While I'm not entirely sure the subject matter is for me, it's nice to know that there are just genuinely funny and silly movies still being made. :)
Do kids today even know who Garfield is? I remember back in the 90s we had two Garfield phone at our house. You Know, the one that opens and closes its eyes everytime you pick up the receiver. lol. So this us really disappointing to hear. Sounds like clueless studio execs aiming for a quick cash grab.
Just wanted follow up and say that I went to see it a second time. Still really enjoyed it. The action certainly holds up, but I did feel the drag that you noted during the kind of middle section. I don't remember precisely what was going on (and, to be fair, I went in feeling quite tired), but I did feel myself drifting.
Thanks for the follow-up!
Walking out of The Garfield Movie kept you from eating a bad candy cane! That's one thing that went right! (And yes, if Garfield's not being a dick to everyone around him, especially Odie, what's the point?)
Oh gee, the Disney+ documentary makes selling things to Disney sound like the best idea ever XD But I'm glad you enjoyed the documentary despite that sort of nonsense, and The First Omen despite it being a prequel.
Is "Garfield" even for kids at this point? I mean, what kid today is like "Oh yeah, Garfield, my favorite!" I was extremely disappointed in the movie; I took my niece and nephews to it, and I've taken them to a lot of "dumb kids' movies," but this is the only one I ever apologized to them for afterward. Your non-review is spot on, though, if I wasn't there with the aforementioned kids, I would've probably -- well, I probably wouldn't have gone at all, but very early on I was done with the movie. You didn't miss anything worthwhile, unless you really wanted to see a love story about some cows and an inexplicable final act villain who redeems herself in that same act. Sorry for the lengthy comment, I just... "The Secret Life of Pets" movies were better than this, and I thought those were not good.
Stocking up on candy canes then eating them during movies throughout the year is impossibly cute lmao. And I think it's fitting that the one you brought to the Garfield movie went in the trash.
"Prequels don't work." Oh, thank Dog! I feel about 50% less alone today than yesterday. 😸
An interesting study in how accents are fixed in childhood: Sarnoff and Zwyorkin were both born in Russia within 2 years of each other, yet Sarnoff immigrated to New York when he was 9 and sounds like a natural American, while Zwyorkin stayed in Russia until his late twenties and still has a noticeable accent despite his having lived in America for 38 years at the time this film was made.
"And sometimes you get a weird miniseries sequel to a 40s movie, where Timothy Dalton plays a southern plantation owner".
"Erecting" and "probed"? Jeez, Man. What kind of network are you running here?! 😓
*snrk* I wouldn't be surprised if we got a "Homer as Pope" episode one day, given how long the damn show's been running. XD
For some reason I thought you were going to give it a negative, or moderate review. I was scared to watch, especially because I came out of the cinema wanting to go back in and give it a second go! I remember watching Road Warrior as a kid, so these movies have been a love for a long time. I didn't find much disappointment. Except for that stupid end credit decision. What a weird choice! I did, however, like the ending/s to the Furiosa film (Dementus, etc).
This is the rare movie that defeats my misgivings. Miller is brilliant and we’re lucky he’s still making movies!
Now I want to see a full Omen Muppets movie. Like the Happytime Murders, which I thought was a great fun time.
Damnit, when are they gonna get to smell-o-vision?!
I get what you mean about prequels and cinematic universes -- it's hard to find something that can just stand on its own these days! (I mean, fine, my favorite movies are a trilogy -- the Back To The Future films -- but at least the first one can be simply watched and enjoyed if that's your cup of tea!) But I'm glad Furiosa was good enough for you to forgive it being a prequel. :P
BTTF is the best and holds up wonderfully. I’m going to show them to my 12-year-old soon!
Just sat down in the cinema to see this. So, I am def not watching your review until afterwards!
Good take man. Prequel problems indeed. I feel like its fear of recasting the original lead in a new sequel that makes these decisions so hard for Hollywood.
Side note: I still think Zero Theorem was pretty awesome, even if is was WAY too weird for most mainstream audiences to wrap their heads around!
Bruce Jones?! Of Pacific Comics fame?! Viva la Eighties, I always say!!
I was never into those shows either, despite being a child of the 90s (just seeing the covers of Goosebumps books tended to freak me out), so I'll probably give this one a miss. Or just read about it on TV Tropes, as I tend to do. :P
Aww… disappointed to hear many bad reviews of this movie. I was mildly interested in this when I first heard about this but I think I’ll skip. Most reviewers pretty much echo what you just said. 🙁
I feel like this movie might be meant for me as a big 1990s horror watcher (Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps, Eerie Indiana...). I'll have to catch it at some point.
It might be better to rearrange the title to be: Review for the movie "I Saw the TV Glow" 🙂
Oh hey, I've heard of Omega Mart! One of my friends told me about it -- it sounds absolutely wild. And I love that at least some of the weird stuff is actually for sale -- I'd totally buy the inflatable swan-thing.
I mean -- it is doing a VERY good job of making us want to slap the prejudice out of these people, so. . .
i think i might skip the comments for this one.
It's empty.
@@jonathanstern5537 funny thing is CZcams kept saying there was any comment on here besides mine but it didn’t show up and considering the subject matter I’m not sure I want to know what it might have been.
I heard that when Bruce goes to the same church that we do, he pronounces "Amen" like "Ay-men" instead of "Ah-men" like Jesus intended! Send him back where he came from!
I've never gotten into the Apes franchise, so I don't really have any interest in this one myself, no matter how competently made. Though you threw me for a loop when you talked about the original movies having people worship a bomb because -- well. I got into MST3K through reruns on Sci-Fi of the last few seasons, and -- I KNEW Professor Bobo and his whole schtick was a Planet Of The Apes parody, but I didn't realize the "holy bomb" thing was from the actual freaking 60s movies. XD Learn something new every day!
I loved the new Apes movie, but I'm a sucker for the technology behind it, lol. The thing that got me into the Apes universe as a whole was a behind the scenes documentary about the first set of movies.
Dammit, I had no interest in watching this at all, and now I kinda want to watch it.
. . .I had no idea this even existed O.o Then again, we haven't had Netflix in a while, so. . .I guess if we ever sign up for a month or so again we MIGHT check it out? If it's dumb enough to be entertaining, anyway. I know my parents love Jim Gaffigan, so. . .
I'm glad you mentioned the weird way that he has been appropriated (and leaned into?) by the culture war stuff. That has honestly made me shy away from this movie, but maybe I will give it a chance if I am just really really bored and need to watch something that is really odd. Oh crap. Nevermind. I just remembered I don't have Netflix anymore, haha
😆 Drat. I think my spouse just canceled Netflix to save some money. Now I guess I'll never know how I'll take this project since I like Seinfeld's old shows, but I've never liked Pop Tarts. Not even the fancy locavore versions with real fruit and such.
This wasn't like, a top movie for me or anything, but I think people weren't ready for the silly tone of the movie and the way it was going for lots of chuckles and not really big laughs. I finished it, and if I'm bored with a movie I'll abandon it.
That woman who figured out that the hat was a bad buy should next do something about those giant roadkill epaulets she's wearing.
Had fun with this one. Agree that it felt a bit overstuffed and went on a little too long. But the energy and joy behind it kept me engaged. I loved all the little nods to classic stuntwork. The fact that the movie within the movie was called "Metalstorm" and they even used the quote from the 1983 poster art as a line in the movie cracked me up.
I kinda' want to see the frosting-based villain now. I guess this series broke me. :o
*Lambaste* is such an underused word. You know another one? *Fantods.* That one really needs to make a comeback, too.
You know, I rather enjoy dumb popcorn movies full of action, so this one might be one for me to check out. Something that's just plain fun sounds good right now. (And stuntpeople really DO deserve all the respect -- they do a lot of dangerous stuff for our favorite films!)
Aren't you a dad? How do you have the time to see all these movies? After bedtime?
I think I may be suffering from Ryan Gosling fatique. It’s funny that you mentioned Ryan Reynolds because I was just thinking he’s morphing into a Ryan Reynolds type.
It sucks that it seems to be underperforming at the box office, so far.
Hey Josh, longtime FUN WITH SHORTS fan, hope all is well, nice review. 😎
Thanks, man!
So basically if you enjoy goofy gorefests, you'll like this. Good to know!
Loved this movie! Yes, the plot doesn’t bear close examination, but the action and gore is top notch considering the low budget
@2:35 "When the fermented mixture is heated, vapors are given off..." I do believe we have the vapors! @3:18 "...Ethyl alcohol." "Accept no substitutes; ask for it by name!" I mean, yeah. Methyl and isopropyl alcohol are bad news for drinking. You kinda do to want to ask for ethanol by name! Alcohol is converted into rizz -- well *obviously* 😆
Well, glad you got another one that you really really enjoyed! Seems like 2024 has been a little tough in that regard, just from watching your videos. . .
H Jon Benjamin was great as Ben on Dr. Katz as well (that's usually my default for him).
I love how the beginning of this short is basically "this is how you make different kinds of booze," given that I'm certain this is going to turn into an anti-drinking message by the end. :p
Ha ha that aooogah horn
