, regardless of network affiliation, could choose to purchase Star Trek for broadcast in their market. All Star Trek prior to Voyager, did in fact, air on network tv!
Really wished they would have made an Akira class.
Me too. The Akira is my favorite ship that is not a hero vessel. And I like it better than many of the heroes.
DE-CALS... #decals stop pushing deck-els.
It’s how we pronounce it in Canada. 🙂Thanks for watching! #DECKELS
I got the 97 Revell kit and spent 6 months meticulously making it only to have my ex wife(now) to get mad at me and throw it through a window. Needless to say, it didn’t survive…
Yikes! That’s a shame.
It’s funny even Hallmarks Voyager ornament was halfassed model. The paint and body details were okay, but the lighting was terrible!! I have one of the early AMT Voyager kits still in the box, I never liked any of them, it’s just a boring look.
Great video. Many of those models give me ideas for some of my stuff. I finally got s chance to find and watch it. Congrats again for the hardware/recognition both you and your sons received for your entries. Yes, this is a "bucket list" trip for me as well. I thought it was farther west and south than it is located so maybe a trip is in the works. I'm working on a couple of scratchbuilds and trying to finish at least two other Bandai SW kits - both X-Wings. I'm going to have a hard time getting them done for Torcan or even Heritagecon let alone for Wonderfest. LOL
Thanks for the kind words! I know what you mean about having a hard time getting things finished…I’m always racing to the finish line with my builds, and putting the final touches on my models the night before a contest, even when I have a year to build something! Hopefully you can get your kits built…maybe you can enter them in Wonderfest 2025!
@@scaleicons - we shall see. A lot of life can happen between now and then. In the meantime good luck with your projects!
Thank you for correctly pronouncing the word decal "dekal". It is painful to listen to ignorant Merkans incorrectly pronounce it. Then again what do you expect for such an ignorant country.
Built them all, except for Bandi voyager.Still have them all.
I built the revell kit for a friend but I found 2 major errors. 1, two of the upper decals are actually handed but were printed the same making 1 unusable. 2, the shuttle was actually to big to fit through the bay door
Fascinating! I knew the shuttle was out of scale, but I hadn’t heard about he decal issue. Thanks for writing in!
Great information, but my brain blips out everytime you say the word decal
Thanks Matthew. As for the pronunciation, it seems to be regional (Canadian). I’ve been saying it this way for over 50 years as has everyone else I know up here, including all my IPMS peeps. Rather than changing, I’m owning. #DECKELS 😉
I still have the original 95 Revell kit hanging in my old childhood home. I remember it being a fun kit to build.
Very cool! I used to hang all my kits in my bedroom too…but that was 40+ years ago. I wish I still had them! Thanks for commenting🙂
This was great! I know the next Star Trek kit Round Two are producing is the Cerritos from Star Trek Lower Decks - I've seen footage of the prototype abs I cannot wait.
Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I saw the prototype in person at Wonderfest this year, it looks fantastic and I plan to pick one up myself!
Revell also produced the Voyager the Maquis Ship and the Kazon Fighter as 'Mini' kits 1996, around 2 1/2 to 3 inches long each
At one point you say Racing Champions, AKA RC2, developed into Round2 models, wrong!! Back in 2003 a company called Playing Mantis was the original owner of Polar Lights along with a line of die cased called Johnny Lightning, RC2 wanted the Johnny Lightning line so they bought out Playing Manits. Some time after that Tom Lowe who founded Playing Matis founded Round2 models was able to borrow the molds from RC2 and began rereleasing the old AMT Trek kits along with improved decal sheets and was eventually able to buy all of the model kit molds from RC2 and at least 2 of those Star Trek kit molds were made more accurate.
You can tell the cgi voyager from the model on the show, the physical model didn’t have lights in the windows under the hanger deck due to the mechanism that moved the engines up and down
Good catch!
BTW your audio could be a lot better, it’s mostly muffled and hard to hear! Decent video though.
"Unintentional Sexism"? Oh brother! It's a fact that most sci-fi fans, Star Trek fans, and model builders are boys and men. That's not discriminatory, it's just reality. Otherwise, this was a great, informative video! 🤔🤓😉🖖LLAP
I built the 1/630-scale Voyager shortly after Revell released it and it went together very well.
The " dimples are wh3re the transporter lets out.
I have all of these kits, in my opinion the Revell kit is far superior in both scale and detail. But the best one of all is the Bandai model, it's expensive now and I don't consider it a “model kit“ in the classic sense, more like a piece of IKEA furniture with some assembly required, but it's a beautiful model!
I can’t argue with that. Because of the smaller size and molding limitations, R2 had to skimp on some of the details for their kit. I’ve never built a Bandai kit, but it looks impressive.
Excellent documentary video! I've got two of the 1/1000 kits and 3 of the 1/670 scales to be given different names. I also scored one of the special edition sets that are in the 1/1400 scale to match the other 1/1400 ships. 1/1000 scale is definitely friendlier for the display shelf. I also love the sheer number of Trek models in that scale. It really helps you compare the sizes of the different ships.
Thanks for the kind words! I do agree that after decades of AMT box scale releases, having a consistent line of 1000 scale ships to display together is a dream. I picked up the PL kit before this video, but passed on the larger Revell kit because it was just too expensive to buy overseas and ship to Canada. That said, I’m very surprised with the size of the PL kit and think it will look great with my own 1000 scale fleet.
I love your videos, there's not enough of them but I'd say they take an age to research.
Thanks very much! Yep, they take a long time, and as I’m a one-man show there’s always so much competition for my time from real life. Thanks for watching and for your support!
Thank you SO much for this video. I could write forever but will limit it to my first Enterprise kit. It was the '68 version with lighting in both the upper and lower "Saucer" sections as well as the Nacelles. I built it and put it on my dresser (I was a kid at the time), and it would sometimes light up on its own during the night. Spooky. I was a pretty savvy kid and figured it was due to my build. I'm now 62 years old and last year I was able to find an original of that particular kit online. I did pay up for it but was happy to. It had the original plastic wrap and I've yet to open it! I will at some point, but just looking at it, knowing it's been unopened for decades is a joy to behold. I enjoyed your video tremendously. Thank you for what you do.
Michael, thank you so much for your kind words! Knowing that I’m reaching people like you and providing enjoyment and nostalgia is the real reason I do this. Thanks for your support and your attention. I hope you continue to enjoy my videos.😃
Well done! I always thought the Voyager was the only thing from the show that got a model
Thanks John! Yeah, it’s weird how Revell only produced the 3 kits, and now they only do the Voyager itself.
Your videos are so good, it is obvious you put a lot into researching the topic and make it interesting to watch.
Very kind words, thank you Margaret! I spend so much time on research and finding just the right elements to illustrate the story; it’s a ton of work as I’m a one-man show. But it’s a labour of love too, and comments like yours make it worthwhile!
I still have my special edition Voyager in the box pin & all I'm sure the decals are probably no good by now😆
Awesome! One of 20,000! the decals may still be useful if you spray them with a coat of decal varnish.
@@scaleicons thanks for the tip🖖
The only problem I had with the reissued Aurora kit was when it was finished Batman and Robins heads barely cleared the height of the doors, I think they made the seats to low.
The proportions of the old Aurora kit were definitely wonky…just like the old Corgi die cast Batmobiles with their shortened front end and lengthened back end.
I've built the 1991 and the most recent Polar Lights releases. The PL is very intricate and detailed, and can be frustrating at times. The 1991 wasn't too shabby, but looks like Poor Uncle Ed compared to the PL version. 🖖
Hey just noticed a cute little robot on your thumbnail. Is this part of Wonderfest? 😊
Good eyes, Margaret! Nope…that’s G.U.S. (Generally Useful Synthezoid). He’s the newest member of the Scale Icons team, and you’ll be seeing a lot more of him in future videos!
The Velma model show a different view of her.Wow❤.
Jinkies!
Brings back memories from the 1970s. I do remember having problems getting the engine pylons to connect to the main body. It took a lot of time holding things in place!
I think the only time I got them straight was when I built it for the fifth (and most recent) time….about 15 years ago!!!
Did not know you were from Ottawa as well. Great video and 'trip report'. So many fantastic models that it would be excruciating having to judge at this event. My personal 'sentimental' favourite is the Land of the Giants diorama. You and your family are very talented model builders. Aside from building and painting a few Warhammer figures years ago, my son has no interest in models, so consider yourself lucky. It's a long trip but I'm hoping that I can make it down to this event one year. (PS: The unknown paint scheme of that Gallileo at the 6:45 mark is the classic Ford GT40 of the 60's '24 Hours of Lemans' car racing.)
I don’t envy the judges either…so much good work on display. I’m very happy with the open judging system they use, it would be so unfair (not to mention difficult) to whittle everything down to 1st, 2nd, 3rd. That Land of the Giants diorama was quite cool! Thanks for the compliments too…I’ve been building with the kids since they were old enough to hold a paintbrush; they’re now in their 30s and 20s and still active in the hobby. Thanks for identifying the paint scheme, and thank you for commenting!
Great Vid! Glad you had a great time at Wonderfest!
Thank you!
18:11 that Ornithopter is spectacular. That a scratch build? It has to be, I can only ever find the Meng kit. I'm hoping I'm wrong and there is a larger one. I love the Villaneuve Dune 'thopters.
Had to have been…it was way too large to be the Meng kit. When you was editing the vid I realized there were two large ‘thopters on display, and I didn’t even realize. THAT’s what I meant by sensory overload, LOL!
Thank you, always love to see summaries of such events, since they are always too far for me to actually visit
I’m glad you enjoyed it Max! Hopefully you can get to something this one day…it took me over 20 years of trying, but the stars finally aligned.
Cool vlog, so many talented people that build sci fi models. Well done 😊
The talent on display was amazing! Thanks for your comment Margaret!
A really good look at the history of the shuttle, thanks!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I built 1 on 1976 I am used it try to take effects pictures of it using black velvet and glitter. Hey at least a hobby store back then asked to put a 5x7 of it in one of their showcases. I was pround of that only being 13 at the time. Then about 88 I built another one this time spending hours and hours sanding off those horrible grid lines on the top of the saucer. I filled in those dimples on the bottom as I remember. Good times.
I believe the AMT kit was also use in Trouble with Tribbles as seen through the window of the space station. I build my first in the early 70s, wires and lights and all. The nacelles were always a problem but I loved it.
Yep, it sure was! Thanks for the kind words!
Just out of curiosity, are any of these kits available in Canada? Or is there an on-line site I can go to? Nice documentary! 'Live long & prosper'.
@garysteven4836 the Round2 re-releases are still widely available up here in Canada. If you can’t find any in your local hobby store, I’m almost certain many of the larger online hobby stores like Sunward Hobbies or Great Hobbies, or even Amazon Canada should be able to hook you up. If you’re looking for an older issue, eBay is your best best. Thanks for the kind words about the video too!
I have every Batmobile model because my friend George Barris gave them to me after he had them made
1:58 I also like the other modtles to like the K7 space station with with its Enterprise miniature the Klingon battle cruiser the romulan Wartburg the Enterprise bridge model Mr spark stunning a multi-headed dragon cuz I believe he'd rather study it then kill it and even the interplanetary UFO which sadly did not make Star Trek. That's too bad because I thought it was the gorn star ship....
I always thought the model, shuttlecraft should have had a transparent top so you can set up a diorama inside and be able to look in on it from above.....
An interesting idea. Many years ago, I misremembered once seeing the top half being molded in clear styrene!
I built this kit several times when i was a kid along with the 3 piece phaser, tricorder and communicator. Me my brother and neighbor would rig up Christmas tree lights with a 9V battery for lighting on the phasers. I always wondered if they ever used the AMT kits of the Enterprise in the TV shows. That's cool!
