The Log Cabin Project
Registrace 15. 07. 2014
Years ago I fell in love with log cabins. The men and women who came from the east brought with them a building style that was perfectly adapted to the demands of the American frontier. A hewn log cabin could be built with nothing more than an axe and a strong arm. Many log cabins survived decades of use and abuse and many hewn-log cabins survive to this day. I wanted to know what it was like to build a hewn-log cabin using simple tools and techniques that the settlers employed. I invite you to join me on this journey of exploring the craft of American log cabin construction and the frontier culture that made those buildings possible.
We'll build a log cabin. We'll carve spoons and bowls. We'll explore the crafts, landscapes, stories, and cultures that helped to shape America.

The Bears of Blue River was written in the early 20th Century by author Charles Major. Although it is a work of fiction, it describes an early Indiana as the settlers might have seen it and paints an exciting picture of frontier life in the state. Please sit back and enjoy as I narrate Chapter 1, Part 1 of this classic story.
Hewing Half a Log @thehewinghoosier

Hewing logs can be alot of work. In this video I show how long it takes to rough-hew a cabin log prior to finishing it out with a broadaxe. This technique removes wood efficiently with only a felling axe. It was incredibly important for settlers to carry as few tools as possible and this hack made log hewing a relatively quick process.
Rehanging a Vintage Broadaxe @thehewinghoosier

In this video I rehang a damaged 19th Century Isaiah Blood broadaxe to hew logs for a cabin. Isaiah Blood's factory produced axes from 1837-1870, so this is a special axe to restore.

I thought it would be fun to see the broadaxe work from below. When I originally posted this video, one of my Facebook subscribers joked that I was giving off serious "Grim Reaper vibes" with my work hoodie. Not intentional I assure you, but I'm keeping it! Please Like and Subscribe if I've earned it. Also, check out The Log Cabin Project on Facebook for more log cabin updates. Thanks for stopp...

I appreciate you sharing the process, but can you share that broad axe? Don't really have the funds to buy one ATM.
Grab one on ebay or the Axe Junkies Facebook group!
That is some hard work! Looks great.
Thanks Josh! I love your channel!
Great accuracy sir
Thanks bud!
Awesome footage! I just ordered a broad axe. It's flat on the left side. I've been dreaming of building a dovetail cabin in Alaska when I retire
You should 💯 % do it! Keep me updated!
Sweet log
Ha! Definitely not a battle axe. These used to be in our hardware stores! Still, the process looks quite medieval huh? Have a good one!
Этим топором кости рубить, а не брус тесать...
No idea why he's doing that to the log. No idea why I just watched this.
I'm building a replica of a 19th century hewn log cabin using as many hand tools as I can. This is one of ways that the original builders would flatten the logs for those structures.
Get the sound and action in sync, sound should not be heard before the axe hits
Not quite sure on that. There does seem to be a slight delay on the log scoring section, but not the rest of the vid. I'll see what I can do about that in future vids. Thanks for the critique.
this is the best video ive ever seen!
Thank you. This has been a really fun project so far.
Thank you. What would you use your cabin for if you built one?
In my opinion your channel showing this project should do well. It's interesting to me anyway. I've been a carpenter and a woodcarver for 35 years. I've never attempted a cabin but I've thought seriously about doing it.
You have a nice accurate swing. It looks like tulip poplar. That's what I would use simply because it's an abundant source of straight timber in my area.
Thank you! Keen eye friend. It is tulip. Large logs. A little soft, but they will be covered so it will work out nicely.
I have a hewing axe I’ve never used. Cool to see someone using one. Thanks for the video!
That is so cool! They are awesome tools. Imagine the guys that swung them for hours per day!
Linken logs
Indeed! Maybe a bit bigger? ;)
Let’s go!!
Yes!!! The stone for the footers should be here shortly, then I should be dropping content from the ground up!
Much better 👏👏👏😉
Your camera/phone isn’t going to survive if you keep this up 😂❤️
😱😂
Yeah. Apparently I hate my phone! ;)
