Adventures with Doug & Jackie
United States
Registrace 7. 11. 2015
We are a couple of middle school teachers from Georgia who retired recently to head out to see the world. Our 33 foot Winnebago will be taking us, along with our dog and cat, to lots of State and National Parks around the United States and maybe some nearby breweries. It is probably our background in wildlife biology that makes us want to explore everything we can and maybe share a few of our experiences along the way. We sail the ocean with family and friends from time to time, discover new hobbies (like breadmaking and glass art) and explore things close to home, too. Read our blog for the latest adventures and stories at AdventureswithDougandJackie.com.

I got started on this breadmaking journey using Ken Forkish's book "Flour Water Salt Yeast" as a guide, working through the many recipes. This is his recipe for a basic white bread loaf that makes delicious toast or thickly sliced for a hearty sandwich. So this is Saturday White, that I made on a Monday. Breadmaking: Honey Oat Pain de Mie

(My recommended supply list is below) A Pain de Mie loaf is typically baked in a Pullman pan of railroad fame and is a rectangular loaf that yields nice square sandwich slices. I had leftover holiday eggnog that I substituted for the water and it delivered a bread with soft crumb and crust, however not as full a rise as I expected. Good demonstration of how this loaf comes together, with just a...

My Year of Bread

(My recommended supplies listed below) At the turn of the calendar page into 2021, I reflected back on one aspect of the past year that was a positive for me: learning to bake bread. As it happens I was gifted a book considered one of the bibles of breadmaking for Christmas 2019: Flour Water Salt Yeast by Ken Forkish. Thus began my journey deep into the world of baking bread - from basic white ...

Hiking Natural Bridge
zhlédnutí 35Před měsícem
Natural Bridge State Park in Kentucky's Red River Gorge area is a very scenic spot and has some great hikes. This is just one of them. It's pretty cool that there is a chairlift/skylift to take you to the top of the mountain, if you choose, and it can be either a one-way trip or roundtrip. We opted to take the skylift up and hike back down to the parking lot - but it was a lot more of a hike ba...
Solar Fountain Number Five

For my fifth glass solar fountain for the garden I picked a rather large bottle for the base and added a gold edged plate and punch bowl. The result was a dominant piece among the other flower containers on my deck. The piece needed some touch-up coloring, so I went a bit wild with alcohol inks. I also included a repair to a glass flower that had been damaged to give you an idea of how you can ...

Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio has plenty more caves and cliffs to explore, so I combined our next hikes to Whispering Cave, Conkles Hollow Gorge, Ash Cave and Rock House Cave and Gorge. Exploring Canyonlands Island in the Sky
You have found your niche! Wonderful eye for color and shapes. I'm trying, but with the thrift prices skyrocketing, it's hard to find such beautiful pieces as you use. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the compliment. I agree about the cost of glass pieces and the darn silicone. But wait until next week for my next teaser video with my BIG DAY haul of glass from two other sources. (I occasionally drive to a more upscale area to their Goodwill store, which often has more of the larger pieces).
Vos créations sont vraiment belles jaime beaucoup, comment en avez-vous eu l'idée??? Bonne journée et au plaisir d'un prochain tutoriel. 👍🌟🌟🌟😍
Once again, thank you for being such a good supporter. I am happy that it brings some joy to you. Just wait for my next teaser video about my BIG DAY haul of glass.
make a windchime out of the blue glasses.
@@SS-wu5du I might try that sometime. Good suggestion.
My compliments for the video & effort.
Bravo!
How long will the silicone securely hold outside? Gorgeous work!! ❤
I haven't had any problems with it here in the South for several years. The pieces I would expect to separate would be some of the larger hanging ones, yet I have only had one where the hook separated from the base. Other pieces that came apart were due to a paint layer between the glass and silicone that peeled off. So far so good.
Delicious recipe 😊
I hope you got a chance to bake a loaf or two. Now I think maybe I should bake some this week - YUM.
One of these days, I'm going to try sourdough. What is my fear? I do not know.
I didn't know you made bread,but I'm new here.
Can the glass be cut just take off broken stem parts???
I suppose you could, but I'm not ready to do too much of that. It was OK drilling holes through plates and bowls to make flowers, but not really set up to start cutting glass. I have carefully broken off some of the plates that were broken using a small hammer, gloves and safety glasses. Just be careful if you try it.
@@adventureswithdougandjackie Thanks. I’m just looking at this type of video. Getting curious on all the capabilities. Keep posting!!!
My pieces are still intact so haven't had to do any repairs, but in watching you remove silicone, I began to wonder if you used a heat gun, would it soften the silicone making it easier to remove? I'm learning much from you. Thanks for sharing.
I haven't tried a heat gun yet, maybe the next repair! Thanks for the nice comments.
what kind of glue are you using?
I am using 100% silicone. If you look at the description for the video I have listed the supplies used.
What a fun idea. Thanks for sharing, they are stunning❤
That turned out so pretty, you do good work
Wow mr doug ou est-ce que vous trouvez les beaux vases que vous utilisez?vous êtes incroyable et j'aime beaucoup vos créations elles sont magnifiques merci de partager votre talent et felicitation 👌🌟
Thank you for those kind words. Finding the right glass pieces just takes a lot of searching. And then you end up with lots of random glass that you hope one day you will use. 😄
I was just about to ask why you use silicone and not epoxy and then you said it. ❤
I FAST FORWARDED THE VIDEO...🤭💛🤭

Glass is too big
The nice thing about this hobby is that you have all sorts of creative options, plus it all just depends on what you can find out there.
Why silicone it together the water will keep it sturdy enough
I don't want to leave it to chance that the bowls won't fall off. Between the squirrels that come to drink and our dog, grandsons and such, I want to be sure everything is sturdy. And I also don't want to have moisture inside the large vase bases. Good thoughts, though. Maybe that will work out fine for you.
Why silicone it all down bc you cannot break it down to clean for next yr and the bell should have a few lights on it.

Who knew?!
❤❤❤❤ your ideas and work…giving me inspiration! Thank you
I just stumbled across your channel and love your fountains and other glass projects. You do a great job explaining the process. I was wondering whether the silicone caulking would hold up to the triple digit (105-110 degrees) dry heat we have throughout the summer? I’ve used E6000 before on a glass sculpture and some of the pieces came loose over time.
I haven't been through Temps that high, so I don't know. If you need a more reliable seal on structural elements, then try epoxy. I like the flexibility that silicone gives me for repairs and such. I appreciate the comments, good luck.
love the glass designing.....have you ever considered using seed beads on the rim of the top piece?? It would give more colour. I would have used the blue plate on top of that yellow large vase, then top it with the clear top piece......I would use more colour, and I am loving watching you.
Beautiful work…very creative ❤
Gracias, hermoso quedo!!
Preciosos tus trabajos! Gracias!!❤❤❤
💚GORGEOUS💙
Loved watching the elements of this craft…repairs…reimagine…really beautiful! I’ll look at thrift glass differently!
Is E6000 a better choice??
I guess that is personal preference. I haven't used it yet.
That's my favorite color! You matched the glass clear piece almost perfectly. I had no idea this was how you could color glass. I have about 100 bottles of alcohol ink that I use for my painting. I have the exact same crystal pieces you used too. I know what I'm doing this long memorial weekend. Woo Hoo. Thank you, Doug! Blessings ~
I have found that the alcohol inks, when coated with final clear gloss hold up well for indoor pieces. Outdoors they tend to fade away after a bit - depends on the color. There also are a few spray paints that look like translucent frosted "sea glass" that would be fun to try, probably on larger pieces though. Let me know how your projects turn out.
Very cool! (literally) 😊 Thank you for your videos! I've been collecting different pieces of glass for a few yrs now but haven't had the time to make anything. Now is the time. I love how you used the fairy lights. I have extra pkgs of them from the holidays. I'm not finding the interesting pieces of glass or dishes as much at our second hand stores. I think they get bought fast since a lot of people now make the garden art to sell. Hobby Lobby has some nice and different pieces of glass ware, though its more expensive. We live in the southwest, and have been in a horrible drought for the last several yrs. We have a well on our property, so water is precious. I never thought about it (running the water) before we moved here, and we were on city water. We're not planting many flowers. In fact we're going to re landscape with drought resistant plants and trees, with more hardscape. So, my glass garden art and flowers will be in the raised flower beds, my hummingbird and bird baths on both patios, as well as some recycled glass feeders for the birds. It makes me feel good to recycle. Every bit helps. I'm going to see how to make the dandelion flowers out of plastic bottles next. If it weren't for great people such as yourself for making videos, none of us would learn. I'm a visual learner. Thank you again, Doug! Blessings ~ 🌷
I agree about the "availability" lately, but of course that depends on people actually donating their unwanted glass. Some of the bowls and glasses I find have small chips in the rim, which would not make them suitable for use anyway, hence the donations. I also think thrifting and upcycling is much more popular at the moment. Probably my fault for posting these how-to videos! What I really miss are small saucer plates and glass candle holders.
Beautiful! What type of paint are you using for your glass? Thank you :)
Thanks for asking. I use small bottles of alcohol ink, which is available in craft stores, in my case Hobby Lobby. That ink holds up well for indoor applications, less so for some of the outdoor pieces - the color may fade after a year. I also give them a finish coat of clear gloss. There are also a few specialty spray paints that give a translucent frosted color to glass, (think sea glass colors), but I have not tried them. Let me know if you do.
Merci beaucoup pour la visite, c'était vraiment intéressant et aussi impressionnant 🌟👍😘

Felicitation mr doug votre création est superbe c'est vraiment intéressant de vous regarder. 👌👌👌🌟🌟🌟🌟😍

Thank you! 😊
YOU SAY SILICONE, DOES THAT HOLD LIKE E6000 OR JB WELD...🤔
Epoxy would be more permanent, but for everything I build the silicone holds just fine. Besides, it can be undone in case you have to replace or repair a piece. At least that has been my experience. I'm just more comfortable with silicone.
