Doing laundry in -25°F. 🤣
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
We're Jordan and Barb, and we bought a hefty chunk of remote mountain forest in Alaska, sight unseen. And we're starting to think we may have made a big mistake. Watch our origin story about our journey from the big city of Columbus, Ohio, to a remote mountain forest where we raced winter to dig through 750 feet of forest to reach our property, followed by a harried and very flawed -25°F build of an enclosure around our RV, and our agonizing fight to survive two brutal winters off-grid with no utilities and frozen tanks. They turned-out to be the harshest winters Alaska has seen in a generation. 20 feet of snowfall led to a broken ridge beam and it broke our spirits. The loss of our kitty to a predator broke our hearts. With only 7 weeks of summer, and failing health, we enter our third winter in Alaska hoping for a milder winter, terrified and battle-weary. How much snow will we get this year? What toll does this winter have in store for us? Will we choose to sell come the Spring?

    I looked up Willow and it said that they get an average of 87 inches of snow so that means that some years they get a lot more than that, some years less. Some areas of Alaska, like Tok, get much less on average.

    An equipment shed would be a good addition to the homestead. Kudos to Jordan for hanging in there. A couple of years ago it was bitterly cold for a few days and since my neighbor had to work we traded off cutting the ice for the cows to drink on his pond and mine. I would go in the morning and he would go in the evening after work. It was so cold it froze up the chain on the chainsaw so we had to use an axe. I'm getting too old for that kind of stuff. Stay safe and warm 🙏

    It's a winter wonderland! But I would hate to be out there building in it, but you have to do what you have to do. Most of the time if you don't have a good base, the more you drive on it, the soupier it gets. We had a driveway like that and had to have many dumptrucks of rock hauled in to make it solid.

  • @JamesCouch777
    @JamesCouch777 Před 8 měsíci

    With all the trees that were pushed down making the road you could have made a corduroy road through the low spots. I've seen other homesteaders use them and they last for years.

  • @JamesCouch777
    @JamesCouch777 Před 8 měsíci

    Growing up we had about 20-30 acres that were just about as swampy as that driveway. So instead of driving down the road and throwing the hay bales off the truck, over the ditch and then over the fence and then crawling over or under the fence to put them out, I often opted to try and drive through the field which resulted in getting stuck quite often. It's always a gamble but getting stuck is not my idea of fun 🥴.

    I'm a little confused. The video says February 2022 but the post date is August 2023. Am I missing something?

    • @homeatlaska
      @homeatlaska Před 8 měsíci

      I tire pretty easily, so filming + editing I cannot healthily do. Alaska building/snow clearing + filming + editing = Barb is 🤕😵☠️. So I have seasons... seasons of work and filming, and seasons of editing and telling the story of what just happened and where we are now. We lived through 2021 and I told the story mostly as we went along until the build really began. 2022 was just hard. Not a lot of editing that year, but a lot of filming. In late 2022 and early 2023, my family was very confused about stuff here. My posts and pictures on FB didn't align with the videos I was editing and publishing. They were out of sync, and the family was very confused about logistics, our progress, or where things were... there was a bigger clearing, there wasn't a bigger clearing... so much confusion. So in January, I made the "pink video" (czcams.com/video/l-2blCk4Yxk/video.html), for my mom, because I wanted her to see the highlights of what had happened in the build, and to help alleviate some of the confusion of where we were situated and what we'd done so far. I had 118 subscribers. For the whole 2 years, I'd had basically 118 subscribers. Then that video kinda blew-up, and literally overnight, I had a couple thousand subscribers, all wanting to see what was here and now. But I had the whole story to tell yet. So I hustled, and I made videos as fast as I could to tell the story up until now. It took 10 months of non-stop work to do it. Right now, we're in a work/rest phase. If things can calm down here, and the work can be a bit more structured and less physically exhausting, that might be a different story for the whole system I have. I might be able to work/film/edit/release quickly. But right now. I come inside and I'm pretty catatonic a lot of the time after working. So the videos have dates stamped on them for everyone to know exactly where they are in our timeline of events. I hope that helps you understand why things are kinda weird with the time posted and the timestamp on the videos. :) Thank you for watching through them. I'm watching your journey through the videos via your comments, and I do enjoy them so much!
