Vrij en Onverveerd
English description further downwards.
Nederlands:
English
A film gained by Hans Barnstijn and Robert Kiek (the speaker) for the governmenteducationservice in London during the Second World War. The film contains a detailed report over the Dutch and their part in the battle against Germany and Japan.
The film is announced as followed: "It is Paramount an honour to contribute this filmreport to the people of The Netherlands, that through their tough resistance against the enemy has gained the admiration of the world. This film gives an overview about the battle of the United Naions and the important role the Dutch Armed Forces played outside of the occupied territories. Because even them, who in freedom fought under the proud red-white-blue, have kept through these dark years the reputation of The Netherlands name high. May The Netherland remain as what it is now again: Free, and what it continuously was during their opression: Without Fear"

POV: Mum spots her friends in a supermarket.

this song, as with many others from this musical, just makes me sob. theres something about knowing that the men who sung these songs are dead. Plus the orchestra that plays afterward and the messages they can tell. god damn war
I love this film so much.
finally saw the film last night . it should be a classic
RIP the singer

This is amazing. Is there any chance to get an MP3 version for download? I think this one could be good for a ringtone
How old are ya?

This was a really creative way of using Battle Hymn of Republic
A silly German sausage Dreamt Napoleon he'd be, Then went and broke his promise, It was made in Germany. He shook hands with Britannia And eternal peace he swore, Naughty boy, he talked of peace Whilst he prepared for war. He stirred up little Serbia To serve his dirty trick But dirty nights at Liege Quite upset this Dirty Dick. His luggage labeled, 'England' His programme nicely set, He shouted, 'First stop Paris', But he hasn't got there yet. Chorus: For Belgium put the kibosh on the Kaiser; Europe took a stick and made him sore; On his throne it hurts to sit, And when John Bull starts to hit, He will never sit upon it anymore. He'll be banished to the woods And we'll bar his German goods, And we'll never drink his lager anymore. His warships sailed upon the sea, They looked a pretty sight, But when they heard a bulldog bark They disappeared in fright The Kaiser said, 'Be careful! If by Jellicoe they're seen, Every man-o-war I've got Will be a submarine.' We chased his ships to Turkey And the Kaiser startled, stood, Scratched his head and said, 'Don't Hurt, You see I'm touching wood.' Then Turkey bought the warships, Just to aid the German plot. Be careful, Mister Turkey, Or you'll do the Turkey Trot. Chorus: But Belgium put the kibosh on the Kaiser; Europe took a stick and made him sore; When we enter Germany, Knock the Kaiser it will be; Oh, it won't be 'Hoch the Kaiser anymore! And if Turkey makes a stand' She'll get Ghurked and Japanned, And her views she'll never air 'em anymore! He'll have to go to school again, And learn his geography, He quite forgot Australia, And the hands across the sea. India and Canada, The Russian and the Jap, And England looked so small' He couldn't see it on the map. Whilst Ireland seemed unsettled, 'Ah' said he 'I'll settle John', But he didn't know the Irish Like he knew them later on. Tho' the Kaiser stirred the lion, Please excuse him from the crime, His lunatic attendant wasn't with him at the time. Chorus: When Belgium put the kibosh on the Kaiser; Europe took a stick and made him sore; And in Berlin one day, Every German band will play, Rule Britannia, rule the waves for ever more! We shall shout for vict'ry's joy; 'Hold Your Hand Out, Naughty Boy;' You must never play at soldiers, anymore!
And when they ask us how dangerous it was Oh, we'll never tell them, no, we'll never tell them We spent our pay in some café And fought wild women night and day 'Twas the cushiest job we ever had And when they ask us, and they're certainly going to ask us The reason why we didn't win the Croix de Guerre Oh, we'll never tell them, no, we'll never tell them There was a front, but damned if we knew where And they're certainly going to ask us The reason why we didn't win the Croix de Guerre Oh, we'll never tell them, no, we'll never tell them There was a front, but damned if we knew where
Whenever I hear this, I'm immediately hit with the realisation that most of the men who went away were lost.
Exactly!
When you’re a a friend’s house and the toilet clogs:
Oh! Oh! Oh! It's a lovely war, Who wouldn't be a soldier ay? Oh it's a shame to take the pay!
As soon as reveille has gone, We feel just as heavy as lead, But we never get up 'till the sergeant brings Our breakfast onto bed!

What an amazing movie, with an equally great soundtrack
I loved (and still do) this film. For its playful cynicism, soaring patriotic scores, and simple humility around the human experience. A masterclass of Filmography.
As an American , I loved the film for its accurate portrayal of America entering the war.
I remember this from a lifetime ago😮..thankfully the hippies won the war..I think..hard to tell
did it end with we'll be buried over there?
It does, they say that they won't come back as they will be buried 'over there'.
@@snufelke oh lord.

Thank you for sharing this with us!
My mood when it's only 30 minutes before class dismissal.
Why was the sound volume so low until after 3 minutes
I believe it is the introductory of the song, so it starts out quiet but gets louder in volume throughout it's duration.
This will always be the greatest movie of the Great War. None captures that generation of lost men better. May they be sitting around the father's table as brothers. For all eternity
Thank you for uploading this. Its so good to hear these in high quality I just wish they had also done a studio recording of "Bombed Last Night", or "Beside the Seaside", especially an extended part of where Douglas Haig sings about the cavalry.
Fantastic. whenever I play the DVD ,( which is often) I always replay this scene as they march towards the Pier entry and the Lights come on

One of my family members fought as a German soldier in World War I, but i don’t know how he died.
Epic
Can’t barley hear it
How does this masterpiece has only 911 views?
the best musical/anti-war film ever
Probably the single best standalone march version of this song I think I've seen. Thanks a ton for this and cheers to anyone who thinks the same.
I absolutely love it, and replay the opening scenes of it on the DVD over and over. It captures the very essence of the era, in complete contrast to public feelings in 1939.
I freaking love this because Over There is one of my Favorite Songs from WW1!, Including It’s a Long Way to Tipperary aswell and Erika ^^
Quite a load of songs from that era manage to capture a certain 'feel', I must say that my personal favourite would be 'Somewhere in France, Dear Mother' sung by Stanley Kirkby.
Erika was made in 1938, By Herms Niel. No, it wasn't made by WW1 soldiers or anything. Herms Niel, a German who had connections to the unfunny German political party made this song for the SS pretty much.
Although, the song itself has no mention of the nazi regime Nor the SS, it was just used on public events a lot
So great to hear these incredible orchestrations again and Jean-Pierre Cassel and Maggie Smith giving it everything they’d got - I don’t know which one I had more of a crush on…Thank you so much!
This is the best version of "Over There".
Such a shame that it's only a minute long

Agreed 100%!
Thanks so much for uploading this; one of my favourite films and I had this soundtrack on vinyl, but could never find it on CD or DVD, so consequently haven't heard it for years.
The same goes for me, but if I remember correctly then some time ago the HD variant was being sold on Amazon/Ebay. So if you are interested then I could recommend you to keep a watch on those sites 😉
Great original track!
It is a shame they never used the whole song in the film.
Full song or not, it still turned out to be a scene to behold.
Thank you for uploading this. Never heard it alone before, and the use of it was terrific and very impactful at the end of Oh! What A Lovely War.
That was defenetly one of the most emotional endings I saw in movies
