Growing Up in Disneyland 2nd Edition
"Growing up in Disneyland-Second Edition" is part biography about Ron's father, Broadway, movie, and TV star, Don DeFore, and his own own life in a Hollywood celebrity family and beyond. Don DeFore earned a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame and was a household name in the 1950s through the 80s. He co-starred in numerous feature films with many Hollywood legends, TV shows, and live theater. He is best known for his co-starring role as "Mr. B" in the 1960s TV series, "Hazel" as well as his co-starring role in the 1950s TV series, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," in which he played the next-door-neighbor, "Thorny." The book includes much of Don's unpublished autobiography, "Hollywood-DeFore 'n After." The first version was published in 2019 and drew rave reviews but is no longer in print. The Second Edition, to be published in 2024, has 25% more content from Don and Ron, updates, and more than 125 photos.

To pursue other interests, particularly a show where he could star or co-star as he did in "Hazel" in 1961. He left O&H in 1957 the year he opened his own restaurant in Disneyland - "Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue" in Frontierland 1957-1962.

Another great part of a "Hazel" episode....that 🏈 he kicked ended up in The Johnson's chimney....AGAIN in same episode.....thanks for the slide in of your info in this of something we never knew back then. I as a kid was a watcher from the very 1st episode of Hazel as it aired. I am now 72. Your Dad & Shirley Booth's chemistry together was the secret to the show's success. I still watch Hazel EVERYDAY...... on my cable's Antenna TV channel. I do recall my family could not believe when your father & Whitney Blake were dropped by the show, I always wondered if Shirley Booth had anything at all to do with this??---I do know what the history books say about this situation.

Hi Ron, I just wanted to say that I have always been a super fan of your Dad since I was a little girl!! He was so totally an amazing talent! I have recently been “soaking up” all of your Dad’s videos on CZcams from his appearances on “Ozzie and Harriet”, “Hazel” as well as any other appearances and biographies! He always epitomized a good guy that was smart, handsome, and with an air of seriousness yet he was able to melt and completely do a U-turn like in many episodes of Hazel. I research the Golden Age of Hollywood Motion Pictures, TV, and Radio and oftentimes once you start delving into great beloved actors, one is sometimes disappointed at how they really were in real life. With your Dad, I found the opposite to be true……he was such a fine man in real life! I have been watching your channel chronicling your successes as well as well as your Dad’s! I know he is looking down proudly at you! Sending you many blessings!

According to Google search he was worth 93 million at the point of his death. I suppose it was devided among his children or maybe only his favorite children. That is if he had favorites.

All I know is neither owned cats but did own dogs. Shirley brought hers to the studio every day.

How beautiful! As a fellow behind two life-story documentaries (both musical--the first about a Woodstock Festival bands manager [etc.] and the second about a pioneering record store owner during Detroit's Golden Age of music) I would recommend you to turn all those clips you have of your dad as well as the memories you and others still living have into a documentary about the man. You are the best equipped person on earth to handle producing the documentary your father would love. I hope you can and will do that I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.

@@rhd4444 - I can give you endless advice. I am in Detroit. I am still working on my documentary about my record mogul pal. My first doc subject and I shot his life story twice over a couple years. The second time, he wrote down his life story, chapter by chapter, on legal pads. He memorized his life story and would recite it on camera, bit by bit. This second doc is more of an anthology that I will turn into a documentary. You look like you already have a video anthology collection of your father's life. I would recommend breaking his life up into every possible chapter, kind of how Stanley Kubrick Dewey Decimal'ed the life of Napoleon in preparation for his never-made Napoleon film. You get to draw targets around your shot arrows at this point. That is, you pick the best moments that seem to flow, and you arrange them chronologically (or not in order if there are a few separate strong currents that intertwined and flowed throughout his life) You then get three shots at perfecting your doc from there Write a narrative Shoot extra footage narrating over objects and pictures and intercutting any interviews with living contemporaries of his. Then you edit that to be more seamless. And I guess you get a fourth shot at shaping the narrative in how you release and market the film. If I may be rude: it seems even the best folks are forgotten unless someone makes a singular effort to keep alive the memory of that deceased person. You have to be the ultimate auteur to see it through to a proper finish and dissemination into the world and into the culture and history. You are your own best friend when it comes down to it (well, and family and friends of your dear father) in making a proper doc about him. Again, start with the forest and then look through the trees and transplant the best ones that go well together into a new, better laid out forest. Then write down that narrative; chase living peers to praise him; edit that into your existing footage. Then market it to death and try to give your father his proper place in history and culture. I am in a real pickle with my current doc. Some folks in Detroit have most of the best photographs with huge celebrities that my doc subject had and gave to these folks in Detroit They have evaded my calls to meet up for over a year now, and so I am having to do without the very best pictures to show what Lee is telling. You are very blessed to have so many fantastic personal effects from your dad. Try to document those for use as cutaways for your documentary

I am trying to get Third Man Records in midtown Detroit to let me celebrate Lee's 88th birthday at the record store (Jack White's store), since it is the coolest record store in the city and Lee used to run an even cooler record store down the road for twenty-five years. There's no date on the record, but knowing my parents' history fairly well I would guess it was around 1940.

When did KFWB become a news station? Think it is around the corner from Capital Records. Use to live in Hollywood. Many years ago. Lived in LA for 12 years. KHJ was on Melrose. KRLA was one of my favorite stations. Miss all of them. I can still pick up 1070 on my radio here 400 miles away. Of course, now it would be easier just to go to the web site.
