Printer ink is so expensive because it's literally a scam. Only a few different companies are allowed to make printers so they lock out companies from being able to make generic cartridges and charge whatever they want. HP's cost to make printer ink is a couple of cents.

the towels are pretty good. they come in rolls from a sanitizing facility, way better for the environment and way easier to use than any of the other options

There's nothing really expensive about the ink. It's the cartridges. They put a chip on them so that your printer can only use theirs. Cannon has a monopoly on ink for their printers, and hp has a monopoly on ink for theirs. If someone tried to start a cheap printer company, then they'd end up dead like the Boeing whistleblowers.

I can answer what happens with the towel one, as I used to work at a grocery store that used those kinds of hand driers. Short version is that the clean towel is wrapped around a rod, dirty towel wraps around a different rod. As the towel is used, the clean towel is unrolled while the dirty towel is rolled up. Eventually we pull the dirty towel out and stick a new towel in the box.

When I bought my printer it was $20. Black Friday deal, a really good price for the features. The cheapest black cartridge for it is $18. The 3 base colors are combined in one cartridge. If you run out of yellow and blue is full, you have to replace all of the colored ink, basically throwing out good ink
