This is a great interview. Much Music probably had the best presenters of any show I've seen (many). They were all very knowledgeable.

I also got to go backstage after of Van Halen in Detroit Michigan at cobo Hall. The only one backstage when I got there it was David Lee Roth and I was so starstruck I could not ask for his autograph all I could do was stare at him. I was 18. There was everything back they're all kinds of food drinks they even have cigarettes for everybody. Well I had met a roadie so the roadie ended up taking me by limousine to the motel the Renaissance center and the next morning I was given a t-shirt of gold Van Halen necklace and money to get home. A memory I will never forget.

I was about 16 in Detroit Michigan. And my friends and myself snuck in to the motel The Ren cen by the steps. The security guards caught us and we were put in the elevator and escorted back downstairs. The elevator stopped on a certain floor and guess who got in the elevator ??? I was in shock I couldn't speak I will never forget I am now sixty years old and I think about it like it's yesterday. It was David Lee Roth he had a girl on each side of him. His arms were around their shoulders. He only went down a couple floors and got out. When the elevator opened up I'm not lying to you a robot was there. Now this was the late 1970's. Well my friends and myself were in HEAVEN FOR A FEW.

David Lee Roth is a brilliant song man and street philosopher people mistake for a clown. Van Halen was very lucky to get David and vice versa. Dave gets trashed and laughed at by Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar, two hacks by comparison. Without Dave no one would’ve ever heard of Van Halen despite the VH brothers superb+ musicianship; Alex is the most appreciated yet unmentioned musician in history, grounded in Jazz. All the money Michael says they got once Sammy joined the band wouldn’t have been there if Diamond Dave didn’t set them on their steep trajectory by so perfectly complimenting the VH brothers and Michael. When he rejoined the band with Wolfgang on bass for 2012’s A Different Kind Of Truth, the magic picked up where it left off. His lyrics and vocals gave their music the spark it lacked since 1984. Read the lyrics to As Is. Pure Dave and a lot more mature than would appear on a casual listen. Pure VH. Underrated lyrics and chemistry. God bless Sammy. He gave you mainstream power ballads and rock with very little roll, as Keith Richards or Elvis Costello would say. Van Halen the band in the best timeless version of themselves is Dave, Eddie, Alex and Michael or Wolfgang holding down the bass. You want power ballads, go to a Journey concert. Dave married rock to roll to dance and soul. Brilliant and timeless!!
