“First you find the shade, then you find the painting” is terrific advice. Survival!! Plus, it’s hard for me to concentrate if I’m terribly annoyed by the great outdoors.

We wear white long into Fall here in California. If it gets cold, we might wear darker heavier linen. Perhaps a parka in December, January.

I am recalling when you took a rail trip with fellow painters like Aimee Erikson and one community was also being revitalized by a focus on art. Very interesting talk. Thank you.

I'm very late to this conversation, but thank you for bringing Shar to my attention. I feel like she has given artists permission to experiment and explore our interior (yet very organic, in my case) landscapes. This one meant a lot to me. Sometimes brushes and a single medium is too limiting. Vine charcoal with acrylic? Yes! Crinkled paper and sweet gum balls? Yes. Mind blown and now open.

Thanks Charlie. I'm working an oil figurative abstract of an homeless camp. I spotted the colors and shapes could make for a good abstract. The shapes of all the various tarps, tents and many unidentifiable items. Then trying to present a greater life feeling rather than the societal ugliness we no of homelessness. Your little abstract gesso studies has helped me keep my mind straight for what I'm after, what I'm trying to discover. The shapes and textures to create a lovely emotion. These are people that don't deserve to be betrayed in all their depressed ugliness. They are lives lived, no different than the indigenous that once made camps across our great land. This talk was very good for me. Thanks very much!

I am so pleased to hear you are happy to just leave the "underpainting" as is. More than a few years ago I started some paintings and was thrilled with the underpainting (sepia effect) and ruined one when adding colour. I then began to do a series of just sepia paintings and they all worked out fine. Some I did on gessoed paper and used the oil a bit like watercolour. Now, when I start a painting like that, it gets suggested that I need to get over it and be more brave and just add the colour. Trouble is, I feel they are finished as they are. Consequently, I am trying to develop a different way of starting each painting, using all the colours from the start. Perhaps, I was doing OK with just the sepias.....? Thank you for enlightening me. I don't watch you often enough and will endeavour to do so more in the future. You are a gem!

I asked the Humane Society for a cat that no one wanted. The lady pointed and said " kona in the corner" the big black cat had been there for over 100 days. I took him home. For the first week he bit me so many times it looked like I un spooled barb wire for a living. When it wasn't biting me, it lived inside my lazy boy.. During the second week his attitude turned around, I always joked that he developed "Stockholm Syndrome" now he's one of the most loyal loving cat's I have ever had. Thank you for reading the story, it reminds me of my cat

I stood at the top of the oldest inhabited village in New Mexico with Bob Boyer as a young art student in 1998 when he said: "when I accepted that there is nothing new under the sun, I decided I could just paint whatever I wanted and stop thinking about it. Let's walk down, I'll buy you a coke." It was a good day, and had a feel to like cutting a leash.

Hey 👋 Beth! While I was involved with PACE24, my wife met you there somewhere, and as soon as I turned on CZcams and Charlie for a squeegee lesson, the wife called out “Hey, that’s Beth from Lancaster!” So, you made a big impression. I’ve watched the whole episode here, and enjoyed hearing your story- I experimented with a squeegee at PACE24 and surprisingly it went well. I also use water mixable oils, so this was a great interview all around!! Thank you both!🎨❤️🎉
