I am a dog behaviorist and researcher in United States.. Dogs actually understand and are even OK with death,unlike humans. Dogs are NOT OK with abandonment. So with that said..if a dogs owner or someone or even a pet sibling passes on..ALWAYS try to let the dog see,smell the owner or sibling after they passed. If an owner passes away say in the hospital, and all the dog knows is one day his owner walked out the door,,he is still waiting for him to return..and he wont, so the dog actually will.consider this abandonment. Dogs don't understand.and don't like feeling abandoned.. So often dogs will become depressed and anxious.

I hate it when people ask how old is my dog, and I tell them she's 10 years old. Then they will tell me, oh dogs can live till X years old. It's like telling me she only has X years more to go ! You dont go around ask old ppl how old are you ? and then say, oh usually old ppl live till XX years only !!!
