The Tour du Mont Blanc Trail - 2:44hr - No Music, No Voiceover, Just Hiking
If you really want to see what it was like to hike the TMB, this is close. I trimmed down the nearly 7:30hr of footage I brought back from the trip down to this 2:44hr monster of a video that still kept almost every clip I shot. If you want to see a much more "presentable" format, I spent far more time on these videos:
czcams.com/video/7Y1qF6CuHrE/video.html
czcams.com/video/fouEM33J4Us/video.html
czcams.com/video/VYyufu80BO0/video.html
My base weight was 11.31lb / 5.1kg according to my lighterpack, although I suspect it was heavier since I didn't get a chance to properly weigh it at Thibault's apartment, and the weight at 02:16 included food and water. All my gear worked wonderfully, my Dandee 35 (review here: czcams.com/video/vuWsRSyVAWU/video.html) felt incredible the whole way, my XMid 1p Gen 2 was ever better than expected, and my XLite Womens + Enigma 20 combo was rock solid as always.
lighterpack.com/r/qan92n
For this trip, I switched to shooting my videos on a Sony ZV-1 rather than my A7iii with 24mm lens since it offers similar features (hlg/slog) to my A7iii, while being significantly smaller/lighter and having a zoom lens, which I miss. The sacrifices in image quality are worth it for these types of hikes, and it has some significant advantages: the aforementioned zoom lens, a better internal mic, and most importantly it has gyro information alongside the video files that allow me to stabilize the footage to buttery smooth success in Gyroflow. With my A7iii, stabilization was always difficult, so I mostly used it for static shots. In addition to the ZV-1, I carried my trusty GoPro Hero 6 which I stabilized using ReelSteady, and there's even a few clips I shot on my S22 when I wanted something quick. The 8K is actually not bad, and doesn't crush the fine details like the 4k modes, although it pales in comparison to the ZV1 or GoPro, however I'll be interested to see how many people can tell which shots are which.
I edit and grade everything in DaVinci Resolve 17. The text was done in the Fusion vfx editor within Resolve.

2023 Year of Adventure

2023 was a wild year in so many ways, I sometimes with I could make 2-3 end of year videos just to cover it all. To everyone who joined me, thank you! I used a variety of cameras this year, mostly my A7iii with 28-200mm, ZV1, and I finally upgraded to a GoPro11 after years of squeezing everything I could out of my 6. The GoPro footage was stabilized using ReelSteady, and the ZV1 was stabilized ...
106 Miles on the Superior Trail

In early October I took a few days to wander on the Superior Trail. And it truly was wandering; I didn't have a schedule at all. The only plan was to start at Castle Danger and hike north as far as I wanted each day. Throughout the roughly 5.5 days of hiking, I met many wonderful people, got hailed on, discovered new knee pain, read a few books, got up way too early, strengthened my legs, forde...

For a while now I've been using the Dandee Packs 35 as my primary backpack for adventures. Although it hasn't replaced every pack for every adventure, it's the one I reach for the most. In August of 2022, I went out to Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains to get away for a bit. Here's the path I took: caltopo.com/m/8ECH6 Here's the gear I carried, it was the same as what I took on the TMB: lighterpack.com/r/qan92n Only adjustments was that I also brought my Insta360 OneX/corresponding pole, and I didn't need my charging brick. (Watch at 1440p or higher to avoid compression artifacts) I've had a dream for years to shoot an entire backpacking video on a phone. However, I didn't want it to *look* like it was shot on a phone, and for years I never even attempted it because the video quality from most phones was meh at best. This is just a family video just to document a weekend trip. Nothing too fancy, great to get out into the woods with the parents. Full disclosure: this whole video is technically just a camera test! After the collegiate loop last year, I've been wondering how to make videos better and easier, and one of the biggest issues has always been that my a7iii is 1) big and heavy even though it's small for a FF camera and 2) has terrible stabilization. We went to the Solitude Trail 2 years ago when a forest fire scotched our permit for Glacier National Park. Loved it. When the GPS map or even the paper map disagree with where the trail actually is on the ground, we have learned to follow the trail on the ground. We look for trail confirmation-blazes, cairns and especially saw-cut logs. We, of course use GPS, map and compass to get a more general idea of where we are and where we are going but it is not unusual for the GPS and map to be a bit inaccurate.

I’m about to head out from Chicago to the black hills for a night to the bighorns the next day and have to be back by Wednesday so I’m going to leave the park Tuesday morning. Just exploring with no plan and a Garmin in reach for someone to find me if needed. I’m 21 and this is my third trip after the breakup every young man goes through. It’s been a little over a year since I started going on trips outside of the north woods where I grew up. So far solo camping in the blue ridge mountains south of the smokies, been camping alone for two weeks in the Tongass on ABC islands, and I highly recommend going to the islands in the Tongass for wildlife. Anyway great video I’m excited to connect with your experience myself

Hey! Just got a chance to listen to your audio at home on my headphones now. Overall I'm very impressed with the production quality. Everything looks really professional and high quality. I agree with you on the voiceover audio though. It is certainly good enough, but is missing something to give it that extra little polish. What does the current processing of the audio look like? I think it could use a little bit of EQing to remove some of the boominess, and I hear some parts that could benefit from a de-esser. This might be just coming from my music production background, but it might benefit from a tiny bit of almost imperceptible reverb to make it sound like it exists in a space, although maybe that is a total faux pas in voiceover work. Because you don't really want it to sound like you're recording it a room, but a little bit of controlled reverb always tends to make the audio sound less dry. I'm not very experienced with processing vocals, but I'd be happy to take a look at it together to see if we can figure something out, if that is something you'd be interested in.

It’s impressive to see you cover that amount of traveling through not only such gorgeous country and the time you took to articulate your thoughts and feelings when you were off the trail. Panic can give way to fear and confusion but you dealt with it very well, which shows your experience in the wilderness. Traveling that distance in that varied rugged terrain was impressive to watch and I want to thank you for sharing your video with us! Bravo on such an incredible adventure! Now days my trips are from my bedroom to the kitchen and back and depending on the energy levels that day, I sometimes feel a little winded. Loved and subscribed. ❤
