When it comes to kicks and laterals and picking up live unclaimed loose balls almost without breaking stride, Aussie football players have lots of experience compared to NFL football players. Aussie players are somewhat mystified though by things like kicking tees and forward passes, and by things like blocking in front of a runner or in front of a quarterback. No outright need for a kicking tee though when a drop kick carries further than a place kick, and can be used in any situation in which a place kick is allowed within NFL rules. On a field goal attempt from scrimmage, a place kick is a little bit quicker, but a drop kick carries further, and frees up the holder to be an extra blocker, so an Aussie football player could go either way on place kicking versus drop kicking a field goal, except on truly long field goal attempts from more than 68 yards where without a favorable tail wind a place kick too often simply doesn't have sufficient range, making a drop kick typically the superior choice in those ultra long range situations. In any event, Aussie players aren't hired with an intended role of throwing forward passes or an intended role of quarterback pass protection blocking, but are hired for kicking roles. On a fake kick play, lateralling the ball or running the ball are potentially great playbook options for Aussie players, but forward passing the ball 40 or 50 or 60 yards down the field not so much, due to lack of experience with throwing forward passes in general. Also, in forward passing, there's a story about an Aussie player being reminded by way of an official's yellow flag that forward passes should be thrown forward, rather than being punched forward, probably one of those penalties for illegally batting the ball. Forward passes (and to a lesser extent laterals) should be thrown, rather than punched or batted. Some 120 years ago, there was an American football rulebook that actually pictured a ball being punched forward, but that's not been allowed for more than a century in American football.
