Kettenkrad gear box restoration. Futher disassembly.
Kettenkrad gearbox disassembly and further inspection. As I dig deeper I realize I will need a different snap ring pliers once this is out I will need a special collet but I've been thinking and planning ahead I think I'm just going to take a socket and cut a slit in it and utilize that. stay tuned the days and weeks to come to see my progress! wish me luck!

this is actually very fasinating (as usual), i wonder, is there anyway to test the gearbox before mounting it to the engine? Best regs and thanks, Luke
Great point! All I know is right now the gears halfway when they're turning the top ones are tight. So I'm assuming that the bearings are messed up or the main shaft is bent. So other than turning the tail shaft and working the gear leavers you would have to be sure it's spaced out correctly with the differential.
Where do you get your reproduction parts from?
@@evanmolnar1351 Hello Evan, thank you for watching my videos and thanks for the question. I got most of the parts from collectors on a forum on Facebook. You can search Facebook groups. Try typing in "Kettenkrad" and search. There is at least a couple of forums. I got some parts years ago and also from a person who used to specialize in making parts for the Kettenkrad.
What is a turret winder?
@@JMark-zk5pj hello thanks for watching and thanks for the question. The turret Winder is the device on the inside that enables the turret to spin around. You turn a crank handle that turns some gears. The gear then pushes on the ring gear that the turret sits on. This makes the turret move.
Very hepful like always !
@@alexyfretel5948 no problem Let me know what I can do to help you
Very nice collection thank you for sharing again. I know it makes extra for you much appreciated.
No problem! I like to share my interest with the world what technology nowadays it doesn't take much to just shoot a quick video. Thank you for taking your time with all your nice responses. Have a great week
Just wanted to drop a line "War Barn" I'm feeling very proud of you and your progress. It's very exciting for me to watch your films.Hearyfelt thanks! I want to say that post-war armor might very well be 45 or before. I think they were using war stock left over you know scrounging for any thing at hand kind of like you are doing. I think the Germans post-war had higher priorities then making armor-plate. Just a thought
Thanks much Mark I greatly appreciate your response! The chassis was built in Sweden during the war I like to remind people that this is an LTV 38 and then the Germans called it the 38t and then the Suides called something else but it is a wartime chassis. The Turret was produced by the Germans as well as the engine and transmission. I've been able to find some other things that are actually produced during the War.
I know braking one side to steer is a common strategy with treaded vehicles but it always seems like a waste of power. I'm sure the strategy is much simpler than the alternative since the differential does most of the work for you. Those were interesting and good looking parts. Thanks for another great video.
@@ddegn hello thanks for responding I hope you like my video makes me wonder what do the new armored vehicles use what kind of transmission and differential is considered modern
@@warbarn2510 Apparently turning treaded vehicles has been a difficult since their inception. I just read Wikiipedia's *Tank steering systems* article and it looks like there have been a variety of methods used to turn tanks. Personally I've only made small treaded robots. I always use two or four motors to power the robots. I use encoders on the motors so I can accurately control the speed of the individual treads.
Hello I know the experimented with electrical drive and some modern vehicles use hydrostatic drive to with hydraulics
Very complicated as always from the Germans. Do they make complete copies of the vehicle?
@@stevenslavicek9711 hello thanks for responding from what I understand over the years just about every part was made other than maybe the engine block crankshaft transmission and gearbox cases I heard there was someone several years ago who made three complete bodies. There's someone else is supposed to be making the bodies too so when engines run out I'm not sure how they will power these reproductions?
Nice to see some partse that i had here on my bench, some years ago :D

Nice Job ! you are so lucky to restore a panzer 38t (a dream for me)! have you some blueprints or mechanical documention or lot of photo like this kind of difficult system of this tank ? i am in an association, We try to replicate this panzer 38t for 100 years of battle of France in 1940.
@@alexyfretel5948 Hello I assume your name is Alexy? It is great you have enthusiasm towards rebuilding one of these !Thanks for responding yes, I consider myself very lucky to have this project. I am not a millionaire I was at the right place at the right time. I had to clear out all my bank accounts and get a small loan too. But I think it's worth it .I had other vehicles and I was able to sell multiple vehicles to get this project. Most people thought it was impossible to transform the post-war chassis back into the wartime configuration. But I'm doing it!😊 I have pictures that I have blown up from 38t reference books. One of the books is out of date. However I'm more than willing to share the pictures that I have. And if you need measurements I can also take measurements too it's nice meeting you and I hope I can help you with your project and perhaps you can help me with mine too? And hopefully we can coordinate and assist each other with our Restorations. Who knows maybe a reproduction part you're making I need as well.
@@warbarn2510 Nice to meet you sir "I was at the right place at the right time" WOW very lucky. i have this project in my mind for a long time when I was still in my engineering school. well if you need help i can try but I think you are one step ahead of me. i have some documentation if you want. and I am a volunteer at the armored museum in France so maybe even more documents of panzer 38t hulls. Where can I contact you? and i can't wait to see this little panzer running again !
@@alexyfretel5948 hello are you on Facebook? maybe I could send you a friend request so we can communicate via messenger?? It's a lot of work to make one of these however it is mostly all straight plates with a few exceptions. Have you seen Rolf tankman's reproduction? It came out really good.

I'm fine as long as you pronounce *aluminum* correctly. To find out the right way, say it in a video and someone will tell you. Thanks for another update. I think the wheels look great.
Cool, thanks!
Very very interesting. I'm pretty sure I'm one of the people who asked for more detail about the links. Thanks for making the video. Also thanks for the landscape video.
Glad it was helpful!
All German Halftrack tracks have needlebearing, to keep the trak friktion low and alow fast and dangerous higspeed :D later in the war some sdkfz switch to drypin tracks to save matirial and costs.
Makes sense. Thank you for your response! There were many tracked vehicles most had tracks designed just for that specific vehicle. I am not well versed in the wide variety of styles.
This is very interestibg....I would have thought the bearing cup was pressed in the tracklink.. I love the hollow guidehorns...Would probably save a lot of weight too...
Hello, Yes the outer cup of the bearing is pressed into the track. Then the needle carrier fits in that.
Thank you so much for explaining this to me! Didn't know how complicated these were. Apparently the bearings are for efficiency on wear due to higher speeds and much longer distance travel.
I think you are right. yes the bigger panzers and half tracks were actually carried by rail most of the time toward where the action was. The Kettenkrad had to go probably futher distances for it served many roles.
Thanks for explaining the way the tracks work.
You bet!
That wheel certainly wasn't designed for production. I'm no expert but I imagine there are lots of ways those wheels could have been made so they weren't so expensive. Fortunately for the Allies, the Germans overengineered a lot of their stuff. Thanks for sharing the video. I look forward to seeing the wheel fixed.
Hello you are correct and I agree with you. It seems the Axis industry was not concerned yet with making things quickly. Some car factories nowadays make 1000 cars a day! My quick math figures there were less than 20 Kettenkrads made a day! Granted the NSU factory was making other vehicles, bikes etc
interesting find...I wonder, was only the direct feed bin to the machinegun different or were the other regular storage MG ammo containers meant for tanks different too? Was this type of box also stowed inside the tank?
Hello good question. I know there were two big feed bins inside the fighting compartment. Presumably one for each machine gun there were storage bins for the main gun ammo in the rear of the turret. I guess another option to replenish the ammo would be to just furnished loose rounds and refill the belts?
Could you show us how the links work? I'd love to make some tracks of my own but for my life of me I can't find anywhere showing how they specifically operate. For example, how does the pin for each link stay in? How do the bolts stay on while the track and pin moves?
Hello KL thanks for the response and the question! I think it would be a great video to show how the links go together with all the bits and pieces. Give me a little bit of time I'll make a video or at least a short for you😀
Good thanks.
That turn out great, well done.
Thank you Steve! How I been?
Awesome!! Thanks for the show n tell!! The fan gearbox looks overly complicated indeed...I wonder if you need the high RPM one with a modern radiotor and modern coolants... Must be pretty difficult to find a radiator with a hole in it anyway... By the way, did you allready though about which unit or batalion you will mark this Kettenkrad?? Thanks again for the info! greetings from the Netherlands!!
Hello I envision it all painted all the same color late War dunkel. I'm not too concerned about markings but a set of Repro plates might be nice. That is what I call an icing on a cake kind of an item. A fellow collector and friend used a radiator from a British car I believe it fit into the housing. He did need to modify it but it did work and it keeps it cool. I'm not sure if modern lubricants Aid in the cooling of the vehicle you would think so though right? I have to look into it but I heard if you use synthetic oil that helps the engine run cooler. Id like to do that but I need to see the pros and cons of using synthetics. I am using synthetic grease and gear lube wherever I can. For these purposes I don't think it could harm anything. I mean if it wears less and a vehicle last longer and perhaps run smoother to me it seems like a simple answer. Now the engine might be a different thing with tight tolerances and multiple parts of the engine doing different functions it could affect things differently. I think in general it's okay to use synthetic in the engine as well.
Once again...Awesome! So its one part that contains the travel lock AND the rotating mechanism....I wonder if there is a lot of difference between Czech made parts or German made parts?
Thank you so much for watching my video thank you for the input I will try to answer your question the best I can. Yes the travel lock and the traversing mechanism are in one housing there is an additional stopping bar with a button for the people inside the turret. So you can lock this from below with the lever in the video. OR there is a bar, which I'll try to make a video in the weeks and months to come, then not only do you grab onto but if you push the button it connects to the locking mechanism on the traversing body. Your other question is a good one did they continue to use the Czechoslovakian Factory workers when they took over the plant? Then supplant their own work sheriffs and supervisors? Or was there a complete change of personnel they continue to use the Czech machine gun. Although they had to put their own marketing symbol on everything! I do have those symbols on the inside of the turret in several places and on my deactivated zb37.
@@warbarn2510 nice nioce! thanks for the answer!! i really love the work you are doing!! any plan on cotinuing with the Kettenkrad??
Hello yes I continue to Hopscotch from Kettenkrad to 38t. I've been waiting on some parts for the kettenkrad. other parts for a really long time. I have the brake levers so what that means is I can put on the stopping breaks and assemble breaking lever which goes through the Gear Drive. I hope to work on that beginning next week.
@@warbarn2510 Cant wait to see it! By the way, i had anothother question...(Hope you dont mind) How are the thin rubber tires attached to the kettenkrad roadwheels? are they shrunk on? or glued??
The rubber is actually put on a metal rim and then heated and then pushed onto the rim originally. I had a place who restores lift truck wheels do mine. They made a mold and poor polyurethane so it's not exactly original but just as strong perhaps even stronger
Dear "War Barn", Tanks for the good content you've been putting out! As far as the cover goes, I think you should consider stepping out of the box and try to reproduce it yourself.using the original as template. the worse could happen you know. I look forward toeverything you been doing. Greetings from near Pittsburgh.
Hello Mark! Thanks for the response. I appreciate your input. You are correct in that I need to make what I can myself. Surely messing up a small inexpensive piece of sheet metal would not break the 🏦. I consider this though an icing on the cake type of item. Needed yes but low priority. When I see an original item and period for this tank that I need. I do try and purchase them. Would you by chance be in the metals industry? I figured you might since Pittsburgh used to be the "Iron City" and steel producing giant.
Very cool... it looks great so far.
Thank you Tim! I appreciate your input. Thanks for watching 😁
i got a question: are you ever worried about taking these things apart and not be able to get them back together again?? The parts themselves probably cost a fortune....
Heck yeah I thought about that. But most of this work needs to be done I mean I have to take apart these things to see the damage on the inside most of the projects I'm building are from the ground up anyway
