I like that in this video of demonstrating sloppy-but-common French phrasing, that you also use sloppy-but-common English (for example you say, "gunna" rather than "going to" (0:42)).

I love that too. I’ve always wondered what the French equivalent of those kinds of English tics. An intelligent English speaker often uses them, in casual speech or even for humor, but what would be the French equivalent of “gonna”, or “kinda”, that she used also? I might say “ I ain’t gonna do that” to be funny or for emphasis, knowing full well it is both grammatically wrong and sloppy. What would be the French equivalent?

@@phillycatlady my guess for English equivalents to "ain't" is to check yt videos of Quebec slang. I was told that one reason speakers of "continental French" disparage Quebecoise French is that the continental French has changed ("evolved" in my friends words) while Quebecoise French has remained quite insulated from the rest of the French speaking world. Of course I can't determine the veracity, but I still watch those quebecoise based videos before I travel for bike trips and ski trips into Quebec.

Hey that's such a good question! They both mean the same thing. The difference is that "combien" will be used at the end of a sentence or as a stand alone word. For example: "- tu peux me prêter quelques chemises ? - pas de problème, il t'en faut combien ?" But if it is followed by another word within the same sentence, then it changes to "combien de" For example "Il te faut combien de chemises ?" "J'achète combien de baguettes ?" Etc. does it make more sense?

I am 68 and I want to learn French again, I learnt before when I attended a French school in Lausanne aged 5 to 8. The trial lesson went well but I was very nervous. I have booked weekly lessons going forward as my tutor and I got on well. I made it very clear what my goal was, and a timeframe. As you say, this is essential. I am really looking forward to the first lesson on Friday and we have already agreed the topic areas for the first few lessons. You are correct in that engaging with the tutor with questions etc is really good, my tutor communicates with me very well which gives me confidence that the learning journey will be successful.
