Premna From Training Tray into Bonsai Pots July 21, '24
In this video I put four premna into mame size bonsai pots from the group I trimmed just a few days earlier. I'm super happy with the results, they're so cute! The picture I referenced never made it into the video so I used it as the thumbnail.

Premna in Training Tray Cutbacks For Future Mame Bonsai July 19, '24

This group of premna has been growing for awhile now and has been grown on and cut back a few times. They are super healthy and the roots have moved into the lower portion of soil so that I can now lift the entire group out of the tray as one unit. After this pruning I'm finding some of the trees have developed enough of a branch structure to warrant putting some of them into bonsai pots, all m...

Ficus In Bonsai Pots First Trimming July17, '24 WARNING! Premature Bonsai Potting Ahead!
zhlédnutí 136Před 9 hodinami
Last year I put a number of narrow leaf ficus in bonsai pots way too soon. Now, even though they are in bonsai pots, they are in effect nothing more than trees in training and they will need just as much work and time before they begin to look like a decent bonsai. Today the only work I'm going to do on these trees is cutting the tops back and cutting out any ugly roots. They will then get a go...
Ficus Cuttings Into Training Pots for Future Mame Bonsai July 16, '24
zhlédnutí 128Před 12 hodinami
Whenever I pot up material for future mame bonsai I like to put the rooted cutting into small containers and then add a number of them to a larger tray filled with more potting soil. That way the roots can move out of their individual pots into the soil below, making them much easier to water as a group and making it almost impossible for any individual tree to fall over since the roots form on...

In this video I do the first major cutback on some neea I have been growing for a few years. As is the case when I begin the process of branch selection I'm removing about 90% of the existing growth. I started my neea collection by rooting some very thin cuttings that did very well but I recently realized that larger cuttings could root too so in this video I'm using only the largest limbs that...

Bald Cypress Bonsai Cut Back and Trimming July 9, '24
zhlédnutí 352Před dnem
Since I got this bald cypress bonsai I have changed the front, cut away virtually all the existing limbs and regrown a whole new apex. I let the apex grow unchecked in order to thicken so its more in proportion to the rest of the trunk. Today I reduce the apex and do some minor pruning on the rest of the tree since it really didn't need any major refinement at this point.

Premna Bunjin Bonsai Update July 5, '24
zhlédnutí 51Před 14 dny
In the heat of the summer tropical bonsai will usually need very regular trimming to keep their shape and this premna is no exception. In this video I remove a water shoot that just came out of nowhere and shorten emerging growth on the foliage pads. It's this regular maintenance that really creates the dense foliage pads that define the form of a finished bonsai.

That was fun
Thanks! I think in another year or so they could really be nice trees. Looking forward to it!
Looking forward to the potting video.
I use disposable nitrile gloves when dealing with sap. Still able to use my tools easily and no sticky fingers.
I have some of those and use them every now and then, usually when I'm going to be working for a longer period of time. For the purposes of these last few videos it was just as easy to grab my work gloves since I was only going to need them for a few minutes.
@@Bonsaibyalan makes sense!
But wouldn't the roots mat into each other? How would you separate them without damaging the roots?
I am guilty
Ha Ha! I've been doing it for forty years!
Very nice looking tree.
Thank you so much. These are one of my favorite trees to grow.
Reusable zip ties do exist. They have sort of a button at the pass through loop that releases it. Good luck with the tree.
I have never heard of that. I'll have to check it out. The tree has recovered beautifully and has sprouted all over the place. I'll probably air layer it again in shorter sections. I love the movement of the trunk so I'm looking forward developing them in the future.
Ive been searching for tamarind tree for bonsai, and i am happy to see your tree is doing well and flowering.
I'm not sure where you live but D+L Bonsai Nursery in Ocala Fl. has them for sale. Not sure if they ship but you might want to give them a try.
Please don't messwith he camera man :) I've been watching some of your vedios some times, i like the way you make it and gonna watch more
Sometimes I feel like such an amateur but I appreciate the kink words. Thanks!
Awesome tree and awesome knees!
Lovely tree. I think an oval would enhance it as you said.

Top. Obrigado pela dica. Brasil
Very helpful. I am working on a similar tree and I have a clearer vision of how to patiently proceed.
I think you should take off the stovepipe. I really like the tree and the trim you gave it.
Yes, I agree. In person it doesn't look that bad but in the thumbnail picture its just so glaring! The next time I do the maintenance trimming I'll create a new top. Since it has some branching on top I can root it and it will be well on the way to being a nice little mame tree. Bonus!
I like the basic structure except for the pointy top. Great character.
Wow Lovely Bonsai ^^ Like 9 My friend, thank you for good sharing Have a good relationship
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you! There's more where that one comes from! LOL
Beautiful shape, it looks so much more dimensional when it’s older
Thank you! I've really enjoyed working with this tree through the years.
Refused to let me do a thumbs up
I'm so new to all of this that I don't really know how to rectify that. Maybe it was just a glitch. I gave your comment a thumbs up so maybe that's something! I'm glad you liked the video!
Will a mimosa give similar results when made into a bonsai? Mimosa are invasive here in Arkansas. I can dig up as many as I please so I could afford to sacrifice them for learning.
I'm sorry but I have no experience growing mimosa as bonsai but since they are both legumes I think you could get very similar results. I say go for it!
Not that I "wacked" the top off 😄a pre-bonsai, but I have a bald cypress pre-bonsai that I attempting my very first ever air layer on.
I may be more "wacked" than I thought! LOL Good luck on the air layer! I've never tried it on bald cypress but I don't know why it wouldn't work. Let me know how it turns out.
Absolutely love how you've shaped this Shohin Portulacaria afra! The intricate details and compact form truly highlight the beauty of dwarf jade bonsai. Inspiring work!
Thank you so much!
Awesome tree❤
Thank you! In the next few days I'll be doing quite a few more!
You need to watch Graham Potter kazien bonsai. Cutting of a very large privet
Nice video Allan. It was nice meeting you at the bsf convention last weekend. Ficus is one of my favorite species. It looks close to a philipensis variety with the long thin leaf shape. But they can all be so hard to tell with all the crossbreeding in florida. Good luck with the banyan style!
It was good to meet you, too. Thanks for liking the video! I checked out philippinensis I think you're right so I will start calling it that from now on. I've got a few other ficus species I'll be working on in the near future. I know the names of some of them but a couple are also "mystery" varieties. Maybe you can help me ID those too.
@@Bonsaibyalan you bet. I’ll be happy to look at them on the future videos
If I remember correctly, in part 1 you say that you want to encourage the growth of aerial roots. Also yesterday, another you tube channel "We are the Bonsai Supply" did a live-steam where they worked on a ficus tree. Several viewers asked about aerial roots and the tree will only produce aerial roots when it is pot bound. Since you put this tree in a large pot, the aerial roots that you have will grow but you won't get any new roots until the tree becomes pot bound again.
Thanks for the info! I was really happy how the existing roots filled a good portion of the pot once I repositioned them. I'm really looking forward to watching this tree develop and I'll keep posting updates on a regular basis. I have the feeling it won't take long for it to be root bound again!
Pohon yang sangat indah
Thank you!
First of the first lol
Keep up the good work!
First whoop whoop 🙌
Break out the champagne! What did you think of the tree?
First
Trays are a great way for moisture to stay in your bonsai
You’ve given an idea for my smaller jades. It looks so much more interesting now.
I'm so glad you could use the info in the video! Knowing that people are actually getting something from my content makes it all worthwhile. Thanks for subscribing!
Just keep posting regularly that’s the only way the algorithm will reward you
Love the chat style
Do you prefer to have the lichen on them? It’s cam be cleaned off with a toothbrush and soapy water. I see a PA bonsai grower in Mexico doing this to his trees every repot.
I don't mind the lichen, I think the patina adds to the look of age and I have never really seen trees losing vigor because of it so I tend to leave it alone.
Love the new name what’s the inspiration? 😅 not me hearing the answer at the end
I really need to explain it more thoroughly in the "About" section of my channel. Just haven't done it yet.
Oh nooooo makes the wire a good idea 😅 I have a tree I had to bring in because of the wind
Do you put drain holes in the tray as well?
Yes, absolutely. I punch a hole through the foam about every 1 1/2 inches. Otherwise in the rainy season it would stay way too wet.
Thanks, going to try this method. Currently got a bunch of small cuttings in random little pots and it’s a pain to water each one.
@@user-nc8se9in8o It really works well for me. It also keeps them more stable so you can let them elongate without worrying about having them fall over all the time.
Very interesting. So there is soil in the chicken tray ; so the cutting grow out and into That? I’ve only done something similar with Kalanchoe and wandering plants but if it works for jade cuttings is should surely employ your method.
@@KareebaAvery I use this method for other varieties, too. Right now I have four trays of premna using the same technique. They're not only way easier to keep watered, growing them like this makes them much more stable. Grown individually without the bottom tray they would be constantly falling over.
2:43 I think that branch being slightly higher helps the design maybe shorten the branch above hmm to create that space you seem to be looking for. Just an idea
I know what you mean. If I bring that limb down it becomes a bar branch with the opposite one. I'm thinking of letting the base grow at the angle it's at and bring the outer portion more horizontal.
@@Bonsaibyalan that is a wonderful idea look forward to seeing this progress. I just started my first few and they are doing well
Thanks for the instructions for a beginner like myself. It seems so daunting. Especially with me starting so late with this journey. I may never see my trees all proportioned and ramification so detailed but I want to learn the process and enjoy it. Thanks
@@KareebaAvery Don't get discouraged! I have trees in all stages of development. I can get just as much enjoyment out of planting brand new cuttings with the anticipation of how they will develop as working on the refinement of finished trees. I suggest getting some material and start experimenting with cutting and trimming and I think you'll find, especially with smaller material, that you can get very nice results in a relatively short period of time.
@@Bonsaibyalan Thank you. I started with a couple of dwaf jades. I have a normal crassula that I want to make tree like and a boxwood that needs to be started .
I hope mine get that big one day😮
The best way to get them big is to plant them in large pots or even the ground and then let them grow unchecked for a couple (or more) years.
Actually I just potted some from 8 inch to 10 inch bulb pans. I'm then going to let them grow like crazy. I'll post a video to show you.
I have jade plant... started to work on it ....ur videos gives more information about bonsai
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. Please pass the word along. Thanks for subscribing.
Nice sir work.....i am from India.. ❤.
Congratulations on 100 subscribers
I thought I could make a little money doing this. Just think, I only need 900 more just to get started!
@@Bonsaibyalan it’s possible with the right mindset
That’s a lot of trees 😮
I'm a junkie.
Maybe change the front 🤔 inevitably it might be a good idea if the tree never thrilled you giving it a new front, angle and main tree line would be great for the future. I like the idea of turning it into 4 different trees
So if so facto that sacrifice branch ended up giving you 3 more trees idk 🤷♂️ but if you ask me that’s a successful outcome
I notice that the bark on your jade trees appears to be more grey - silver than a brown color that I see in my jade and other CZcams videos. Is it really grey or just appears that way?
These are really old trees, some around 20 years, and the bark does age to a muted grey color. I'll do a video comparing some really young trees so you can compare the difference.
Great looking material I love the soft angles on the last one slightly different to the sharp angles of the first 3
Ice cream containers great way to reuse an item you’d not otherwise never use
And They're virtually the same dimensions as many shohin bonsai pots so the amount of root manipulation is minimal.
