Seaplane Inspection Pickup & Splashing In a Bunch of Amazing Lakes!
Hitched a ride to Northern Michigan to pickup my Seaplane from it's condition inspection. Bonus! There's a ton of amazing blue lakes up there and I got to splash into a bunch of them on my way back home.

VFR Flying South Carolina to Michigan. Long Cross Country For Work in my Tiger.
zhlédnutí 604Před měsícem
I planned to make this 2 leg, 5hr flight IFR, but I cancelled and went VFR after I couldn't get through the Charlotte Bravo Airspace. Stopped for a very cheap and good hamburger at the Cloud 9 cafe. Battled some new vibrations in the airplane, persistent headwinds, and gnarly crosswind landings at both stops. Great little day of flying!

Man. 😩 I will own one of these someday soon, and I’m gonna take it EVERYWHERE. Thanks for posting
Great Job! I am right behind you starting my first year of ownership of my A5. Boy are you right, insurance is NUTS.
Fly this in a sim regularly and gets absolutely bullied by the wind. Would love to fly a real one, looks sporty😉
1:03 that has to be THE BEST way of presenting a graphic I have seen
Thanks haha
I fly a cygnet in miami , less expensive. 😊
Fantastic journey, Guys. Cool airplane, too! Just a heads up: Lead is not in any way a lubricant. Enjoy!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your videos and your thoughts. Very inspirational!!!
Thanks!
When's the last time the motor mounts were changed
Good one yea. But it was only 2 years ago.
How are you liking it? I have a place up in Northport, MI (5D5) just north of TVC. My Cirrus was just destroyed in a tornado so I get to consider changing my airplane journey.
I love it. It's a fair-weather aircraft, but it's the most fun ever. I've had it up to Northport and Suttons bay! Love that area. Sorry about your Cirrus...
Next time your up that way feel free to park at my beach. We’re .25 from town, south of the marina. No need to ask, just show up and pull in. If I see you I’ll say hi. All seaplanes are welcome. maps.app.goo.gl/N4RA1bTsQWQdAjSz5?g_st=ic
northern michigan is beautiful. - great touch-n-go's !!!!, i used to ski northern mich. , boyne highlands, boyne mountain, nubs-nob, among others, but the water up there is like none other.
❤🎉
Be the Swan NOT the Duck, son.😉😉
I love airplanes... Glad you do too.
gonna be gnarrrrrly
Nice landing. Looked tricky. And, like, wtf with not getting you through Charlotte
Outstanding. Keep at it.
Nice landing! This April in Mi sure has been windy I fly out of Z98
It’s been really windy. All that warm air in and out has made it interesting.
you had to wrestle that down.
Both times. That whole flight was a lot of work!
I live near Charlotte. Their runways are north south. They're never going to let you cross over the top from your direction. Your best chance would be to line yourself up so that you cross over the top going pretty much due west and staying low at 4000-5000 so that you don't interfere with the airplanes flying downwinds at 10000. T398 is the route they want you to take to cross. Sometimes they let you use it. Sometimes they don't. I don't know why. Re: the vibration, when I had a similar problem, my A&P suggested that maybe my nose wheel was vibrating in the wind and that was translating into the cabin. Maybe stick a camera on the tail tiedown to see if anything is vibrating on the gear...? Wow. Cool effect pulling the car out and putting the airplane in.
Thanks for the tip! It looks like it might have been one plug going intermittent.
Great video - The deserts at Cloud 9 are incredible - 2 hours from me KAAS, but worth the hop over.
Dang! I usually get desert to go but it was too bumpy. Next time!
Nice flight. Rad transition at the end in the hangar 🤙
Thanks. My dude Doyle worked on this episode and he was quite hyped on that composite.
Great Video. Thanks for sharing the "mistake" about PUPDG. We all learn from our mistakes...and we can learn from other's mistakes also. Thanks! Happy Flying!
Thanks! Yea when I got home I rebuilt the route and added T441 into the flight plan and it forced PUPDG. So I need to get in the habit of adding the route when intending to fly the route.
Nice video! On a serious note, you may want to think about taking smaller bites of food when flying alone, especially in IMC. I almost choked on a sandwich flying once. Luckily a sip of my drink saved the day! 😰 Something I consider now when I’m by myself or the only pilot onboard.
My thoughts exactly!! I am always leery of eating while flying alone.
That’s actually a really good point. I always super tighten my belts when going IMC because I don’t wanna get knocked out. I never considered choking (or any other incapacitation) really other than Carbon Monoxide. I’ll keep that in mind for sure.
great video, man. I love seeing tigers in the air (i'm in annual now). what was leaking out of the engine compartment there at #15:02? not oil, surely.
It’s just old oil and engine gunk that gets blasted out when I fly in a heavy rain.
that is a really cool plane, but personally I would like to have a less modern looking plane but that’s just my preference
Thank you for talking about the T route vs V routes I am working on getting my rating. I really enjoyed the video.
Thanks! Yea T routes don’t get enough love.
where can I look to purchase one?
Searey (Progressive Aerodyne) is currently closed. So used is the only option, or an existing un-built kit.
Enjoyed this! Looking forward to more.
Thanks!
Great Video!!
Thanks!
Мечта🤘🎸💪🌴😀🌙
Yeah when I want to join a T or V route I actually add the route into the flight plan. And then it requires that I pick a waypoint that's on the airway. If I don't, the route will turn red in the flight plan. Maybe a way to prevent the problem that you had might be to add the T441 route to the flight plan. It'll auto pick a starting and ending waypoint for you, which you can then adjust to more fit what you're trying to do. I'm glad your posting IFR videos again. I don't have my SES certificate so a little hard to relate. But I do have my instrument rating and I enjoy watching those videos. In this video I really liked how you were able to easily communicate your intentions to ATC and get a resolution.
Thanks! Yea that's a good tip. Honestly I rarely fly airways. Only in the mountains like this example. Usually I just file for 9-11k and go direct, but that wasn't an option here. It's easy to forget about them sometimes... Yea. I didn't even know how to explain it so I just went plain English and it was all fine. I really didn't want to fall into the trap of "he told me to climb 9k, I should just do it" when I knew the freezing level was 10k, and that was an additional risk when I didn't think I needed to take it.
Add to the fact that he doesn’t have FIKI. That also adds an additional caution layer to the whole flight.
Man nobody has FIKI. The single engine piston FIKI availability is basically 4 Mooney Bravos, 13 Ovations, a few 210’s that are all now 350-400k with corroded spars and the SR22. I’ve been trying to buy a FIKI aircraft since legitimately 2019. It’s a tough market.
@@thecommercialpilot I have an SR22 with FIKI. So that has changed my decision making a little. Not crazy much but if I have to descend through it or climb above it, depending how thick the layer, it allows me to make the flight.
@@mikecournoyernice. Yea I’m pretty much IMC grounded from late Oct to April. I’ve done some combo VFR til I’m a bit south then IFR when the freezing level raises, but it’s tough.
@@thecommercialpilot Where do you live? That sucks.. lol. I used to have a Cherokee 6 so I get that. I just flew from RI to Savannah the other day. OAT was 35 and I was in solid IMC for over an hour. No icing though.
@@mikecournoyerWest Michigan. Pretty icy place some times.
Awesome video! Great information about the differences in routes, I’m currently working on my IFR out of BIV and hoping to have it done by the end of May. Thanks again for the great content!
BIV heck yeah. Keep it up!
You do that gear position check visually by looking at your wheels over your shoulder, right?
Yea you can see me do it. Gotta make sure those things are where you think they are.
ай кен флай💪🎸🤘блть
How do you only have 1.5k subs? This is so good
Thanks! I don’t post a ton…. But I’ve got a few more coming soon.
One of my favorite parts of GA - rental car at the field, out to the plane, load up, and away we go…😉
It’s amazing! Sometimes they even put the red carpet out for me. Haha. Sometimes….
Given the slight distance, wouldn’t they just let you change your flight plan, from SOT to PUPDG, so you could slide into T441 at the lower altitude, since you have GPS and need to avoid the possible icing? Odds are it was t terribly busy there at the time? (edit: Disregard, I see that’s exactly what happened next)
Yea. That was what was confusing at first. I was basically already going to PUPDG. Tango and Victor route widths 4NM and PUPDG is only 3,000ft away from SOT which is where I had filed for. I was within the margin even.
That’s a flat-out money point you make about the VOR vs GPS point and reception. It’s easy to think “close enough” and in two dimensions, especially when you’re just following a line. Most people wouldn’t think to calculate a different min altitude as a result.
Yea. I thought I WAS on the route. I was like… “what are you guys talking about?!”
Working on my IR. Good lesson to pass on. Thanks.
Keep it up. Was my hardest rating but also my most useful and very rewarding.
Good looking bird ! I did my PPL a few years ago in a 75 Grumman cheetah, such fun planes to fly! More fun than the high wings in my opinion
Best fun!
Great flight! I can totally see how the confusion on the GPS route can happen. Good learning.
Thanks! 👍
this is actually so cool! Good job!
How much did your Grumman cost? I’m a private pilot training for commercial via part 141. I would love to own a Grumman in the future! Love the videos!
I paid about 60k back in 2016. Basically free nowadays.
@@thecommercialpilot thank you!
I saw one online for $165K, that’s a big difference.
Huge price difference between 2016 and 2024. Covid greatly increased demand (who wanted to fly commercial?) and prices shot up like crazy. And now new pilot training is extremely strong so demand seems like it will keep going up. This has actually caused a shortage of mechanics so maintenance, repairs and inspections are more expensive now as well. But there's nothing like owning your own plane. No more scheduling issues and more familiarity with the systems are just the beginning. I have a lot of hours in a Cheetah and loved it but have something heavier and faster now as it's basically a business tool.
Really interesting and excellent ownership report. I’m flabbergast by the insurance cost, even knowing how much aviation insurance has jacked up recently. Did I hear you saying “conditional inspection” repeatedly? The regs refer to “condition inspection”. It s not “conditional,” you must do the inspection whether it “passes” or not. Hope to hear more about you Searey adventures.
Yea, it's condition. Not conditional. I misspoke.
Thanks Matt :-) I really enjoyed learning about your experience flying on top. In my country, Norway, the CAA has allowed ultra light aircrafts to proceed vfr-on-top, with just minimal equipment, and training required. I mean, its great fun to stay on top at max 4/8 coverage. Its a gamechanger when suddenly clouds are 6/8 and running on fumes.... So, I think its going to be very intersting how this will proceed in he future. If you dont mind, I will use this video as a great instructional tool for my students to see and learn what to expect up there on top. Tnx Matt..
Are you the one who landed in the lubbers cup race last weekend?
Nope!
@@thecommercialpilot I am shocked no one has uploaded video of it yet
VFR on top may be legal but that don't make it smart.
I do that when I do my rescue boat shifts as I have nothing better to do but (I know this is totally unrelated) it’s even better in a sailing boat XD
Great video. Can you fish from the plane?
Yea I don’t see why not. I’d love to give it a try someday
@@thecommercialpilot My question is do the doors open in such away so that you can cast a rod?
