You really need a skiving as opposed to leather for this job. Essex Galleries in the UK will do a variety of colours and will also emboss to your specifications. Note that some writing slopes had a surface of blue velvet. A rubber roller is useful to ensure the leather is evenly glued down. Traditionally wallpaper paste would have been the glue to use, this is good because it's forgiving. When cutting the leather with a craft knife, try to be perpendicular to the surface. as the underneath of the leather is lighter than the surface, however a dark wax stick will infill any mistakes. I agree with the comment below about French polishing. If you need to replace the cloth underneath the box to stop it scratching then a piece of linen would have been used.

Disappointing! You gave a lot of exposure to your rust removal but nothing on the sharpening of the iron. The plane will work with a bit of rust but it will not work without a sharp blade. Like the fact that it is so simple and yet does the job. Lot of times we complicate sharpening. I am planning to build one and would probably take the idea from here. My main thing is to keep it high enough for me to be able to stand and sharpen. So, I am thinking I will put in some large diameter screws and bolts to tighten the saw between the two plywood pieces since the vise jaws may not be enough if the jig sits too tall

If you ever have a damaged 9v battery connector in any device, use pliers to peel the metal case off a dead 9v battery and cannibalize the battery's terminal board. You can solder directly to the back side of the terminal board. Remember to make your connections in reverse from how the polarity is labeled on a 9v battery. When making your solder connections, the positive wire goes to the large terminal and negative wire goes to the small terminal. It's free and it's dead easy!

Glad you've managed to get back to this Project Steven, looking good, thank goodness for old family photos ! I think it would be worth securing another cross bar in those holes at the bottom I'm sure it would help to stiffen it up, better still a pair of diagonal cross braces between these holes and the brass pole. I guess you could even attach a wooden block under the plywood top and run the braces to that ( though the pole might get in the way ) - anything diagonal would help keep it from racking ! Looking forward to seeing the top restored too !
