She doesn't sound to me very confortable with the difficulties of the aria, and she seems to hide those difficulties with expression inflections of doubtful taste...

Well, there is quite a lot of criticism about this rendition of "Ah, mes amis" by Juan Diego Florez though some of the post authors agree that no singer can be equally brilliant in their every performance. I cannot agree with Urzula Zirne suggesting that JDF could ever afford lacking sense of responsibility. IMHO he has always given his best! I think it's a very good performance, maybe only the first high C is a bit insecure. It's amazing that 5 years later, in 2015, JDF has performed "Ah, mes amis" impeccably in several concerts and his voice sounded magnificent. Bravo, JDF!

Such a flexible Rossini performance - clarity not only of diction but rapidity and perfectly clear runs - so very difficult to achieve - superb fioritura execution in the cabaletta and moving singing in the aria. I think she sounds very Italian. Definitely sounds like she at least studied there for a long period of time. A lot of squillo in the voice, similar to an early Rancatore or Cinzia Forte. This brassy Italian sound can be quite vulgar, but she manages to stave of the wobble and and cover the top well, avoiding the problems so many italian lyrics have today.

I think it well. No one is near pefectiona, and all can have rouugh time or yhey would not be worth hearing if it was the same each time. I've done a great deal oof opera accompaniment and think Florez if the latest jewel to enege.

It doesn't seem very fair to take an aged Ramey, with all his experience, and a young D'Arcangelo in his artistic infancy mimicking, as toddlers mimic their parents, the best of the day and on this basis find Ramey to be superior. D'Arcangelo was supreme in L'Elisir; witty and with a lot of presence. Ramey I have found to be rather wooden. Having said that, I'm not sure operatic actors have any recognisable 'mannierisms' to be copied at all; could you be specific?

But if one were to come close, it would be d'Arcangelo. He is certainly a more engaging actor.

Perhaps it was her "interpretation," but I would not have recommended consistently singing under pitch for "dramatic" effect.

Thanks for posting. This is wonderful and makes me very excited to hear her in Puritani at the Met next season. She does sound very Russian to me... something about the way her consonants give way to her vowels. But I can hear every word, so I can't complain too much!

"Astonishing" when she's well... and "brilliant" when she's sick. There are very, very few things she's done and I've run across that I didn't like at least a lot.

I have only seen the you tube video of the Paris production. To me it has been one of the best operatic things I have EVER seen. The combination of portraying Cleopatra as a young, emotional girl, the fantastic cast, Emmanuelle Haim and the humorous parts with Zazzo and Natalie was wonderful. Her performance of the serious, semitragic scenes was phenomenal also.
