Using Pigs to Clear Grown Up Farm Land
Our pigs are raised on some of the most grown up parts of the farm and are doing a great job clearing the underbrush and allowing me to get in with a chainsaw to reduce the number of cedar trees. Besides producing incredible meat for my community, I am regenerating a really poor part of the farm. Win Win!!!

Introducing the Livestock Guardian Dog to Sheep
zhlédnutí 458Před 7 měsíci
Our eleven month old livestock guardian dog, Sam, has been on the farm about three months and spent the entire time guarding our free-rage meat chickens. Now that we are done with chickens for the year, I needed to find a new job for Sam. In this video I introduce Sam to our sheep flock by first having spend a few days with a single ewe and then bringing the entire flock into his one acre paddo...
How I Keep Pasture Raised Meat Chickens Alive in Low Temperatures
zhlédnutí 759Před 8 měsíci
This past week our temperatures in Kentucky, and most of the Eastern US, dropped below 30 degrees. Low temperatures are particularly hard on Cornish Cross meat chickens. Especially when they are raised in a free range environment. With the use of a large hay tarp I was able to keep all the chickens alive through this cold snap. They go to the processor next week so hopefully I am done with havi...

They need heat lamps.
Yes, I thought about that but would need to get electric to them somehow.
i commend your patience, i could never 😂
Wearing ear buds helps! 🤠
Well done !!! Healthy Animals, Healthy Vegetation, Healthy Soil. Well Done!!!
Appreciate ya!
The Carbon Cowboys would love to see this. You should check out their content. They can teach you all the little technical details of what it is that you are doing. This is great. Love to see it.
Thanks for the suggestion!!
@coveychasefarm I love to see farming done with as few chemicals as possible. Th earth takes care of animals and the animals take care of the earth!
@@lanecalaway6733 you nailed it!
Good job!! 😊
Thank you!
Where do you live that it's 9:30 @night
Hi there! I am in Central Kentucky, just south of Lexington.
Nice work
Thanks!
Thank you sir! Looks great!
🙌
i knew by the glasses that i could trust this man
Too funny! Until I edited the video I actually thought I had my sunglasses on my head. 🤠
👍
Love the video and feeder design. Is there anything you think I should adjust in construction if feeding a wet mix Sir ?
Probably not. I was wondering if it would leak but I have to turn mine over if it rains as they hold water.
I know this is an older video. How do you feel about the turning radius. Comparing this to a Polaris SP 570. On paper, the Polaris has a radius of 12.6 feet, but the UForce 600 shows a radius of 29.9 feet. I am amazed by the difference. I like the CMoto and it appears to be a great value, but I don't want to be making 8 point turns in the woods.
I have had a Polaris (older model) and can make the same turn on the CF Moto. I know because I have a fence on both sides of my driveway and I am able to make the turn on the CF Moto same as the Polaris. I haven’t even thought about an issue with turning radius until your question.
You hit poor buddy behind you with the cornbread 😂
😂😂😂
Do you think your successs free ranging is due to giving them so much space in the brooder?
I definitely believe the key to raising healthy chickens starts in the brooder. Having more space, rather than less space, is key. Also, keep the chicks very warm. If they ever get cold or chilled you will have issues when they are about five weeks old. I think the coldness does something to their heart causing sudden deaths later on.
Would love to see a video on how to built the chicken shelter. Most efficient system ive seen
I have actually been meaning to film a video showing the shelter build as I have had several requests.
Would love to see a video on how you built these shelters and a supply list looking to do similar.
Coming soon!
Your going to make a bird of prey very happy 😂
No sir. Raised 2,000 already this year with no losses. I have an Anatolian Shepherd with them. Come see me. I will show you how to do it.
This looks like hawk smorgasbord. Yes, I'm a worry wart.
Anatolian Shepherd lives with them. No predator losses.
@@coveychasefarm OUTSTANDING!! I'm so glad!! Thanks for getting back to me, that was kind of you. 💕👍

Have you tryed to kerp some and breed them ?
I’ve never tried to breed any, but have heard it is difficult. Most of these Cornish Cross are a hybrid so I am not sure they can breed/lay fertile eggs anyway.
Came here to tell everyone not to do this, WAY too much waste - period. Ran two of them for a minute and tripled my feed costs. Don't.
I like mine, but harder to move around than what I expected.
Those are the nicest looking Tamworths I have ever seen. Do you sell breeding stock?
Hello - no, I buy whole litters of piglets from a few neighboring farmers and then raise them on pasture until processing weight. The folks I got these from have sold out of the pig business.
I like your idea of the feeding trough. Definitely excited to try it out. How are you liking your UForce by the way?
The feed troughs work great! Getting ready to make another one and something similar, but lighter, for our pastured chickens. I love the UForce. Would absolutely buy another one tomorrow if needed.
Do u ever fog up with the enclosure
I don’t fog up, but it gets really warm in hot weather.
What strain of Cornish cross do you raise, and are you going to raise Red Ranger again? It's a great show and great content, I love your system.
Thanks for watching. To be honest I am not sure of the strain, but they come from Myer Hatchery (I believe they contract a lot with Welp Hatchery). No, I don’t plan to raise any Red Rangers. Frankly, I like raising them better, but most folks around me are used to the texture of the Cornish Cross. In my system I don’t have any issues getting these birds to forage.
Good luck, chickens!❤❤❤
Fingers crossed!
Great work.
Thanks!
Thanks. You made an informational and instructive video! 😊
Thanks for watching!
Where can I buy such a knife and gearbox?
Hello, I did a very good job! Can I show you the drawing and the gear ratio? Or can I contact you?
Hi
Hello!
Nice job. Great data collection and extremely humane. Nice husbandry skills. Thanks again. Nice find on your channel.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
What kind of feed do you use? Nice work on the videos I’ve watched so far. Do u go from starter feed to grower feed?
Thanks for watching! I generally don’t switch feed but rather stick with a 21% protein grower the entire time. It is a non-medicated feed from a local mill only about six miles away from me. I have it ground the day I pick it up and will get 6,000 pounds at a time in a feed wagon.
Do you have a guide for how to build your chicken covers?
Hi there. I don’t but they are rather simple. I have had a couple requests lately so I will put out a video soon. They are 10’ long by 8’ wide with 4 support 2x4s ran every 24” up the width. On top is thin sheet metal (5 panels). On the back are two tires and on the front are two 2x4 legs. Very light and easy to move.
Nice build. Works great. No need to spend thousands. Thanks!
Exactly! After several months using them they are still going strong. I have actually built two more. I am also going to build something similar, but lighter, for the pasture raised chickens to add more feed space.
Which one am I eating this spring?
The big one. 🤣
@@coveychasefarm 🤣🤣🤣
Always badd ass good music with your videos!❤
🤣
Absolutely, my 15 9 1/2 week old Cornish cross are free ranging as well and almost as active as normal chickens in every way…the other thing that is possibly overlooked is just how bored they are in the small tractor cages……Mine go all over the place, sometimes staying together, going off in small groups or solo…..the freedom to roam is priceless. I get free fruit and Vegies regularly and they eat them…..I’ve never had chickens willing to eat extremely healthy food, I’ve found others to be much more fussy… mung bean sprouts, wheat sprouts etc……
I subscribed for the "Pig Move" as you sat on the pig! You sir, are a good dude!
Appreciate ya!!!
Look at those healthy🐷🐷🐖🐖
Great to see what your pigs are doing for your scrubby land. I would love to see that fire when you light it. You are a real encouragement to us to be able to see what good management can do to increase the health of farmland. Keep it up brother.
Appreciate ya!! It will be a big blaze for sure!
Another great educational video! I'm guessing that the pork also tastes better for being outdoor and free range. Interesting that the pigs stay clear of the toxic cedar trees. Other livestock such as sheep seem all to happy to munch on yew and end up belly up.
Thank you. Yeah, I have had no trouble with the pigs eating the cedar. They actually simply clear the brush, thorns etc around the cedars allowing me to get easy access with a chainsaw.
What fence charger do you use
I use a Speedrite 12000.
