We are Arlin and Lois. We live in South central Pennsylvania.We live on a dairy farm and milk around 290 cows. We raise all our heifers. Our 3 children, Willie, Lori and Alex all help on the farm. They all have their own places but still come home to the farm.
We also have some goats, mini horses, dogs and cats on the farm.
Come along with us and see what farm life is all about. It's not for everyone but we sure enjoy it.

They make a animal repellent that you can get in bulk that you can put in a spray form they use it for deer groundhogs other animals that really take up a lot of damage
The owner of Sollenberger silo told me that story. Said it was the worst accident they ever had. Didn't realize that was your farm!
I'm good friends with the owner of Sollenberger silo. He's a good man. The accident happened 29 years ago. It was a really rough time when it happened. I don't think about it real often anymore, but when I was recording this video, it brought back a lot of emotions with it.

Ground hogs are a big problem every where got rid of 2 this year all ready
Do linebacks milk as well as Holstein and Brown Swiss ?
We have not had a lot of experience with Brown Swiss, but we feel they milk just as good as the holsteins.
As far as the ground hogs go I feel for you, that is so disheartning, We use to have major problems with ground hogs in eastern ontario, but the koyote population has grown enormously the last 30 years and the ground hogs have pretty much disappeared.

First time here. I see you have lineback cattle. Could you comment on the advantages/disadvantages of them ? Thanks and God bless
When we started, we mainly just liked how they looked. Once you have some, they kind of grow on you. As far as advantaged, one advantage is calving ease. We seldom have to pull any calves in our first calf heifers. The linebacks are a little bit smaller frame animal. Milk production is similar to the holstein. The lineback marking will usually dominate the holstein for a couple generations. So a lot of ours have a fair amount of holstein bloodlines in them. We breed with all bulls, so we usually have both holstein and lineback bulls in with the cows.
@arlofarms thanks. How do they do with milk components? Also I've heard they are good grazers and can do well with less grain. And you already answered my question about the dominance of the markings. Thanks
@@gmar4454 Components are similar. We feed all our cows the same TMR, so not sure about how they do with less grain.

We have Holstein and Linebacks, with a few other crosses in there to. We have bred for red and white cows for years, so a lot of our herd is red and white.

I'm new to your channel, what prompted you to cross breed your Holsteins with the linebacks? And how does milk production compare with straight Holsteins? I'll catch up on some of your past videos. I'm sure you've had some of the questions before 😊. You certainly have a nice looking herd of animals.
Milk production is very similar to the holstein. About 30 years ago I bought a lineback springer at a heifer sale and I guess we really like the different markings on them.
@arlofarms Thank you. Glad to hear that. I have wondered in the past how diverse, Holstein genetics are with so many people using, "the best" of the breed. Might not ever be a problem, I don't know. I like the color in your herd though.

Planted a lot of Sudax. It made great feed, especially for hiefers. We also used it to stretch corn silage for the milking cows. But it's a fickle crop, you have to get it before it gets to tall. Doesn't direct cut very well above 3'. Hard to mow and wilt above 6'. But it makes some good feed!👍👍
