So, were you tempted to convert or supplement your Nikon gear with OM 1? I assume that's why OM systems sent it to you or maybe you suggested to them to permit this test b/c you were curious, having seen others' results.

I ended up fitting a red dot sight to help pickup the subject quickly 😃

Currently own the OM-1 MK2 and the OM 150-400 Pro ..and this combo is the top dog is wildlife photography IMO...but! Olympus/OM kinda dropped the ball on the bayonet of this magnificent lens. It is waaaayy too soft and will scratch easily. There are threads about it already. A real oversight because other than that, this lens really has almost no competitors on the market.

OM-1 MK2 + 150-400 Pro. Nothing can beat this combo.

In poor light, 20 frames per second is OK. But in good light, 50 frames per second is optimum. The photos of the green heron would show much more variation in wing positions and fish positions. In good light I will always shoot at 50 fps.

I have been using a z6ii with a afs 200-500 and so far it's just been awesome. a z6iii and 180-600 would be my upgrade in the future. my must have would be a 95mm variable nd filter. on sunny days if you wanna take some videos of birds its imperative you have a good quality nd filter

When I first heard about this lens, and for quite sometime after, this became my dream lens... and I'm a Canon guy :) lol However, after using the Canon 800 F11, and then, the Canon 200-800, I've come to feel the PF 800 F6.3 is just not versatile enough for my purposes. Not to mention, Nikon still does not make a new APS-C body to put it on, and a straight 800mm is usually too short for the stuff I shoot. Not doubting the image quality. But then nearly ALL modern lenses made for mirrorless bodies can make sharp images with good contrast and color, when used correctly. As for the price, I'm not going to say the price is not some part of my thinking.... But then, if I felt my end results would be better with the PF 800, I'd do whatever I had to to get one. Lucky for myself, and my purposes (and my bank account) the best lens on the market is only $1900 :) Edit: You mentioned "heat haze" from shooting stuff a long ways away..... JMPO, but I think the biggest mistake folks make with long lenses, is to think, "Great ! Now I can shoot things a long ways away" Ha :) I shoot with an 800mm lens on an APS-C for a 1280mm equivalent,. and yet I typically try to get within 22-30 ft of my birds :) Heat haze is almost never a problem :) You can see my stuff on my photo page. Last year I switched from Canon full frame to the OM-1, mainly for my macro. It has blown me away with the 90mm Pro macro lens and I also picked up the 100-400mm thinking I'd try my hand at birds and wildlife. To be honest I am surprised by how little I miss the benefits of full frame. The dynamic range and high ISO performance is a lot better than I was expecting and the reduced weight compared to my old setup is a huge bonus.

Correction to my Correction: the full frame equivalent focal length of the 150-400 with the teleconverter is in fact 1000mm. I say as much in the video and my text correction is….incorrect

Worth noting that Olympus were the first with pro capture. It was on their EM1X back in 2019. All of these other brands Nikon and Canon talk as if it's a new thing on their cameras that they invented. 😂 I was a life long Nikon pro cameras user until Andy Rouse changed to Olympus. I was intrigued, tried them and have been using them for 2 years. Great video, subscribed. 👍

Why are you using the neck strap on the camera body? there are lens lugs for that strap which don't stress the lens mount...... for Pro Cap, you can lower the load on the processor by shooting at 25 fps and shoot with 15 pre frames and a total burst of 25 so you don't fill the card too fast

Your videos are more personal that’s the difference and you provide first hand experience without following trends of latest gears…..ironically the better the presentation the slicker a channel gets it becomes less personal.

150-400… 400 x 1.25 = 500 x 2 = 1000mm. You said it right in the video. Your pop up correction was wrong. Anyway, I’m actually very interested in the OM system. But I shoot with a 1280mm equivalent now. And for small birds, it’s really what I need. Still though, I’ve seen a lot of really nice stuff from OM1 setups 🙂👍 Wish Oly would send me this kit 🙂 I rent everything first, but even that’s not cheap.

Hi Alan! You are fast becoming one of my top CZcamsrs! Congratulations on the 4k! I will be following your review on the OM-1. I mentioned on one of your other posts that I have the Zf and the Tamron 150-500 and I've started making that work. Ergonomically, the combo is still quite heavy for my small hands/wrists, especially after all the procedures I had a couple of years ago. So, I'm leery about picking up a Z6iii or Z8. The OM-1 has been on my list but I've been hesitating on anything but full frame. I think I might have to give it a go now... at least a rental. You did use "big white" in the video. How did the 300mm work for you?

Enjoying your videos Alan. One question I have for you that I haven't seem to hear you mention, but so many other channels do complain about this with the ZF... How do you feel with the long lenses and the lack of grip on the ZF? I lean so much towards that camera body, but have not gone through with getting it because of all the noise and negative chatter on channels complaining about the grip and handholding specifically. You as a wildlife and bird photographer, are putting way longer and heavier lenses than I probably would, so your thoughts on that would be nice to hear. For myself I prefer landscape and some street/cityscape photography. I'd probably go wide lens and I really liking the z24-70mm 2.8 lens. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Wow, I've gone through 5 iterations of wildlife photographers' tips on other cameras, but these settings for the Zf are PERFECT!! I cannot thank you enough! I just picked up the Tamron 150-500mm Z lens. I photograph birds and wildlife only 25% of the time so I wasn't ready to put down a lot of cash for a Z lens, the cheapest options being 180-600mm which is too heavy and the 400mm f/4.5 which would be fabulous but twice the price. I look forward to using these settings with my Zf and the new lens. Thank you so much!

Great video, very informative! You mentioned you focus the subject at center point and then recompose. I am curious, with AF-C and dynamic focus area, the focus area is fixed (e.g. center point), how do you maintain focus on the subject when you move the camera? In my understanding, with this combination, something in the focus area will be constantly focused. If you move the subject out of the focus area, the subject won't be focused anymore. Did I miss something?

I do not agree with this review. You have basically made a comparison with Z9. Yes agreed the AF is little sluggish but when a bird is a habitat where there are branches and trees , you need to use single point AF. 99% of cameras will fail against Z9. For those who are with a budget , this is a good offering. I have got brilliant images with the same setup you had in this video.

Great video. I enjoy this format because most of the photography I do is just walking around (or floating in a kayak!) and photographing whatever I come across. I especially like the white-eyed vireo photos. They are hard to get.

A few weeks ago, I decided I would take on bird photography. So I binge watch a lot of videos about it, such as yours. And I kid you not, I started seeing birds everywhere. I dont even have to go to a special place to find them. I started noticing them, especially in the mornings when I wake up and check on my plants in my balcony. I cant wait for my camera to reach. Im excited to practice ❤

You are quickly becoming my favourite CZcams wildlife photographer. My biggest question is what lens are you using for your “talking to camera” clips? It’s really great quality 👌

The image circle is move evenly illuminated, with more light rays hitting the sensor at close to a right angle. The image circle may be wider, but that is not the main feature, and most likely the image circle is restricted by some mechanical vignetting (outside the full frame area, of course).

What was it behind your left shoulder at 1.40. weasel family I think?
