We are husband and wife with a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We work and create in Philadelphia, Penna and live on the 5 Acre Wood in West Chester. Our work is made from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes, and useable, long-lasting treasures-and when the old eludes us, we use sustainable materials. We used to make these items for ourselves, and now we make them for everyone.

For journal covers and pouch brands, we use full-grain vegetable-tanned leather*, which is a durable leather that develops a lovely patina over time with continued use.
*Vegetable tanning is a slow, natural, and sustainable process of tanning raw hides with natural, biodegradable extracts derived entirely from vegetable sources such as tree bark.

#art It has been heartening to watch the evolution of Søren's journaling practice, from bland journal pages to documented expeditions - completely Søren-ed and so shareable. We’ve simplified his card design into a free downloadable PDF! Søren tested it out earlier this week on our local hiking adventure to Harmony Hill. As Søren flipped through his cards for my camera, he said, “It feels lik...

🎉cool demo & paint box.🖌🎨
Excellent video, will make some today. Thank you.
One of the best turorial videos I've ever seen-- thank you!
bridge to terabithia moment
I wish they had a handle on them so you could carry it like a purse if that’s all you wanted to walk out into the field with a couple of watercolor water pens, and you wouldn’t need anything else
I just have to tell you what an amazing teacher you are...I have ZERO questions!! Thank you so much!!
This looks genius! It will be a purchase before the end of 2024, hopefully before my autumn trip to the Northern Adirondacks. Quick question though - if I wanted to paint on a paper larger than 4x6 would it be possible to clip onto it somehow? Not a deal breaker as i like the idea of the smaller size. But I am curious. You seem to have thought of everything here. And it's BEAUTIFUL!
why does the sendak feel damp to the touch and why is noone mentioning it? is there a way around that?
I just love this! I love it when art is combined with curiosity and exploration - an “I wonder what will happen if I…” approach. 😃
Thank you for sharing. I am so excited about trying this myself. I learned so much!
Could you glue the fabric on top instead of threading it?
Great painting, your pochade box is so cool!
I absolutely love mine, i will be getting the extra watercolor insert asap🖤
oh my god thank you! Iv been doing this all different I was wondering how that fap was made and here iv been glueing it down entirely! THANK YOU!
Ive loved all my items from Peg and Awl. They are built to last and inspire. I also am proud to contribute to a family run business. Feels so much better than an Amazon purchase. Nothing terribly wrong with Amazon...I think? I just adore this team and their vision of quality, repurposing and thoughtful items. Keep up the work and make it an epic day! It usually is when I break out my sendak mini. It's perfect.
This was excellent! Thank you!
My pleasure - thank you for finding us!
Is there a less expensive option for the tripod
easy on the soundtrack i was waiting for some sort climatic experience
I know this is older but I just found this channel... WOW!!! LOVE these videos and your content in general! Thank you for sharing your experiences and journey of bookbinding. Absolutely Awesome! 😁
My pleasure Victoria! So happy you've found us!
Good, straightforward video. Interesting approach with the fabric edging, and I like the idea of recycling leather. Also the headband idea.
Aww, I was going to buy one of these & one of the artist rolls as well. To show off on my main channel, until I saw this. I have many because these days truth seems to be offensive to people. Anyway, when I saw it was machine stitched it broke my heart. For the price I had always assumed it was hand stitched. Which makes a massively huge huge difference. Machine stitched means stiffer joining which leads to breakage at the seems. No matter what one does to combat this the leather will always remain stiff until it breaks. Hands stitching can be just as tight but always remains soft, playable. Therefore softer, less likely to break at a seem and a longer lasting product. This is why those whom know always prefer a handmade quilt over one made with the aid of a sewing machine and why quality leather products that need to last, saddles, saddle bags, etc are hand sewn. Because machine stitched leather will not hold up to the test of time. One could buy that box, put it in a closet and never use it, but the seems will still rip. Edit: with all that said I still love the design of the product. I love that it is an independent business. I wish them all the success in the world. I'm just not willing to spend full price too find out how long that'll last on the shelf compared to everyday use. With everyday use of give it 6 months, no more than a year before the seems rip.
😂 Phillip, are your shoes hand stitched? 👞 👞? It's not how the leather is stitched, it's the quality of the leather. I'm a leather crafter, and I know stuff. Cheers.😊
Cheaply made book that appears of quality. Nice nice nice. Well done.
Nice! I know you specialize in leather work, but I’d definitely love to see this in a more vegan friendly option.
What easel is that i absolutely love it so compact 😍
They make that easel it’s available on Etsy. Just be ready to spend like $600 - I wish was rich 😭
Will you guys bring back this size? The one on your website looks smaller. I need this larger size. In Moss.
Way over priced.
its beautiful
Does anyone know what the inside dimensions are for the drawers?
I love your books and thanks for this tutorial!
Very good!
Incredible video! Total fan, subscribed! I will share my journal on IG and tag Y'all in it! Thank you!
Thank you Michelle!
Awful handwriting
Cool artist n vy inspirational
Love the painters box!
This is a wonderful video, @Peg & Awl!! I'm a new discoverer/subscriber but I've been looking for this kind of binding instruction for years! You make it so simple! I have not been able to even follow others. It seems like they emphasize how it should look more than just how to do it! Needle under the prior signature's thread in the direction you are going... or maybe I need to review before I actually do this! LOL! I could have your videos in a loop because you are so easy to listen to!
what journal are you putting in the outside pocket?
Which pouch fits on the sendak? Is it the spender? I've seen photos on internet but not sure which one 😊
Annoying damn noise!
Well done. Thank you.
Beautiful work 💗 Thanx for sharing!!
I love watching this and want to come work for y’all! Love handmade everything!
amazing!
Nice bit of kit but. ..check the price, jeez.
Thank you. I love your hands. You put your hours in !!!! Best, Gregory
Very nice job explaining everything
Very impressive.
How long is the thread? I forgot to measure it and now I’m done sewing :(
I love everything about this video, and your other videos about bookbinding. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you for sharing!
Do you have to do the knots for the swing too??
Prob too late for a response but u can just tie regular knots at the bottom if u prefer. They may stretch more & you should probably double knot for safety but these look extra safe.
Very sweet
