How I Got Better at Street Photography
im not sure how are people even manage to capture photos of the subjects very close. Sometimes I'm not even close to people, I just stand at one spot taking videos of a popular craft market, or their pets, and immediately i get people saying no photos/what are you doing/why are you taking my picture, and I just gave up
watch in 1.25x speed and thank me later
Yes, Toronto is definitely a 50mm city! :)
What a challenge! I also get stuck in my head. But then I take photos of dogs until I can graduate to people. Please do not watch my video "Photographers are Creeps!" It was not aimed at introverts, but at those who use zoom lenses to shoot pretty girls from afar and call it street photography. It looks at the ethical question of wide angle close up work vs telephoto voyeuristic work. Gilden is my idol. "I HAVE NO ETHiCS!" Thank you for sharing. All who snap are blessed on god's green earth. Subbed
4:48 tu tambien estas ocupado pero consciente en el momento ,los demas estan ocupados en sus mentes, generalmente en el pasado o el futuro, pero no en el presente .
A true love story. Nice vid!
Feels like ill have much fun with my Gr3x HDF arriving tomorrow ❤
Great job!
Just discovered your channel and I'm really captivated by your work. Your perspective on photography and creating is inspiring. Currently building my collection of vintage glass and I'm so excited to experiment with different 28mm lenses!
I'm at a point in my art and photography where I've been really trying to figure out my subject. Something that's always held me back from street photography or taking photos of people is my fear of being judged or even worse confronted for it. I've always struggled with this for as long as I've been taking photos. The thought that I don't really need to "get close" and still be appreciated is a comforting one. I want to take more photos that move me creatively and this video really helped me look at things from a different perspective. Thank you
A small price of 12,000 dollars! What a beautiful camera.
The photographs produced for this video stand with the best.
I’ve been doing street photography for 30 years coming from a commercial photography background. I also love a 28 and a 50 as that’s all I really need, but then I usually carry a 21 and a 90 just to play it safe if I’m traveling. My 28mm is a summilux - I also purchased a 24 mm Elmar as a smaller and lighter option without duplicating another focal length. Yeah, I’m still looking at a 28mm Buogon as a whole different render and close focus. I also live in Hong Kong half the year and it’s a street photographers paradise.
Are you a Virgo?
Clicked on this for HK:PM, stayed for the blind belief
way too late, but why two 28mm lenses?
Thanks Ivan, great video and looking forward to watch more. Glad to see a fellow Torontonian making photos ^_^
I never knew changing lenses was so depressing. Holy sh*t. Great video, though.
Thank you for this gem, not only it's very inspiring, but thought provoking aswell.
what a beautiful film
love your views on photography .... it's great
Seems better than Alex Ng....?
Lightmeters are cheap
You still rocking the m-d 262? Thoughts? I wanttttttt one
What is the music with piano you used please ?
Great video but most importantly very deep messages. ❤
What a beautiful and inspiring video. I adore the feel it left me with.
I love the fact you uploaded a black and white video. I wish more creators would do that!
Everything OK? Long Time without new Videos
Nice Ricoh ad...
Thank you for sharing out loud your thoughts and the journey you are on. I always struggle with the closeness or not closeness. I think too many debates and critiques on 'street' focus on the rule-set rather than the result. All that that critique generates is splits in genre - "that's not really street, it's streetscape, ...", which at the end of the day does nothing that helps. I never look at a landscape and have as my first, dominating thought "oh, it's a landscape". I take a moment to feel if its connects with me or creates a feeling, an emotion. And, looking at your photos, that is exactly what I did - not matter the rule set that generated it, did it make me respond in some way? And, yes, your images did!
that “DLLM” man 😂 very nice work
I've gone from X100V to Q2M to M6 to Q2 to M11. Unfortunately I have chronic GAS
❤
Lovely pace to this production. Well done. I really like the loose but structured 'B-roll' footage too eg 12:45 I've always disliked strict rules in photography - especially the 'not close enough' one talked about here. They'd be better described as 'commonly useful tips', or somesuch. All photographic compositions are about balancing the elements of a scene/story. Sometimes this is best served by having a person filling a lot of the frame, and other times by them being more recessed in the environement. And all points in between. Thanks for the nice video and good photography.
You say the Zeiss Biogon isn't coated. Not true - it has some of the best lens coatings in the industry. You also commented that it it may lack corner sharpness or maybe some fall off. That's because it's not a distagon (not a retrofocus lens). It's a true wide perspective lens and the rear element is much closer to the film/sensor which may result in a bit of fall off in the corners, and with a digital sensor that's not made for it, some softness or distortion. Not an issue with film, and nothing wrong with the lens. Retrofocus lenses use "optical gymnastics" to get around this to make room for a mirror box on an SLR or to project a more straight-on image to a digital sensor. But it usually comes at a cost in size and weight.
Love it !!! Sooo stylish ! Proud of you !!
Ivan that's such an inspiring video, truely loved it! Kinda reflects some feelings I had towards my 28 in favour of a 35mm.
30mm
Such a cool video! Do you mind me asking the name of the metal flower charm that you have on your flash bulb slot at around 14:19?
I've always interpreted Robert Capa's quote as not getting the subject close to the camara, but get yourself closer to the action. For example, Robert always went to wars just to document what was happening, his photos where great not because he was close to the subject, but close to what was happening. Since I understood that I always prioritize the composition of my pictures, and to be present in the moment, to be present in what is happening around me.
Love your style? Would you do a video on color grading and editing? I've been working on my editing skills but I feel like I can't evet get this sort of look you've got going on. Beautiful
One of the best videos about street photography that I saw in long time, really good advice and thoughts about your own process
A revelation indeed.
Sound advice.Many thanks.
The Leica MD262 is the best choice period...!
I have the 28mm and often use the crop to 35mm that works for me.
You are not getting in close because you are scared. There really is no other word for it.
For me the 28mm just dilutes the emotional intensity or sometimes the poetry of a captured frame, compared the 50. It might be a bit more dramatic at times but that requires you to get closer to subjects which is hard to do in many places.
Luv it. The Independent Photography street Photographers Contest: most winning pictures are Layers. I just found my way
