Ancient Coins Unboxing Grading Results - Greek Roman
Follow me on IG: rockysramblings?igsh=MWlmaGszZGNveWVwNg%3D%3D&
Ancient Greek and Roman coins are not only fascinating artifacts of antiquity but also crucial to understanding the economic, political, and cultural life of these ancient civilizations. These coins, ranging from the modest copper pieces to gold staters and denarii, provide a wealth of information about the societies that produced them.
### Ancient Greek Coins
The origins of coinage are often traced back to Lydia, an ancient kingdom in what is now Turkey, around the 7th century BCE. The concept of coinage quickly spread to the Greek world, where it was enthusiastically adopted and adapted. Greek coins are noted for their aesthetic qualities and the high level of craftsmanship involved in their production.
#### Types and Characteristics
Greek coins were typically made from gold, silver, and electrum (a natural alloy of gold and silver), with bronze used for smaller denominations. The most famous and widely used Greek coins include the Athenian tetradrachm, which featured the owl of Athena, symbolizing wisdom and prosperity. Coins from Corinth often depicted Pegasus, the winged horse, while those from Rhodes bore the image of a rose, a pun on the city’s name.
#### Iconography and Inscriptions
The imagery on Greek coins was rich with symbolism and reflected the values and deities important to the issuing city-state. For example, the coins of Athens prominently featured Athena, the city's patron goddess. Similarly, coins from Olympia depicted Zeus, reflecting the religious significance of the site as the location of the ancient Olympic Games.
The inscriptions on Greek coins, typically in Greek, included the name of the city-state or the ruler who issued them. These inscriptions, along with the iconography, served not only a monetary function but also a propaganda purpose, reinforcing the authority and identity of the issuer.
### Roman Coins
Roman coinage evolved from the earlier Greek models but developed distinct characteristics that mirrored the growth and transformation of Rome from a Republic to an Empire.
#### The Republican Period
In the Roman Republic, coinage initially consisted of heavy bronze pieces known as aes signatum and aes grave, which were cast rather than struck. By the 3rd century BCE, Rome began producing silver coins, the most famous being the denarius, which became the backbone of Roman currency for centuries.
Republican coins were characterized by their portrayal of Roman gods and goddesses, symbols of Rome’s foundational myths, and sometimes historical figures. For example, the goddess Roma, a personification of the city, frequently appeared on Republican coins.
#### The Imperial Period
The transition to the Imperial period under Augustus brought significant changes to Roman coinage. Coins became a vital tool of imperial propaganda, with emperors depicted in a god-like manner. Portraits of emperors adorned the obverse of coins, while the reverse featured various themes, such as military victories, public works, and deities.
Gold coins, known as aurei, became more common, alongside the silver denarii and various bronze denominations. The iconography on these coins was used to communicate the emperor's legitimacy, accomplishments, and divine favor. For example, coins of Augustus often depicted him as the bringer of peace and prosperity, while those of Trajan emphasized his military victories and contributions to public welfare.
#### The Decline and Reforms
By the 3rd century CE, the Roman economy faced severe inflation and debasement of the currency. The silver content of the denarius decreased, leading to a loss of confidence in the currency. To address this, Emperor Diocletian introduced a series of reforms, including the creation of new coin types such as the argenteus and the follis, and the re-establishment of a more stable monetary system.
### Numismatic Legacy
The study of ancient coins, known as numismatics, offers a window into the past, revealing details about the economic conditions, trade networks, political changes, and cultural priorities of ancient Greek and Roman societies. Coins are among the most durable of archaeological artifacts, and their widespread circulation means that they often provide more information than other types of evidence.
In conclusion, the coins of ancient Greece and Rome are invaluable for understanding these civilizations. Their artistry, inscriptions, and the sheer volume of surviving specimens enable historians and archaeologists to piece together aspects of ancient life that might otherwise remain unknown. The legacy of these coins continues to influence modern currency design and the study of economic history.

VAM Grading Results 1878 - 1880 Morgan Dollar VAM Hunting
The JFK'S have a strange look about them, real shiny. I would like to get 2 of each, that way I would have a replacent
What do you think about heritage auctions.
I haven’t used them.
I usually have a sink of hot water to rinse, I find streaks don’t form later in the slab.
Money wasted for grading coins😢😢😢
I know little about this, but I’ve seen several posts regarding cleaning coins that’s not detected by firms like PCGS…my only thought is, if it becomes common, couldn’t Firms like PCGS simply devise a way to detect the presence of those chemicals used?
Since you are dissatisfied with PCGS cleaning (I have no experience one way or the other), thinking you can do better, as an experiment, crack them out and do your process on them. If they improve, then you are better. If they don’t, then you have to question your opinion. I’ve seen many comments online asserting that milk spots can’t be removed. Have you proven otherwise ?
Yes. See my other videos. I’ve cleaned my coins and had them straight graded at PCGS and ANACS.
COOL CAR
Works well with MS grade coins but not so good with circulated coins.
You don’t want to make a heavily circulated coin look super clean. It’s suspicious.
Just so you have coverage or you can blame it on postal worst case and at least get it insured if it's worth something
I’m not sure why one would send in pennies from pocket change and expect them to be $600 coins. It will always be a losing game.
🤦🏼♂️
CACG
Great video. But I’m glad you did that and not me. I would have needed CPR.
Let me borrow them ill give it back as soon ill find a few of those dollars 😂
That's gotta be cool, a water systern
About 30 years ago I purchased a 1906 proof Indian head penny graded proof 55 harshly cleaned graded by ANACS recently submitted to PGCS and graded proof 61
Interesting
They are big on "questionable color" at pcgs. I sent something in 20 days ago, and all they did so far was marked received. Is anyone quicker?
ANACS is usually quicker and fairer in their grading. PCGS is too quick to label any line as cleaned.
Live and learn.
Hey question my fiance collects these and I want to get him a graded coin since he does not have any but i do not know the grading as the one im looking at is like yours but idk hoe to identify the rating
1-70 is the scale. MS60 or higher is considered uncirculated and the better quality. If it’s a proof coin it’s the same number grade but it will say PR instead of MS. Hope this helps
@rockysramblings thank you ! I purchased him a simple Mercury coin that's graded PR70 for 9 bucks :) he was looking at some cheap coins for now since he is new into this. Thank you for.your response and help
I cannot believe the spread of an MS63. Some to me looked like an AU58, others like a MS64 and everything in-between. PCGS sux the big one.
czcams.com/video/qx5WULEFnws/video.htmlsi=hyxqO0SGpa9O6ghM
The whole 'Cleaned' grading is absurd. Clean anything else in this world and it just brings out the original intent. But not so for coins, ridiculous.
Awesome experiment!
Thank you
The 1882-S Morgan Dollars have 5 Concave Obverse VAM's that somehow are often overlooked beauties much like the Spagheti Wing VAM from 1878-S. Some varieties never got any love -- YET!
I have a suspicion that PCGS is using AI to look through coins to be graded. AI doesn’t have the skills like a human to know the difference and nuances between some scratches caused by rubbing up against something vs cleaning…
So sneaky of them to list varieties but not recognize them and then charge full price. Ugh
The confusion is intentional
I think ANACS grades more accurately. Yeah the 1881 is maybe cleaned however i could see anything. Gorgeous morgans all the way
Thank you!
Anacs lover! Alright!
You do know you have to pay an extra fee for them to grade errors and varieties right? Trust me it wasn't over looked they just want that $
I did pay for it
Um dos carros mais bonitos que a Ford fez um sonho
Read page 32 of the 9th edition of the Mega Red coin book.
👍🏻
Maybe the stuff coming off has trapped dirt which causes scratches.
🤔
So pretty much BS on the whole hobby good to know but the coin not the holder reinforced thanks
I'm excited for you.

"oh crap" drops it down the drain "oh 🤬" a grain of sand can hide a mountain (if in your eyes) or scratch a surface. Marble mechanic.
Dunno man, feels like first world problems man. All those amazing coins, feels pretty amazing to have such a collection? Get a job there brother, perhaps you can raise the bar for all of us
🤔
@rockysramblings Agreed! 😤 You have endless knowledge on grading other professional coin graders. Also, who does PCGS think they are? Offering you to make it right by shipping it back with photo proof of the mistake? The nerve! Then they try to get your error/variety label slabs back! Shame! Glad your not complaining brother stay blessed.
Just goes to show you that grading companies are 💩 And grades mean Zilch
Great video. What scope are you using?
PCGS 1987-P ? … #6 Ink pen label says 1987-D …??
I remember reading that PCGS has some kind of sniffer machine that can read the chemical residue on the surface of the coin…so your taking a big risk with them! Save your money! Don’t do it!
I did it! I made a video of it czcams.com/video/LwnBnXF-N7A/video.htmlsi=wGMSusu725ekH4o4
To be continued (re-submitted)...
I am diehard to NGC. ANACS is best value
PCGS
👎🏻
Eye agree with u on cleaning or restoring Eye myself use tarnx silver cleaner Then use a little dish soap with warm water to remove all the tarnx It doesn’t remove the cartwheel or luster And really improves the eye appeal of the coin Give it a try
I have never liked coin grading services . Never .
Soak cotton ball, no wiping.
I wiped. PCGS certified 🤷🏼♂️
get over it is clean. anacs is now 4th tier grading service with the advent of Cacg. no young graders to complain about. top graders only. send your coins there and see your true grades.
I will only use ANACS. It is totally fine to preserve coins. Using a grading system to intice you to pay them for preservation is B.S.. Almost demanding you to use the service they provide.
This doesn't sound ethical at all and who really has the ability to just take out $150000? I mean....really
It’s a joke 😅 I realize most people can’t do that
