(Emergency Meeting) Powder Coating Nothing, SaaB Sonett Restoration Part 19
Ok so this one isn’t actually that serious, but I had a test soon and an opportunity to powdercoat stuff. So you know, I guess a bit of frenzy is acceptable. In this video I struggle to get the steering wheel off, begin to take apart the gauges, and select what I would like to powdercoat. Does it go according to plan? No, It never does. But this music always makes me happy! This episode contains: Forever, Sunshine, and Sakura by Karl Casey @WhiteBatAudio .

Pulling out the Wiring Harness Saab restoration Part 18
zhlédnutí 194Před 14 dny
Favorite thumbnail so far. But I'm sure I will have a new favorite soon enough. So in this episode we just rip every bit of wire I can find out of the Sonetts chassis. Originally I had intended to be more careful and try and preserve the harness, maybe there was some percentage of it that I could still use. But it quickly became apparent that's not going to happen. I saved as much as the origin...
Seats worth saving: SAAB Sonett 3 restoration part 17

To be fair this is just an extraction, we don't actually fix anything this time. So the saving is limited to just removing the seats and related hardware. Eventually I will go through these, but that is a story for another day (because I haven't even done it yet). As usual the music in this video is courtesy of Karl Casey @WhiteBatAudio and the specific tracks are: Forever, Miami 1983, Pandora....

This is a bit different than my usual. I've been working on 3D printers for almost a decade at this point. I like to call myself an expert, but really that doesn't matter. What does matter is that I know a thing a two about a thing or two. This channel isn't just about car stuff, the original name was more broad. Its always been about things I found cool or neat. And I certainly think my 3D pri...
Ditching the Dashboard: Sonett 3 Project Part: 16

We're ditching the Dashboard in this episode. I am not joking with the thumbnail, seriously I wasn't sure what type of support I would find under the dashboard. I'm kinda glad they don't make 'em like they used to, this thing was weird. I've been spoiled by "new" cars. I'm still not 100% sure how you are supposed to take this thing out. But I'm glad I did. It's real nasty under there. And besid...

This is more like episode 15.5 to be specific. I apologize, nothing actually happens in this installment. It felt strange to give it a number without at least accomplishing something. The next video is actually interesting! I just gush about a new toy I got, show off the tub of the Sonett 3, and explain why I'm going to so much effort for this piece of junk. I also think it's necessary to reite...
Part 15 of the Sonett 3 Restoration Project: Dealing With the Body After Taking it off
zhlédnutí 296Před 2 měsíci
This video is so boring it wouldn't be fair to make you wait a month for it, so it's releasing out of sync. No action here. To be honest this is just footage I couldn't be bothered to put in the last video. I suppose I also clean up the whole removal process for the rear body. Where it will sit alongside the rest of the body for the foreseeable future, or until I trip over it taking out the tra...
Taking the Rear Body off a Sonett 3: Saab Restoration part 14

Yes I changed the channel name, do (not) be alarmed. The biggest milestone of the project so far! (aside from dragging it home) The rear body comes off in this part. Contrary to what it looks like or what the people on SAAB forums tell you, its actually not that hard. It's just an awkward part to manipulate, especially by yourself. I wouldn't have had to shimmy it around so much if the sides I ...

GLASSK!.... is the topic for today, Apollo would be proud. It's not terribly interesting, but all the glass on the car gets removed and boxed up for storage, I don't think we're going to be seeing it for a while. This is the last big step before the body comes off, and THAT is the exciting part. Not a lot going on here, and not a lot of noise either. I sure hope the windshield doesn't pop out j...
Saab Sonett 3 Restoration Part 12: Removing the Door(s)

I could have sworn this video was better when I last looked at it.... anyway. Who was it telling me to be careful with these again? Anyway, next step in taking the body off is getting the doors out of the way. So that's what I do. Do I do it the right way? No, of course not, that's not how we roll. I also don't bother showing you both, the doors are almost the same. Some updates to Blender now ...

This is part 11, not 12. Don't know what happened with the thumbnail........ Yeah yeah, I know they are not vacuum lines. Don’t care. I just say things. Even if I plan to go full restoration with this car, it still needs that manifold fixed. What better time to do it now? Anyway, a big milestone in the project. That new/old/not as bad manifold was the first part I actually bought for this. Foll...
Saab Sonett 3 Restoration Part 10: FoMoCo Carb Teardown and other stuff

Blows part 9 out of the water. This is starting to get into the good footage of this project. This little lawnmower carburetor is gross, but unlike the rest of the car it looks like it should survive. I clean up some of the other parts I had taken off, but they will get their own spotlight later.

Certainly, wasn't overselling that Title 🤨
The x-axis is over constrained to a point of overkill. One linear rail is enough for such a small tool head. Very cool project though!
Good call jumping at the chance to try Powder coating. I think some of the imperfection on the bezel is called "Crazing" Looking forward to your coating setup 👏👏👌👌
I love the Saab Sonett such a cool car. great video
It sort of just sits there in a pile on the floor, but I love it anyway. I’m really enjoying working on this little freak, can’t wait for it to move under its own power.
Not ugly at all! Wondering if any custom PCBs, metal 3DP/CNC'd part may assist? We'd love to sponsor and reach any potential collab! (PCBWay zoey)
Thank you Zoey. I’ll keep you in mind for my next project.
@@Ludicrous_Speedway You are welcomed all the time! If possible, may I know your E?
love the way you did it. Great job my friend 👍
Thank you. This is one of those projects where I really don’t have any complaints at the end.
I hope you took tons of pictures while taking them off 😂😂
I hope so too
By the way by any chance you know where to get the front glass?
Not sure if they still sell them, but try looking for Tom Donney Motors.
@@Ludicrous_Speedway in Fort Dodge?
That's the one, I'll do some more digging and see if anyone else has front glass. I have heard of a place in the UK, but that's a bit far.
@@Ludicrous_Speedway thank you Man i Will try to check donney motors
Keep it up man 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks! Will do!
Maybe you could try a lavalier/lapel mic?
I'm sticking with my shotgun mic for now, way better than my previous one (lapel mic on a stick). I've been filming with it for 5 or 6 months and it's really changed the quality of my video. Not that it matters, as that footage is going to sit around for the same time till I do something with it. I don't really want to deal with separate audio until I transition to a real camera set up. But as an AV guy I'll get into it eventually.
Great work once again
Appreciate that
Great vid man keep it up. Always looking forward to the next one
Thanks, it’s comments like these that make it even more fun.
Nice work!
Sonetts are all SAE (US) bolt and nut sizes on the whole body and Metric on the engine. Looks like your seat cushions are newer. It would cost over 1K to redo them. The Sonett is also a safety car. The seat won't go forward in a crash. The 3 point seatbelts will keep you out of the dash. Ask Buzz Aldrin the astronaut. He has said the Sonett saved his life in a terrible head on crash.
I wouldn't be surprised if the seat cushions were new. I keep finding evidence that someone else was in here before me. Most recent find was the mismatched washer stack on one of the transmission bolts, I don’t think that was factory.
Hey i upload a video with my car if you want to check it
I took a look. Pretty sweet! A little rough around the edges, but you have a good foundation there. I love the side mount exhaust. Is that a Painless Performance fuse box? I was looking at their stuff for when I need to make my harness.
@@Ludicrous_Speedway in all truth i dont even know how we make It run jaja a friend that knows a little bit more of cars help me
The seats look good
The only nice part of this car tbh. The centers are kinda gross, but If I swap those out for a cool blanket or something I think the leather will turn out fine.
Nice job, mate! Congrats on a finished project.
Guess what? I already make my saab start and ru 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉
Long time no see. That's awesome! Safe to say you beat me to it. Lol. So, where's the pictures.
I work with industrial 3D printers and I have an Elegoo Neptune 2 and I don't know if I should build one or buy a new 3D printer, I know it's fun but man, I work with 3D printers every day and I think when I get home I have to do something else but I really want to build one.
If you work with printers daily you probably already know the big con of building a one-off printer. There's no support, when it breaks or you discover some previously unconsidered flaw there's no one to blame but myself, LOL. My machine's greatest oversight is the placement of the hot end fan relevant to the extrusion behind it ends up directing the air at my print resulting in an unwanted cooling effect, so ABS has been splitting pretty regularly. Swapping the fan orientation results in the same thing with the hot side acting as a duct. It's just something I have to work around. When I finally get to adding a dual extruder system and airbrush compressor as a parts cooler I'll fix it. The way I'm considering packaging that all would put the hotends sideways and hopefully have a clear path for air. That's all part of the fun for me, hot rodding this thing is supposed to keep me busy enough that I don't feel the need to build a VZbot, we’ll see how long I hold out. I find the current generation of off-the-shelf printers pretty lackluster, I'd say go for it, build one!
Cool stuff man, I've been there too. Designing printers can be fun :)
Thanks! The hardest part about this is accurately documenting everything, every project supersedes the last. “This is my Magnum Opus, no this is my Magnum Opus.” This got eclipsed immediately, lol.
Interior work is always the worst for me, even with such open space
I would agree. I love 90’s-2000’s cars, they are fairly complicated but for the most part everything is separated into sub assemblies that you can address individually. I think that makes them pretty easy to work on, but this? This is just a mess of spaghetti directly attached to the dashboard. I don’t like this. Somewhere down the line I’ll build an internal structure for all the important bits, with the actual dashboard being just a skin.
I met spoke with and worked on a Sonett carb linkage with Jack Lawrence at a Saab Jamboree in Pennsylvania a few years ago before he passed away. Saw his Sonett race car. He was the quintessential Saab race car builder. Great guy.
I didn’t get into the hobby soon enough, but everyone who knows would agree with you. Glad this community is as great as it is.
Great to see a new video. Lovely lathe. SAABs need to be restored and not only those.
Yeah I know I know, there's no way a bigger booster is going to fit in there. It really looked like I might have a chance when it was still all together. Also, I know it's not terribly interesting, but this is the last video where nothing happens. It'll all return to normal after this one.
G'day great video mate 👍
Thanks for the episode. My first option for my project was S1 or S2 Lotus Esprit. Those are too fiberglass body cars... seeing this, i really need it for my next project...your project is so weird and cool. Where did you found it?
@GT1900garage The Esprits are beautiful, you can’t go wrong there. It’s my understanding they are built better too, more cohesively anyway. The Sonett is weird, Its essentially the floor and drivetrain from an unfinished Saab 96, where they just put a fiberglass body on it instead of finishing it. That was intentional, it’s to sneak into stock car races with the closest thing to a race car you can sell at a dealership. Lift off the body, build a rollcage and you're golden. As for where I got it, that was the next episode, but I don’t mind handing out some spoilers. My grandfather raced back in the 80’s, he also worked for Saab as a dealership liaison. One of the cars he raced was a mean Sonett. It was pretty cool. Everyone in my moms family had one at one point. I don’t plan to do the same races he did, but I still think I'm following in his footsteps. That car still exists, but I don’t have it. I got incredibly lucky finding mine, it’s estimated that there are less than 4000 left in the US, I think there's even fewer. After a few years of checking certain websites, this one fell into my lap. I randomly decided to check a popular auction website and there it was, within a few hours of me, so cheap it was basically free, and less than a few hours left to bid. Bought it sight unseen and dragged it out of a field the next weekend. It may look rough, but I’m happy. I’ve seen cars much worse on the market for absurdly high prices.
Nice plans. Looking forward to more
Me too, I think I'm going to make this biweekly instead of monthly.
You are doing a great job. When you are finished you will be a Sonett expert!
That's the plan!
This is footage that really should have been on the tail end of the last video, but that would bump it up to half an hour. Seemed like that was too much.
Now i'm all caught up and i'm waiting fo the rest of this. 👍👍👍👍
I'm tryin to make this a regular thing, shouldn't be too long
Great work. I was expecting something to go wrong with old thicker glass.

Smart to replace in these cases 👍👍
And now I have 2 to play with, that's a bonus.

Wait till you see how bent the frame is :). looks like the engine snagged something and pulled the rest of the car back with it.
Nice Project Car. Subbed and binge watching. SAAB FTW
Thanks for watchin'!
G'day great video mate
G'day I was surprised how big the starter motor was for a V4
Me too, but considering it's a tractor/generator engine I guess I shouldn't be surprised how industrial some of the parts are. and I bet it's the exact same part used on the v6 and v8 engines.
G'day it is interesting how far forward the engine sits in front of the front wheels
It’s basically a mid engine transaxle layout, but in front of the driver, weird. I bet the setup made more sense when they were still using the 3 cylinder 2 stroke from the older generations, it was much smaller.
@@Ludicrous_Speedway Agree
my first job was working on these when they were new.
That's pretty neat! my family has a similar history, I'm following in their footsteps with this thing.
