    I worked at the coop arena in Manchester during its mid way construction as a labourer the first day there I sat down at break for a smoke and overheard a group of lads talking about how a lad threw himself off the catwalks above the stage area around a year prior to me joining the job not to mention the fact it was never reported no one ever caught wind of it except for the lads who went through the same shit industry we all slave our asses off working in the awareness is now there but at what cost when people still feel the need to do these things because of the shite conditions they are expected to work in and keep up with says it all when I used to imagine an office job being the ultimate suicide job but these days construction is more bullshit and less happy days especially for trades and labourers who are either expected to much of or turned down time and time again it’s also the only work environment I’ve been in where you want to fight someone and it usually ends up happening one way or another mostly with the boss since it’s usually them with the stick up their ass and the power trip either them or a coked up mong who’s on one sad really because it’s the only industry I enjoy working in you get a better sense of freedom and you can find some funny people as well as smart ones but that doesn’t change how scummy and corrupted it can be at most times

    I think it's always been a steady progression. Man power, water wheel, steam engine, oil engine, diesel engine, electric, hydrogen..........full solar battery (ultra efficient solar technology. Meaning no fuel bill) but the energy suppliers will buy that abd keep it locked away......because the world has to be consumers.......as money makes the world go around. Just like the song says!

    This is a load of BS with little knowledge of the construction industry. If there had been any reference to the flow of new orders there would be a realisation that construction is on the end of a piece of elastic tied to both the public sector and private sector commissioning organisations. Think on this, 50% of all construction is funded through the public purse so the Govt has a great influence on the health of construction. From Brexit we have seen astronomical costs in materials and a shortage of tradesmen, the latter due to Govt not investing time and effort to encourage apprenticeships, which is also compounded by the growth of sub-contract labour as a response to the 7yr cycle of boom and bust. I could go on about the state of the industry but we certainly don't need ignoramus' giving ill-informed judgements on a subject that they know nothing about.

    • @DemolitionNews1
      @DemolitionNews1 Před 2 dny

      For the record, this "ignoramus" has been writing about construction for the past 35 years. Over the pas 15 years, I worked side-by-side with a market intelligence provider, charting the cyclical rise and fall of the industry's fortunes. Under David Cameron, there was a concerted effort to change the balance between private and public funding. This initiative was continued under subsequent prime ministers. According to recent statistics, public funding actually accounts for less than 40% of UK construction (and could be as low as 25%, depending how it is measured). I would further argue that while the Government HAS failed in its commitment to apprenticeships, the mass departure of migrant labour in the immediate aftermath of Brexit was deeply damaging.

    • @clivewilliams3661
      @clivewilliams3661 Před 2 dny

      @@DemolitionNews1 I have been in construction for 50+ years and as a qualified Architect for more than 40+years working on both sides of the fence and have a good knowledge of construction companies practices and client procurement. By your own information the change to the balance of Private/Public finance is really only about a max of two decades or 2 boom and bust periods recently. If there is a slow down in wealth production then the first casualty is the capital project and that is true for both sectors. The loss of social housing projects since the beginning of 1980's has meant that the dampener on the system has been removed creating greater volatility. I have been through several boom and bust cycles and without doubt the biggest strain on the system is when we emerge from the depression and the market picks up, with contractors under pricing jobs and failing to get labour and materials for the price they tendered the job at during the depression period. That strain has caused many to go bust. I don't disagree that Brexit caused an immediate hit to the construction capability but the migrant workers only originally filled a void caused by failures to create building construction workers over previous decades. Also I would say that the quality of the work by those migrant workers was generally better than was available from the home grown ones.

    The mention of Lendlease rang a bell. Lendlease, an 'Strayan builder, was the lead contractor on the Oceanwide Plaza project in Los Angeles, the infamous graffitied hi=rise project abandoned by the Chinese real estate company now blighting downtown LA. They filed a contractor's lien in the amount of \100 million dollars against the company before they shut down in 2019.

    Whilst the Victorians had the foresight to provide a leap of infrastructure in UK it was created from a woefully low base, where infrastructure was almost non-existent. Also, the Victorians mostly rode roughshod over the sensibilities of the people, wiping away homes and businesses at will. In our crowded island today we do not have the luxury of creating massive infrastructure projects without the potential to damage irrevocably desperately needed homes and thriving businesses. HS2 may seem to be a flagship infrastructure project worthy of completion but we ask WHY? It serves to provide connection to London a tiny bit quicker, when we ought to be creating a national strategy to devolve some of the centrist policies into the regions. You might say that HS2 serves those regions but the likely outcome will be to ferry passengers into an already overcrowded city, the magnet of London will overwhelm any draw the regions may have. What is desperately needed is a rail infrastructure that interconnects the regions with each other to make those regions stronger and more effective.

    Apprenticeships, and probably more importantly "mentorships" is how we'll retain the skills that are mastered throught tens of thousands of hours in the seat and on the ground. Our trade can not be learned in a four year Apprenticeship, only the basics can! It's a lifetime of learning, because of changing weather and ground conditions, no two jobs are the same. And the work can be very varied...................so it's good to have a "old hand" in the gang to chuck their two penneth in, when a problem pops up.

      There are multiple reasons. The sector is notoriously cyclical so there are always ups and downs. There is too big a focus on turnover rather than profit which leads to working for next to nothing. There is widespread greed. And the business is multi-layered with sub-contractors working for sub-contractors. If you're at the bottom of the food chain, getting paid is a major and constant isue.

    House builders usually have fixed price contracts. The inflation on building materials made builders lose money. As such they have gone bankrupt. The building industry has the most corrupt unions because of the amount of government construction contracts there are. Unions can force these construction companies with government contracts over a barrel. These jobs always run over time and over budget because it's taxpayers money. The mafia in construction needs to be cleaned out and jailed for their anticompetitive ways.
