More Locomotives! Part 29 - The Heart of Wessex Line (well some of it).
On March 6, 2024 I visited Thornford (revisit) and Yetminster Railway Stations (Station 1877) and had a little 17 mile cycle around the local area.
My Route:

Waterloo East a. 10:05
Waterloo d.10:20
Yeovil Junction a. 12:38
Cycled to Thornford
Thornford d. 13:36
Yetminster a 13:39 (The guard advised me I was only the second person he's ever known to travel between these two stations. The other one was the local Member of Parliament).

I purchased a Super Off Peak Day Return London Marylebone to Droitwich Spa and an Off Peak Day Return Droitwich Spa to Redditch for the total £31.95 with my senior railcard. An early start leaving home at 0520 to catch the 0544 to Victoria and then the no. 2 bus to Marylebone. This enable me to visit all the stations between Kidderminster and Redditch via Barnt Green and a good was had.

Nice, what a site! Once the largest intergrated steelworks in the world. 2000 tons of imported iron ore every 2 hours to feed the 4 furnaces i believe. A commodity my ex g/f didn't transport much n her freight trains, being around London, but she moved plenty of stone lol!

I lived in Dittisham and Dartmouth in Devon 1993-2001. Yeah yeah why did i move away?!?! Sometimes I DO wonder!!! I worked at Dart Marina Hotel in Dartmouth and during the summer I frequently left my desk in reception to stand and watch the steam trains go past on the other side of the river, whistle blowing up the Dart Valley. Newton Abbott is rather grand isn't it! Why DOES that recorded announcement say Totness?!? All the local men in the pub I worked in 1993 said 'Totnus...' barely pronouncing the vowel between the n and s. Anyway... was a great station for speeding HSTs. Paignton has a brilliant level crossing. 12:00 looks a bit like Ipplepen direction. Gorgeous. Shame there isn't the sound of HSTs anymore! Love the pup 12:45 You'd need a lottery win to move to Devon now. Even the signal boxes cost a fortune, it seems.

I really wish I'd visited Tonbridge as a kid in the 80s. I've seen video of SUCH a busy and varied place! When I was 8 I wrote to British Railways then chairman Sir Peter Parker, asking a class 47 to 'go slowly past my house' (to see it). He wrote back!! And said 'we would not wish to delay services...' but sent me a First Class ticket to travel to Reading to the HST etc. So mum and I went in August 1979. It was sunny and hot and sadly we don't have a single photo. But I still have the ticket and letter! I had a girlfriend in Hildenborough.

Its little wonder that I was into trains as a boy, I grew up in Dorking - born 1972. The Reading-Tonbridge line ran behind my house which if you take the train from Dorking West to Deepdene our house was on the left just before the station. This line is a classic 'leaves on the line' line. We used to listen to the trains sliding into Deepdene and not being able to get out of Deepdene toward Guildford all autumn. The traction was quite varied then, Class 33's were regular visitors as well as 47s, then the 206 'Tadpole' Units and then 119 DMUs before what there is now. There was never that problem in the steam days and they kept the trees cut back to avoid lineside fires. I'm SO glad that the Boxhill station buildings have survived, when I was spotting in the late 70s onward they were very dilapidated and when Dorking North (very similar style) was needlessly bulldozered in 1980 I think they nearly were too. (Dorking folk reckon that it was a shady deal!). Drivers used to let me travel in the cab up to Boxhill and back - 4SUB or 4EPB or 4VEP. I have a piece of the old iron canopy struts somewhere. I was there most days and the staff knew me well, there was Fred that often let me collect and/or clip rickets when the trains emptied at evening rush hour (I'd meet my dad), Simon, a biker (Boxhill of course is biker heaven on a Sunday) that bought chippy chips for staff one evening and 'accidentally' bought for me too. Mr Dixon the station master who was the first person i ever heard curse lol and then an Italian guy Mick, who once brought an air rifle in to work, and shot pigeons off the roof of the old Platform 2&3 buildings.....!!! not sure if he ate them. Maybe if he was a Tuscan Italian, as pigeon is a staple there haha.... Also SO glad to see that Denbies has honoured that footpath - when I was a kid and teen it was all maize, and me and a mate would make a camp and smoke our first cigarettes there! Deepdene platform used to be just long wooden planks, and during wet weather or snow and ice, was utterly lethal. I went to school in Guildford 83-86 and had a good few slips! Dorking West was Dorking Town when I was a kid, it is beside my old middle school - St Martins. If you stay on the train to Gomshall, that is staggered too, and until very recently you still had to cross the tracks to get to the 'main' side. Despite no recorded fatalities - accidental or otherwise, there is a footbridge now. Better for wheelchair access of course. Gomshall had a wonderful signal box. I haven't stood on Dorking main platform like that for years, I see the underpass is still there as well as the footbridge. Look at this - an interesting (almost) 40 year comparison! czcams.com/video/LrisJOK0i9I/video.html On the far side of Platform 3 there used to be about 6 sidings. So it would be full of 4SUB/4EPB every morning and eve, and meant I got to see some workings too! I spent a lot of time up in the signal box there too, the signal man - Don - carried me over the third rail. It was amazing up there. The hotel as you arrive at Dorking was called the Star & Garter, my grandmother took me and my sister there for lunch frequently and it was quite old school back then, a bit Fawlty Towers type decor. It changed names about 5 times! and was never busy. Thanks for this. A lovely trip and of course its just how i remember it - sunny and warm! And do you know what, I have never seen a Dorking Cockerel (other than that horrid steel thing at the top of Deepdene Avenue). 🐔🍳
