    Without doubt, CPM3V with proper dimensions, grind, heat treat and temper IS a better steel. BUT IF you hold 1095 CV to the same standards is great. Problem with CPM3V is just like 1095CV you MUST maintain it. CPM3V can be very difficult and slower to sharpen than 1095CV in the field. Same applies to A2. ESEE is a top notch bush cutting tool company with an outstanding warranty. This coming from an old school Cold Steel Carbon V user since 1988. I have an old Trail master that I have beaten the dog snot out of. Before the sale, I sent it back to Ventura for a rehandle, and sharpening. Still use it today along with my SRK and Ghurkha Khukuri

    Whats with the face covering? Also first things first. If a Zombie type thing happened. I'd hit up a Motorcycle shop for a leather jacket, pants, gloves and helmet. Guns make noise, noise attracts attention. Not good very bad. Unless you can get a silencer for it. Plus, with a semi auto, you need clips. With a Revolver you don't.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 Před 3 měsíci

    The Junglas will do much of the work of a light hatchet and will split even better as a froe. It's about the same weight as a light hatchet. I use an Ontario SP53 Bolo. Fairly similar specs, but in 5160 and profiled for a little more head weight. There's a decent argument that 1095 may have a little too much carbon for big knives where 1084 or 80crv2 might be the sweet spot. S35VN will hold an edge a long time, but it won't take the beating that 1095 or 5160 will without breaking or chipping. CPM 3V is fairly tough for a fancy/hard steel and isn't too hard to field sharpen. It's just a little expensive. For big knives, I like the low alloy steels that lean towards tool steel, such as 1095 Cro-Van and 52100.

    great video John, i have many knives of many different types of steel & have been using knives for many years, from my personal experience, i don't believe any steel is actually bad & there's a lot of misconception out there due to these paper cutting fanboys who have been listening to the wrong information from the wrong people for too long & have become brainwashed into believing that they need all these so called super steels that have become available. i believe what is more important is that whatever steel you have has been heat treated properly to maximise the performance of that particular steel so you get the best strength & edge retention for the intended purpose for that particular tool & don't go & use that tool outside of its intended purpose. look after the tool, maintain that tool properly & it will always serve you well.

    Good video. 👍🏼👍🏼 I get annoyed at guys that say 32 ounces is too heavy for a knife. If your life isn’t worth carrying 2 pounds, maybe you shouldn’t be out in the woods anyway. I like the Junglass, but my go-to is the TOPS Armageddon. Especially after the guys at TOPS smoothed down that finger choil in the middle of the handle. Never had a problem with 1095 from TOPS…. Been carrying and using their knives over ten years.

    It's not a bad steel holds an edge reasonably well easy to sharpen in the field and reasonably tough it just sucks with corrosion but if you keep it oiled or have a protective coating you'll do fine. I think Dr. Larrin Thomas (magnacut inventor) even mentions that it's one of his favorite steels. I own the Junglas and esee 6 take a look at architect knives they are the love child of esee, tops and white river.

    Ah man, sad to see that (not surprised though). I love the Decimate-series especially the brush machete, I soo want one but 3Cr ist't well suited for this, even 1055 would be better. The weird thing is they do produce some stuff in 1095 and 65Mn. I would rather have it in 65Mn than 1095, but either is better than 3Cr. Not saying 3Cr can't work, it's similar to 420 after all, but it has to be really soft to not be brittle. Looks like Schrade tempered it quite hard. Length wise this one is really hard at the limit for a blade I would trust in a non high-end stainless steel, the brush machete I definately want in carbon steel.

    #1 - get rid of the ESEE Junglas, it's too big and too heavy #2 - the Stanley cook pot is good for boiling water, but not for carrying. Add one or two water bottles and a nesting cup and replace that green plastic tab at the lid with a metal ring that has a 45°-bend in it #3 - add two sets of underwear and wool socks (one set for hiking, one set for sleeping, one set for rinsing/drying) #4 - add some water purification tablets, your filter will not remove viruses and you may not be able to light a fire #5 - add a compass and a map as well as a whistle and a mirror #6 - pre-cut your cordage to 5/10/20/40' lenghts and burn the ends slim and properly at home. If you exspect to hike 14 days, you have to set up and break down camp 13 times. #7 - add raingear, you can't exspect 14 days of sunshine #8 - add some 3' of waxed jute (Ø 6-8mm) as fire-starter

    05:40 I see this model also is made in china. JoeX model was the original one which was made in SouthAfrica. Mine i got recently origins also from china. I wonder if there is a major diffenence in hardening specs, the RSA ones were superior. your right the handel is bad, very bad. Without a lanyard it is impossible to keep grip on it when working. Your model looks as if there is a finer finish on the bevel in comparison to mine which is complete rough grinded. I consider a regrind with a lesser angle specially for making curles. Price in Europe about 42€ at the moment. Thanks for the review buddy!

    1095 is a “good” steel???! Wtf is that made out of then? I consider 1095 a low tier steel at BEST! I won’t touch a blade unless it’s AUS-8, VG-1, or CPM3V

    • @JohnBlackwell-Highmountain
      @JohnBlackwell-Highmountain Před 4 měsíci

      1095 is a working man's steel. It won't hold a edge as well as something like s30v. But 1095 hardened well, like esee does. Is a very good steel. That blade is 3cr13. Some have claimed it lasted them 10 plus years so. Some of these low tier steels like 1055, 3cr13, 1075. Are actually really good for the money and perform just as well as the steels you have listed. If they are hardened correctly.

    You probably hit a knot inside the wood, or a dried sap pocket. I've broken a chip out of a knife on a knot before. They can be hard as a piece of metal. It's nothing new though. Been happening since men have been using chopping tools. The first one that comes to mind is Nessmuk writing about hard spruce knots. I've learned my lesson. The only knife tool I'll use for wood working is a machete. Otherwise I use a hatchet or axe as far as man-powered tools. The kukri is most likely tempered too hard and brittle for the shock of chopping Better luck next go round

Boot laces are multi stranded And i wear weather apropriate clothing..... ive also got one of those dinkie survival card gimmicks in the wallet because it was a gift from my niece. Bags are cool, but some items belong in pockets on your body. Id be a pain but i could still make a container with whats on my body. Food for thought. That's very true 👍. I agree with people carrying useful items in their pockets, (knives,multi tool, lighter, etc). However from my experience and yours may vary. When going on long walks. Stuff in your pockets tends to irritate and get bunched up awkwardly. Now in urban settings, yes it would be more useful with the pocket carry as opposed to carrying a 25 pound bag every where. But where I live a 10 min drive in any direction is rural. So for me I like the bag 🎒 👍

    I would make one recommendation. One your knife tied to your sheath. One thing you learn in the military and hunting. Anything not tied to you will disappear. I would put a small lanyard then hook the lanyard to the sheath. Just think about walking along a branch pops the knife out. Being at the bottom of the sheath you'd never feel it. Being black you'd most likely never find it. I believe really big monkey uses sheaths like this he also ties the lanyard to the sheath. Just a observation don't wanna see ya lose anything especially at prices today.
