Nice work! Level 4 isn’t too bad, but level 5 definitely can be pretty tricky and you handled it really well. Yellow invades pretty quickly there and you made pretty good use of quickly getting up towers to hold them off. Getting rid of orange so quickly also helped a ton! Congrats! It seems like you’re getting the hang of beyond now. While there are definitely challenges in the rest of the campaign that can be tough to learn, I don’t think there’s anything in the human campaign that’s substantially more difficult than level 3, so the toughest part of the learning curve should be behind you.
Yeah 4 was boring in terms of what happened. I lost in 5 my first attempt because I didn't get towers fast enough but I pretty much treat every level as "first attempt to scout, second attempt to win, hopefully" at this point. I'm glad to hear the rest of the levels shouldn't be too bad, but I'm sure I'll do something to make them harder lol
@@LaBarBQ haha I’m sure you will. A lot of levels have reasonably tricky or open ended starting positions, so there probably will be several resets as you figure out what to do early.
Nice job figuring out this level. Honestly I think it’s one of the most difficult levels in this entire campaign. Your starting gold mine is just so tiny, orange gets so insane if you don’t deal with them quickly, and resources are at a premium here. If you find yourself in a situation without a ton of resources, mages with blizzard are actually a pretty good way to get a lot of value from a few units. They’re tough to use but extremely strong, good at destroying towers and dealing massive damage to charging enemies, so you can get really efficient if you use them well. Red does eventually attack regardless of whether you build a shipyard, but sometimes their ai can get confused when you take out orange quickly. I’m pretty sure that transport in the back of their base was trying to attack your town hall in oranges base, and just couldn’t pathfind around the islands, so it got stuck. That happened to me a couple times too in my challenge runs lol. As for other useful things you could do, holy vision is actually a good spell that I haven’t seen you use. It reveals a ton of the map, so even if you don’t feel like sacrificing a couple flying machines, you can reveal the entire map with a couple of paladins as soon as you get them for free pretty much, which just generally helps. Learning the levels really is everything here, once you know what’s coming they get easier.
There are a lot of mage spells that I hesitate to use because I can usually barely handle telling troops to basic attack lol. I do need to use blizzard though. Holy vision is a good idea. I'm usually a little panicked by the time I'm making paladins and forget they have anything other than heal lol. Also that poor ship. The pathfinding just amazes me because one second a dragon is bypassing all defenses to hit my base and the next a ship is, well, doing whatever that was lol
@@LaBarBQ mages have a lot of spells, but not all of the spells are equally useful :D. Blizzard is the best spell, it’s just a ton of damage on ridiculous range in a giant area for a long time, it’s basically just a better ballista once you have tech. The ai doesn’t play around it either, they’ll just suicide charge everything at your mage through your blizzard and take even more damage because of it. Polymorph is also just hilarious fun, you don’t need it to defeat dragons, but it’s always fun zapping them in to sheep. The other spells are pretty meh in comparison (or at least much harder to use effectively) and I pretty much never use them, but blizzard by itself makes mages op. I honestly don’t know if this game even has dragon pathing on some of the levels. Like, sometimes the dragons move via logic and will attack certain areas, but in other levels I’m convinced it’s completely random. Don’t cite this as a fact, I don’t know for sure if that’s true, but that’s certainly what it feels like, with dragons just popping up in the most random places lol.
I wouldn't be surprised if none of the movement is coded properly. Troops are whacky, ships are whacky. But noted on the mage stuff, I need to play with it a little. Should make things interesting.@@redwings13400
Nice job figuring out this level! It's a pretty tough one, a good example of what a typical beyond level is like. There's nothing incredibly fancy here, just lots of enemies with varied compositions thrown at you pretty quickly. Thanks for the shout out, I'm happy my videos were able to teach you something! :D It looks like you learned the same lesson I did when I did my footmen only run, and that's the power of just getting a bunch of early footmen. While footmen do have their weaknesses, especially when attacking in to walls, I actually found myself struggling a lot less than normal in the early game in that run. Early footmen and guard towers is honestly a pretty fantastic defensive setup that also leaves you room for early aggression if you need it, which you discovered here.
I'm starting to realize I need to focus on meeting objectives vs clearing the map. It's been a hard lesson to learn because I just want to raze everything to the ground lol Yeah remembering the footmen strat came in handy. I have a hard time keeping up but the levels get way too long without the game speed being up. It's a hard thing to balance right now.
Alleria is perhaps the most OP hero of the game, definitely from the alliance side. She has the range of a ballista, the rate of fire of an archer, extra damage, health, and more. I watched another WC2 playthrough and we started calling her the 'Turtle sniper' as she was sinking giant turtles left, right, and center. Looking forward to this campaign!
I hate turtles so hearing that she is the 'Turtle Sniper' makes me just a little happy lol.
Not to bring up other youtubers and streamers, however... While it's true that you can't save Lord Lothar, you CAN save the 3 knights of his retinue. Someone did a full on deathless run of Warcraft 2. The ONLY 'casualties' that were suffered - and it's become a meme in his community - were a single critter in each campaign and (in the orc campaign) a mission where you MUST use goblin sappers. Beyond that, he did achieve a deathless run, at least for both Alliance campaigns and the Horde's expansion campaign. Totally fair to say, though, that the effort he put in for saving those 3 knights was NOT worth it. Also, IIRC the food cap was like 250. I pushed the limit as a kid, but never got close to that figure (I did break the 100 mark) due to enemy attacks.
always welcome to note other streamers/youtubers here. I like to check related content out in case I get stuck, which I had to do quite a bit playing wc2. Don't remember this game being difficult but also child me was a cheater. I have watched a deathless run so might be the same person. I was perplexed as I struggle to beat the game playing normally lol. Poor Lothar though.
You know it's nuts when the prisoners are making a suicide run to escape and defend their objective! Wow!!!
3:40 "Oh hey, it's a catapult. Neat" ... "OH NO THAT'S A CATAPULT!" I've never seen anyone miss danath before, that's hilarious! You actually came pretty close to beating it without him, because the way the trigger works in this level is actually just checking for three different red units to enter the circle of power, which means the balista and peasants would actually activate the win condition too! 99% of the time this is irrelevant, but it's a bit of fun trivia of how jank this game really can be sometimes :D Heroes are a cool addition to this game, while Tides played around with the concept a little, Beyond takes it a step further and makes them pretty crucial parts of the mission. They work far better in the human campaign than in the orc campaign, since you get more heroes in the human campaign, and healing makes them actually usable throughout the entire mission rather than just at the start. In the orc campaign, you primarily play around with a death knight hero who's honestly more of a liability than an asset, since enemy paladins will use exorcism to nuke him out of existence if you try to use him at all (or just don't hide him well enough), but in the human campaign, the heroes are honestly extremely useful units that can slay massive hoardes of orcs from themselves, especially early on. Heroes aren't invincible though, and on most missions losing one is a failstate, so make sure to keep them protected. High burst damage units like catapults and death knights are pretty terrifying, so I tend to use them primarily as defenders, while holding them back a bit in the late game. One unfortunate thing I will mention here is that saving and reloading saves can completely and utterly break this game. I didn't know this for a very long time, but it basically messes with the AI's scripts in the weirdest ways, making them do things like forget to harvest lumber, making the AI completely forget to build units, or making them forget to tech up. I'm not saying this to tell you to stop saving in general, because even with saving the campaign isn't trivial by any means, just to make you aware that the AI will do weird things if you do, and that could make the campaign much easier in ways the devs didn't intend.
Glad I could miss daneth for you😂 Whole time I was thinking "isn't there supposed to be someone else?" I didn't know that about the 3 red units being enough for victory though. It's interesting that they have a check for 3 red units but also checks for if specific heroes are alive. Blizzard has always been a mess though hasn't it lol. A beautiful mess. I did know about the save bug thing. Actually just learned it recently from watching your videos lol. I have saved in some of the levels but haven't yet had to load them. With that in mind, I'll probably try to do it the correct way unless I'm struggle bussing real bad, then we save scum for the win. I'll have no shame! Edit: okay I just rewatches the catapult thing and I'm pretty sure I was thinking " lol the game broke this guy just wants to be friends" and by the time my brain registered I was supposed to kill it, an awkward amount of time later, I had been hit with a fireball of death. Good times.
Congrats on beating this level! It's a hard one, by far the hardest level in Tides of Darkness. I probably looked up a guide the first time I beat it too, honestly. I remember as a kid, this was the one level in tides I could never beat, dragons just swarm so early and the death knights are so devastating when you don't have much to counter them. "As we get some easier levels in the next expansion I'm hoping..." Uhhhhhhh.... So.... quick warning... Beyond the Dark Portal is HARD. Tides of Darkness is meant to teach the game, in Beyond the devs assume you know how to play, and throw you in to the deep end right away. It's definitely doable, but it will probably require a lot of trial and error. I absolutely love Beyond the Dark Portal and consider it a great campaign, but just... yeah, there's a pretty massive difficulty jump between Tides and Beyond, so be ready for that. Pretty much every level in Beyond is on or above this level's difficulty.
Yeahhh I've only done the first level so far in BDP. I can already tell it's gonna beat me down, but I beat elden ring and bloodborne. How bad can this be? Right?! Right!?! But yeah I'm also trying to challenge myself a little bit and keep the game speed up. The game is definitely more fun to me with it up, but it is much much more difficult.
@@LaBarBQ haha. Rts definitely requires a different set of skills than the other games there do, though the experience of beating your head against a wall repeatedly will definitely help. Beyond is an interesting campaign because it’s a rare case where the ai actually plays fairly, they mine all their gold and lumber from the map. This rewards aggressive play because if you don’t expand and take contested gold mines, the ai will, then they will use all that gold against you. This doesn’t apply to every level, but there are a lot of places where you can make levels a lot easier by making heavy use of your starting army or by attacking early, either to free up supply for a better economy, or just outright destroying enemy bases that don’t start out with a ton but build up quickly. It’s definitely a tactical puzzle. You can win by playing defensively too, but sometimes that’s actually much tougher than by attacking, and I think that’s relatively rare for rts campaigns to accomplish.
@@redwings13400 Missed this comment, but thanks for the tip. I still only did the first level so far. Caught between wanting to space out recording to make sure I can get feedback and thinking I won't be able to win in a week lmao.
Haha honestly I doubt you'll be able to win in a week. You could do orc tides in a week, that campaign would probably feel pretty simple for you since there's nothing in orc tides that's nearly as bad as the last human level in tides. Beyond is a different story though, Beyond will take some time for you I think.@@LaBarBQ
@@redwings13400 I just meant one level a week in the BDP campaign, not the whole thing. I definitely can't beat the whole campaign in a week, not without some serious grinding anyway. My problem for beating a single level is that I only have a few hours each day to do 1 of many things, as is the case for most of us. So if I get caught spending 3 hours on a level and fail, I've gotta find time to attempt it again throughout the week which isn't always easy to do for me. I am determined to beat BDP though at least.
47:17 Yeah that's just gryphons for you. They just have ridiculously long reaction times so microing them feels way more frustrating than microing any unit in the game. They aren't bad units necessarily because so many things in this game can't shoot up, but they are painful to control and don't have great stats for their cost. Watching this, I'm going to guess that on a couple of other attempts of this mission, you got overwhelmed by dragons, so you reacted by training a ton of destroyers alongside a ton of gryphons, archers, and guard towers. However, the only dragon roost on the mission is actually in the central island you cleared out early. So you actually destroyed all dragon production super early and never had to deal with them lol!
so I just looked back at my fail recording and I seemingly had trouble constantly being raided by red and orange in the first attempt and inevitably ran out of resources before I could win. In the second attempt, I tried to blitz the dragon roost island and got overrun by a turtle sub, and then was just frustrated so I gave up for the night. That and I was sick so my patience was very very low when attempting to play that level lol. Admittedly I did not play the best tactically either way and opted to just take it slow and be super cautious.
Neat :) You didn't need it in your final attempt, because you had a ton of gold left over when you won, but there is actually one more gold mine on the map in the fog of war that you didn't see in this attempt! It's in the bottom right corner on red's island. I feel like the challenge of this level is really the start, since the AI attacks way more aggressively here than they do at any point previously in the campaign, so if you are used to just getting a ton of economy and upgrades early without training an army, it's very easy to get overwhelmed. Bloodlusted ogres are pretty terrifying, and it's easy to not have enough to defend against them, especially early on. @@LaBarBQ
Bloodlust ogres are ridiculous. But man missing gold mines just so happens to be my specialty lol. I realize I need to work on finding an extra gold mine ASAP and mining as much as possible. For some reason I thought this game had an army cap like wc3.
You’re feeding my nostalgia trip for the night.
Glad I can help. I remember myself being much better, but then I realized I probably cheated as a kid lol
I was awful I just used cheat codes all the time. I had no tactical wherewithal.
You're not alone, but if you want to see some crazy warcraft 2 play, check out Stu. I watch his vids for strategy because he did some crazy stuff imo.
I like your added note in the description that you didn't apply all the info yet.
I knew you'd be coming for me🤣 Unfortunately by the time you gave me all the advice, this video and the next were already recorded. So you'll get to see me attempt some of it on the last mission for the campaign.
@@LaBarBQThe last human mission is a pretty severe difficulty spike on the rest of the campaign (it's much harder than anything in the orc Tides campaign too), so don't be too surprised if you struggle there. It's definitely an interesting mission, you will learn to hate dragons by the end of it.
I actually just beat that mission last night but you are correct. I hate dragons. The first night I spent a couple hours trying the level and could barely establish a base. I ended up watching some videos by Stu, who is clearly a god at warcraft 2, and used his tactic to finally beat the level. Not gonna lie, after the first night I was a little worried I wouldn't beat it lol@@redwings13400
@@LaBarBQ congrats! Yeah, that level is actually just tough. It’s by far the hardest thing you’ll encounter until the beyond campaign, where the levels really get consistently brutal. I’ve seen Stu’s videos, and yeah, his micro is completely absurd. Honestly his videos look as ridiculous to me as they do to you, he just does things and his units don’t take damage. Its pretty ridiculous
Okay so just stumbled onto your videos while I was watching Stu again and geez. I'm struggling to play normally and you're over there beating the game with just archers! 😂 Kudos to you. I need to put on my 'git gud' hat for the next set of levels.
Four minutes in to the video. My reaction, which I’m guessing you know now by the description, “oh no! He doesn’t know that flying machines can see submarines! Oh man that makes the mission so much harder! Uh oh…”
*sigh* ya know I used to think I was good at this game back in the day😂 kinda funny how that memory ignores the fact I for sure used cheats as a kid.
@@LaBarBQ haha. I mean, your skill level hasn’t been the issue for the missions you’ve struggled with in this campaign. You’ve clearly been good enough to beat the levels. You’ve just accidentally imposed a hard mode challenge on yourself due to lack of game knowledge, whether that was not realizing there was an extra gold mine on your starting island, or not knowing you could spot turtles with flying machines. If anything, it’s a credit to your skill that you’ve beaten the levels with these accidental handicaps lol.
It's definitely made things more fun at times, others not so much but I do appreciate the way you think lol. Makes me feel better 😁
Another fire video from one of the best! 🔥🤘
thanks homie! hope you enjoyed the end of the series!
A few points. You're not using hotkeys which would make your controlling of your troops so much easier. Once selected "A" is always for attack, "M" is always for move (both instead of moving the mouse over to the command button). "H" is for heal for your paladins. You might also want to slow down the mouse scroll speed (Idr if you can on WC2 though) so you can more precisely move the screen around. Pretty sure hotkeys for your troops/buildings work in WC2, but idr. Ctrl + top row number should tie the building or group of units to that key. You'll start to remmeber the hotkeys for building buildings and units too; saves a lot of time.
Yoo finally lmao so where are you finding all these hotkeys because I thought they existed but couldn't remember and then never found them. I can't lower scroll speed in game, it's how my mouse is set up, so I should be able to mess with that setting in my Logitech settings. I appreciate the tips thanks you!
The scroll speed isn't for the scroll wheel, its for the movement of the mouse around the screen; how far it moves over the minimap as you push the mouse to the edge of the screen. Again, nothing to do with the scroll wheel, that's just what its called, although idr if you can do that in WC2. The hotkeys appear on the bottom part of the screen when you mouse over a given command. You'll see the letter for the hotkey in orange. Many hotkeys you can also presume and probably be right, if not just double check. They're much more uniform and predictable in SC and SC2 compared to WC2 iirc.@@LaBarBQ
Forgot to mention, the hotkeys for the groups, if you do "Ctrl + 1", then "1" will reference that specific group again. makes it a lot easier to handle a large multi-group army. idr if it works for buildings or groups of buildings in WC2 as well, but might. It can help you navigate building particular units more easily.@@LaBarBQ
this one is very useful and I never knew about it. That was one of my biggest issues trying to command large groups, basically was just controlling 9 and letting the rest die. As for the scroll wheel, I gotcha. I mentioned it in an earlier video I had to turn it down on my PC and then I just didn't. Idk if you played this version of wc2 but it doesn't let you resize the screen nicely so before messing with the mouse wheel I was messing with the file that controls that. Suffice to say it didn't work lol@@nl817
@@LaBarBQ Worth noting, if you look at the bottom of the screen when mousing over a button, like the "Train Archer" button... notice that the "A" in "Archer" is yellow instead of white like the rest of the word. That's how the game communicates the Hotkey for it. B -> Build Basic Structure. F -> Build Farm, just examples.
That was painful to watch. If you had just cleared the main water area, you would've stopped all subsequent attacks/transports on your main base.
Hindsights 20/20. I think by this point I was thinking I didn't have the resources to clear anything that wasnt absolutely necessary. If i didn't miss that gold mine, there's a chance my tactics would have shifted.
That was the most ridiculous ending to this mission I've ever seen. You cut it so close! Also, lol you really did play this mission on hard mode without that gold mine! Congrats on beating it regardless!
Lmao yeahhh. Should put a heart rate monitor on. Who knew a strategy game could get your blood pumping like that. And thanks!
Always take out the CPU's ports, unlike Age of Empires they don't rebuild. Then there is no more ships and transports. You have to defend the home base enough. And Gold is always lacking in Warcraft II. When you attack a tower come at the tower with two ships from an angle where both will hit first, then you may only need 1 more shot. You can always MOVE your ships after an attack to have the enemy miss with timing. There are a lot of strategies for this old game.
oo these are good tips. I didn't realize they'd never rebuild their ports. I'll have to apply this to the last level. I know they also have a bunch of dragons I'll have to deal with too.
Let's go!! Redemption!!
Let's a goo. Just glad to beat it.
glad it did work this time, bud
Thanks, totally did this before you mentioned taking a closer look for gold mines. Missed the one that would've helped a ton.
Blow blue out of the water; it'll stop their incursions. Then you can land in the center and you can use your naval forces to help with the ogres.
That makes sense. I think it took me a bit of time to adjust to the game speed too and aggressiveness of the AI. Ultimately had to turn the speed down a bit.
@AgentFox26 I was going to suggest that too based upon your videos but forgot. The ui is so clunky it's hard to handle that full speed.
yeah, it's a weird balance for game speed because normal speed is 'slow' but any faster and you can't keep up in the later levels. We have gained knowledge though lol@@nl817
The best thing about this is you don't have to kill Blue - just take out his navy. No Navy, no Transports. No Transports, no more Blue Attacks. I mean, unless you _want_ to kill blue. But he's a tough enough nut to crack that after doing so, you just might need to steal what's left of his resources to keep going.
as a little tip, you can take a little closer look about gold mines and oil patches. You should be good with that.
Didn't notice until I beat this mission in the next vid that I missed the gold mine right above my base. It would have helped a ton 😂
@@LaBarBQ Leave no Black Tile unrevealed! Important stuff can be hiding anywhere! Never assume your limits until you have confirmed 100% that there is nothing more available to you.
seemed like a big struggle this time. Was that hard the comps this time, buddy? Good video!
I think the AI aggressiveness ramped up and at max game speed I was caught a little off guard. Thank you for the support it means a lot!
