Hello! My name is Colin, or Key, I've just started recording some videos in the free time I have in grad school! I've been playing video games for most of my life, but I tend to stick to more story-heavy or action RPG's (The Witcher, Divinity, Assassin's Creed), I also love RTS games (Total War, Civilization, Age of Empires), and I do enjoy sitting back and playing several shooters as well (Apex, Halo, Battlefield). I look forward to putting out more content soon

Coming right out of the gate with all that positive energy was something the world needed, great video :)
Thank you so much. I appreciate it man! You always put positive energy out there bro.
What subject do you teach? I'm a GRA/GTA in computer science at UTK. I've tried to help some students with the same thing. I battle with it too. Great video!
I really appreciate it! Hey dude, that's really impressive being a comp sci grad student! I'm in the behavioral neuroscience/classical research psychology section of psychology and I teach sense and perception and behavioral neuro classes. Thank you on behalf of your students for helping them through this. You got this too, brother. It's a tough road but I guarantee you'll be so blown away how far you've come in just a few years. You are going to do some great things. I have an untested theory that the people who feel this way are ultra high achievers and are the ones who can put out the best work. Thank you for your comment!
Hey good video! The CZcams algorithm brought me here and I'm glad it did. You're doing an incredible job of talking while gaming, it's pretty impressive. That being said, I think the mix of commentary while playing makes it harder for you to get to the point and not forget ideas nor go in random direction. I think it would be better if you talked over a pre-recorded gameplay instead of playing while talking, but don't let me tell you what to do, if you like it that way its awesome :) There's definetly a niche for honest/simple commentary (ex: Sam Sulek, Niko (Mincraft youtuber), and more). You're commentary on imposter syndrome was really interesting and I'm sure it'll reach many people!
It was very difficult talking about stuff that wasn't the game while gaming for sure! I think you're definitely right; it's funny because one of my best friends helping me with this told me the same thing. I really appreciate the advice and the comment! I think I might mix live talking and for important topics (like the imposter syndrome) talk over prerecorded gameplay. I love Sam Sulek! That's kind of the direction I'm trying to shoot for. Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a great day!
College is a waste of money if you have your own vision of a business only you know about and know everything about just saying i dont know who needed to read this but its true
Honestly, unless you're going for really advanced degrees, I believe that apprenticeship models are so much better for learning skills that you actually need.
Very unexpected video but found this talk quite enlightening and intersting good job:)
I'm really glad to hear that dude! Have a great day!
Enjoyed the video a lot keep it up! I like how you did the video, as someone that struggles with some negative thinking patterns this was nice to listen to, people don't talk about things like this enough!
I'm really glad to hear that you found it nice to listen to. Negative thoughts are really hard to deal with and they creep up all the time but you got this. I believe in you!
@@KeyPhD thankyou !! At the end of the day we are all in this together although sometimes it might not feel like it !
I couldn't have said it better myself. I think it's always good to keep that in mind. Thank you for reminding me of that
I tell my myself no one loves me and that i am a waste of a human being but bruh im doing just fine lmaoo yall are just wimpy cry babys lmao i tell myself i deserve to die yet here i am lmao
I studied neuroscience in undergrad for a couple years myself, and I have some issues with points you've made, specifically about muscle memory. You should understand that the 'fast flicks' you said you should avoid doing, are a fundamentally different movement physically compared to the slow and controlled movement you are arguing for. This is because you will be recruiting more fast twitch muscle fibers / more force is required in general to accelerate the mouse the faster - this is just a completely different muscle activation pattern. That is not to say that there is no positive transfer between the two movements, but at the core of it, if you want to be able to do both movements you will have to practice both. I think the primary issue here is the use of the word 'memory' in literature. This is a terrible word that insinuates our brain building a sort of look-up table/spreadsheet for how to do a range of movements. In the case of fps aiming, this would be like saying, the brain looks at the x and y coordinate distances your crosshair needs to move to get onto the desired target, and then opens up your 'procedural memory spreadsheet' and finds the muscle activation pattern it has associated with the moving your crosshair by that x,y distance. While this may actually be the case, there is no literature to support this kind of mechanism. Given the fact that theres no actual evidence of this, it's strange to assume it to be true because it's such a stupid and inneficient solution to the problem, just in terms of space and algorithmic complexity. We should probably expect evolution to find that building a heuristic function with certain inputs is much more energy efficient. This shouldn't be unrealistic since neural networks are already function approximators, and we know that motor learning occurs through a kind of reinforcement learning. Here is where I think I agree with you: the reason you believe slower movements are better for practice, is that you believe there to be a higher bandwidth of training signal. Rather than flick that results in a yes/no 'did you hit the target or not' - 1 single bit of feedback - with a slower movement, you are receiving a constant stream of information and feedback throughout the movement, that gives you a higher bandwidth of training signal. However, I will argue that, the majority of the signal here, is actually training not your motor ability, but the part of your dorsal pathway responsible for understanding where objects are oriented in space. What I'm basically saying is that you literally have no reason to assume you 'know' where the objects on your screen are actually located. Just because you can see them on the screen doesn't exactly tell you everything. Your brain needs to learn how to translate distances on the screen to distances in physical space (mouse movements). If you can't complete this step effectively, it doesn't matter how much motor skill you have you're never going to reliably hit the target. This goes in the other direction as well.
I appreciate the comment. I've been preparing my dissertation proposal, which is why it has taken me a bit to respond. So I'll address the things you said: There are muscle fibers that are a mix of type 1 and 2 so it could be logical training this way. Although, to my knowledge, there is no research in extremely small movements about transfer. Most of the type 1 vs 2 muscle fiber stuff that I've seen is related to hypertrophic muscular/endurance training. Slowing down these movements, much like practicing guitar, however, does allow one to see where they are going wrong, are they overflicking, are they underflicking, is their flick way off target. It's better to have intentional, corrective training (which is shown in the literature as far back as 1927) than banging your head against a wall to change activation from type 1 or type 2 muscle fibers, which again hasn't been shown in the literature with mouse movements. It makes sense that type 2 is being used, though. Further, you are also trying to induce neural change in the motor cortex, which takes a considerable amount of time. It is better to take things slowly, pushing yourself in terms of speed but still trying to maintain accuracy, to ensure that these cortical changes are properly communicative between the superior colliculus, the dorsal and ventral pathways, and the motor pathway itself. So you say that memory is a bad definition but then you refer to procedural memory. Which is the name of learned motor movements such as gaming, riding a bike, or learning to play an instrument. It is well known that there is a difference between procedural and declarative memory, such as the cases of Clive Wearing and H.M. show. However, procedural memory is memory nonetheless. I am unfamiliar with literature saying there is a procedural memory spreadsheet, but it follows that there are a a set of processes that build up as one develops expertise that your brain calls upon when you need that expertise, which you can find tons of literature on. For example, in *1980* Cohen and Squire talked about how memory is preserved in amnesiac patients in tasks requiring them to read words reversed in a mirror, even though they didn't think they knew the word, they still could pronounce it and know that it is a word. I'm only focusing on the skill learning aspect of the procedural memory pathways, but this is how your body "remembers" how to do things such as playing guitar, riding a bike, etc. For a review, (I'm hoping this is an open science pub) here is a link: wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/wcs.49?casa_token=LVFHLhemVBoAAAAA%3AjbAjvgR32ymOqxKxsTzGN0TnmgzUmZh0Ntk7WM7S9Me0cVd5I_6jU_m80iZDUURWscq-h9uK5RqetVs You are somewhat incorrect in your procedural memory point. There are proprioceptive, somatosensory, and haptic feedback loops that can inform the brain where the body is in space. Take someone who has never used a mouse before in a FPS style game. They have no idea how far moving their mouse X centimeters is compared to visual angle change on the screen. You have to build up these feedback loops so you can be more aware of your body in space and how that relates to the screen. It is honestly surprising how little movement you need to flick from target to target. Trying to bullet your way from target to target haphazardly teaches you nothing. I may have been a bit heavy handed in my word choice in the video, I can't remember exactly how I phrased it. However, I think slowing down a bit (but not so much so that you're basically not training) to recognize your mistakes is important. It's the way they've taught instruments forever. It helps build up these different pathways, and, especially since gaming is so visually intensive, you need to get used to where to look, how the screen moves as you move the mouse, etc. You are training your motor ability whenever you are performing motor tasks. I agree that it is training vision, since this is probably one of the most extreme visuo-motor tasks in human history, you do need to build up these visuomotor connections within the dorsal, ventral, and superior colliculi connections. I would argue that you do know where objects are located in space. Most likely through the different types of depth perception. I would liken it to driving. You know how far the car in front of you is and if you need to press the gas or breaks depending on the size of the visual angle (a Gibsonian/Lee type of vision). This is due to your eyes and brain communicating and say where "you" (i.e., your car) is in relation to the other things on the road. With PC gaming instead of your legs pressing pedals, it is your hand moving a center point in response to visual angles. I'm unsure of your last point because it does seem like you acknowledge that the brain "knows" where objects are located in space, but you just have to learn what the correct (i.e., flicking and hitting or tracking the target) response is. Which I believe is best done by going a bit slower, focusing on accuracy and increasing speed much like learning an instrument. Again, I really appreciate your comment and I'm really happy that you're willing to call people out and have them explain their reasonings. There needs to be more of that. If we had more critical thinkers like you, I think we as a society could get a lot done!
Voss silver sword is better, simply go to the gothyanki patrol at the mountain pass, save, use command drop on him, it will take many reloads but eventually his sword will drop and he will teleport out with the dragon, then dispose of the other githyanki and pick up the sword, there will also be solid gear dropped by the unnamed githyanki
Call of duty is far from saving. You forget that Activision is largely the reason that all of these low effort, microtransaction riddled, completely incompetent titles being pumped from the AAA waste plant are being made in the first place. Activision hasn't listened to their fans since Ghosts, and im almost certain that as long as Bobby Kotick continues to be in the CEO chair, then Activision will never listen. Also, MW2019 is also largely the reason MWII is in the state that it's in right now. It promoted so much incompetence in the devs, note how every release after 2019 was more and more unfinished, even more than the last. We as a community, for supporting the direction activision was going are also largely to blame. It will be a miracle if Activision pulls themselves together, but until i see words being put into action, as we all should, then i want nothing else to do with the absolute dumpster fire of a game and a community known as Call of Duty
I’m feeling mostly the same way. I’m really jaded with my ideas about these games because you’re right; they keep just shoveling crap to us and telling us it’s diamonds. I really hope that The Finals and XDefiant really pop off because then there is some competition in that niche of FPS’s so that CoD will finally start being something the devs and execs put their heart and soul into again. I’m hoping the Microsoft (as ironic as this is) merger will actually start having Acti-Blizz making good games again, I have my doubts, though. Maybe MW3 can prove us wrong but I’m not so sure it will. Thanks for watching man and thank you for such an in-depth comment!!
I dont even play Call of Duty anymore but I totally agree. Loving BG3 right now. Another great example would be Squad. Theyre implimenting some pretty big changes to how their combat infantry works. Theyve since done atleast 4 playtests implementing the features, listening to player feedback and changing things ever so slightly, to get it just right. I dont think Call of Duty can ever go back though. As long as they are as big as they are, they'll always fear one thing: irrelevance. Their need to constantly produce new things, outweighs the love and passion that that one dev might have for it. All good things must die someday. Great video btw, you got my sub, sorry for the mini essay. ✌🏻
Same! I'm cautiously optimistic about MW3 (pt. 2) but I don't think I've played CoD since sometime in the spring. I love BG3 as well! It is such a well-polished game. I've seen the stuff about Squad! I really want to try it at some point. I think I might check it out sooner rather than later (although BG3 is making that difficult!). I'm hoping CoD could back but I'm afraid you are right. No worries man I respond with mini-essays all the time! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for the comment!
@gardnergamesphd Yeah I'll probably end up getting MW3 anyway. I find myself buying CoD for the campaign mostly and some multiplayer before people get too sweaty. I can't keep up with these kids these days lol and I'm only 27. And as far as Squad goes, they do free weekends all the time!
Haha I’ll be right there with ya man. I’ll probably buy it too. I feel that. I’m 26 and I don’t know how the kids move so quickly! Sweet man!! I’ll check that out on a free weekend, thank you!

You’re right! It’s Hunt: Showdown!
What I'd like to see ...a deeper dive into how our eye-focus makes a difference. Think about how FBI trains the 1000-yard vision to shoot, are you focusing on crosshair or tracking target, or both back and forth? See, there is a subtle neuromechanic there and that's what I'm working on getting enough research to tie instinct-aim and real-life shooting to FPS...I believe there is a link, but it's super hard to find solid data on it....
That’s actually really interesting. Hmm so visual training but specifically for aiming? Off the top of my head, I’m not sure how much data there is for specifically improving aim, but I know I’ve read things on improving visual abilities for different tasks. The answers might lay in that literature. I’ll look into it and make a video if I find anything! Thank you so much for the comment man!
