What Titanic's Survivors Thought of the Movies
Most of us nowadays tend to learn about parts of history from movies - it's hard not to get swept up in the excitement of cinema! For some the truth is the opposite - they experience incredible events only to see them represented in hollywood down the line. So it was with Titanic's survivors, with movies coming out about the sinking less than a month after the vessel was lost. In this video we'll explore what Titanic's survivors thought of the various movies made about their experiences. From Dorothy Gibson's 'Saved from the Titanic' of 1912 to 'Titanic' of 1953, 'A Night to Remember' of 1958 and 'Titanic' of 1997.
Thanks to our partners @TitanicHG for their spectacular animations, created by the brilliant Jack Gibson @jackganimations
This video could not have been possible without the exceptional research of two websites; the first, Encyclopedia Titanica which is the absolute go-to source for all information about Titanic’s passengers and crew. You can actually lose a whole day just browsing this site. This video is based on an article originally written and researched by Mike Poirier for the Titanic International Society journal:
Encyclopedia Titanica (2021) Survivors give their impressions of Titanic movies (Titanica!, ref: #578, published 13 October 2021, generated 12th May 2024 12:21:37 AM); URL : www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/survivors-give-their-impressions-of-the-titanic-movies.html
The second is ‘Titanic’s Officers’ which goes into great detail on the story behind Boxhall’s involvement with A Night to Remember, I highly recommend it as it is a fascinating read;

In the 1990s a new and explosive theory emerged, championed by an authour and enthusiast from England. Robin Gardiner proposed that Titanic never really sank at all; that in April 1912 it was actually the ship's sister, Olympic, that sank as part of a plot to cash in on insurance for the beleaguered owner of the liners, the White Star Line. Flash forward to today and the theory has picked up sp...

    6:02 Friends, I’m a little confused by the graphic here, what does the 2 X’s for 9:00am Caronia represent on what I assumed to be a map of the ocean. Not sure what I’m missing, so would be grateful for any help to understand. But otherwise, a stunning recreation of the chilling companion story to the more familiar tale of the doomed Titanic voyage. Top work, sir.

    I think it was Milvena that we interviewed around 1995 in Long Beach California. She was of course a child but one thing that I remember her mentioning was that you could still smell the fresh paint (this was of course before the James Cameron production.) I wish I recalled more but I was in charge of setting up the actual set and lighting and camera operator. There were some Titanic artifacts including a whistle that was salvaged and we blew it with compressed air on camera.

    Mike seemed to represent the 1958 movie A Night To Remember as pretty good. I saw this movie about 45 years ago, and at that time I thought it was good but not that good. Mike caused me to watch it again. It's not that good. There is too much emphasis on the Titanic being supposedly unsinkable - dialog from the owner, the captain, passengers all stating that it can't sink. This unsinkable nonsense arose from newspaper articles tizzed up by second rate journalists. NOBODY in the shipping industry would have believed any ship could be made unsinkable, certainly not the builders and certainly not ship's officers. There are too many obvious bloopers that distract your attention and ruin the intensity of the story. Possibly the movie was badly edited. dining room floors go from level to a 10 degree tilt then back to level again, then back to tilt again in consecutive scenes, then suddenly go to 20 degrees. Some events seem to be out of sequence. A scene showing the Titanic from a distance showing the front going down at about 500 mm per second. That's way WAY too fast. People in lifeboats some distance away from the ship were shown as hearing the band. There was no way that could happen. No amplification back then - the racket of all those people trying to yell their way into the boats would mean they couldn't hear the band either. The movie did not show the ship breaking apart and the stern consequently, having risen up, falling back down then rising up a second time. This is understandable, as it wasn't not conclusively established that that the hull spilt until after the wreck was discovered. Interestingly, when the berg is sighted, the movie has officer of the watch give an order "Full Astern Both" (engines - note that the centre engine was not reversible and would be automatically stopped by an order to reverse both). There has been ongoing differing views as to whether the order was to reverse engines, or was to stop them, including by Ocean Liner Designs - who as I recall thought it was an order to stop. An order to stop both makes absolutely no sense, as the iceberg was too close to stop before hitting it - their only chance was to steer around it. Ordering Stop Both would kill rudder authority and make steering around the berg impossible. Inertia of the ship would simply keep it travelling until it hit the berg head on. We know it almost succeeded in going around the berg. An order to reverse both would not save them, but is understandable as the officer had only a few hours on Titanic and most likely reacted automatically with an order correct for the ship he had last served on - which had no centre turbine. Titanic had only one rudder, so ordering Astern Both would not kill rudder authority but would seriously weaken it.

    It reminds me of when I read that when Sergei Eisenstein's silent movie October was made about the October Revolution in St. Petersburg many of the extras had played a role in the actual event. And that when Clint Eastwood made a movie a few years ago about a train hijacking that had been thwarted by ex-Marines who happened to be on board he didn't cast some actors in the lead roles but the actual guys who had thwarted the train hijacking (which is why it didn't pan out well as none of those guys were actors and playing yourself isn't as dramatic).
