A 365 day challenge to only Eat what we could Catch, Grow, Harvest or Raise.
When the pandemic hit, and supply chains were breaking down, we wondered what would happen if things got worse. Could we provide enough food for ourselves to survive if we had to? We decided to find out.

HOMESTEAD SCRATCH COOKING //Chicken Soup with Vegetables !!!
We looked for a video about this because we used a trail cam to see what was killing our quail. We thought for sure it was a weasel. Could not believe my eyes that an owl was the perp! How he can kill the quail from outside the pen is mind boggling to me.
I have never seen potatoes planted in that fashion- meaning allowing the stems to come out the sides of the bag. I always thought you had to cover them as they grew to get a higher yield.
How long does the salt stay fresh for since there's no preservatives in it? And do you store it in the fridge or in the cabinet if you're doing this in the summer and it's hot?
Great video!! 👍👏👏
Man that’s a lot of salt 🧂
I did it. This salt has excellent taste. Once, I made a mistake using my microwave. It killed my microwave. 😅
Could you please put the link where did you buy those set of screens?... thanks
Where did you buy that screen, please provide link and what should be the size od the openings? Thanks
I would never book anything online with knowing the address prior.
I didn't learn a thing in this video. You said "Let's get into it" and then basically played a music video. Sorry mate but this was not helpful. I'm a homesteader that just learned of Hipcamp today and was looking for informative videos and yours started off nicely but I learned nothing. It was basically one long intro with far too loud music. I kept waiting for the information on how well it worked for you....experiences you had as a host, etc. but it was a big ol nothing burger. I could have got this much info from the Hip Camp splash page. Lame.
Well thanks for wasting my fucking time. Your title should say, "Here's an MTV music video on how to Hipcamp"
Miss you guys
Your floor was already clean so what did it clean? Thumbs down lady
Why do you people put some debri ..trash or something down so we can see the suction
I cried when you cried about your turkey. I've been there with our chickens. It's the hardest part about homesteading. You really do fall in love with your animals.
Stack the sifters so you can do have to do it so much
Cool place - so in S TX this would be a winter crop? What's the ideal temp?
what size mesh?
What about the bitter magnesium salts that are left? They are bitter. Luckily, there are ways around it if you search it up. I DO know that Magnesium salts evaporate faster than table salt.
Doesn't it need to be cooked before curing? I noticed you ate a piece of the cured meat just like that.
If you open it and use the one egg do you then have to use all the eggs? Like are they all going to have to be used even though you took only one?
Yes, the others will still be fine as long as they are submerged
Thanks
I have the same reaction to blistering habaneros and serranos under the broiler. I feel your pain.
Did you make an update video?
We have decided that September is our start date for our family to live like this, for 30 days. We have a 3, 4, and 5 year old who eat ALL day long lol, so we will see how long our food lasts so we know how much to grow to last us a year. No milk, or meat. But we have tilapia, a river down the road to fish, beach is a couple hours away for salt and such, we have a 1,000 sqft garden and chickens for eggs. Our goal is to do a year, and possibly forever, except for eating out here and there. Hopefully we will have a milk source, and more meat sources in the future We live in north florida (too hot to grow most stuff in the summer and too cold to grow most fruit trees and veggies in winter)
love it you made it so simple :D
seems like you used the same amount of packaged seeds to produce the same mount of wheat berries? if not what kind of ratio do you think you produced? How much of the grass blades can you harvest without sacrificing berry production?
Cool! I've wondered about growing wasabi! Sadly what we have in NA is mostly horseradish with little actual wasabi. Horseradish I do grow. This fall will give that a try...or maybe summer. Maybe sooner!
Melange
I have honey sugar, could You do this with covering it in salt and sugar, to give it an added flavor?
I understand the first and second tier drawers, how does the third drawer play in? Is it space to grow beetles and move them up to the first tier ?
How will he work in multi-room apartments, for example, two bedrooms and one kitchen, will he move into each one in turn?
Uuuuummmmmm
In my country the temperatures are always high over 30°! In my case directly in the fridge?
If you grow them in deeper pots, like a whiskey barrel, the roots will grow longer. That’s what the lady who grows commercial wasabi in Oregon does at her home. At their wasabi farm, they grow in the ground, under canopy for shade. I buy my wasabi plants from their farm.
@suziet6176 I'd be interested in knowing who you bought from and does she ship? Thanks!
Boo fuckn hoo liberals
I had sea asparagus 2 years ago via misfits market and its a fave veggie! I wish i could find it here!
What size of the mesh did you use for the beetle bin? Also what size is that sifter?
It is easier and quicker to just use a large spoon to get the juices and fat. Also, if you use a bit of the juice with the fat to cook the vegetables in. It adds even more flavor compared to just the fat. That said, it was delightfully amusing watching you and hearing your husband's enjoyment in watching you 😄
Mealworms will eat styrofoam if they are starved without anything else to eat. Put a piece of fruit in the same bin with the styrofoam and see what gets devoured first.
Can I use my vacuum sealer instead of the saran wrap?
Thanks bro!
A little tip, when your putting things in you water you want out just put it in a teabag.
If you are burning the salt then it might not be salt. I wonder if you shouldn't evaporate down to powder then heat it much hotter and burn off any unmated material. Then add water and filter again.
How often do you give them fresh veggies and fruit? Thx ❤
About once a week 👌
Hi! How many total seed potatoes did you plant in that feed bag?
Where do you put them come winter? Thank you!
We have them in a basement. They can survive pretty cold temperatures, but their reproduction cycle will slow waaayyy down if it's cold. The warmer you keep them the fast they will keep breeding and grow
Much respect to you. This is already great content and Im not even finished watching. You are a credit to humanity. Not even joking about that. Stay blessed.
Thanks so much. Appreciate that very much. Glad you are enjoying following along
How do you know the difference between young and old leaves
The new leaves come out as "shoots" in a tight spiral
Would be interesting to compare the beetles from the study group to the beetles without any Styrofoam ingestion since they pupated with it in their tract. You combined them again after a week, correct? I'm a (very small) mealworm farmer and this is very exciting. Thanks for sharing!
