Why I didn't make much in 2023 | Recap and Goals for 2024
It's that time again when we look back on last year's work and make creative goals for the channel for this year. 2023 was a busy year for me, but not so much for sewing. What was I up to all last year that kept me from costuming? What does that mean for the channel going forward? Will I ever finish my Robe a la Francaise?!?

Starting my biggest costume project EVER | Robe a la Francaise gown pt 1

After planning, researching, and constructing support garments I'm embarking on my biggest historical costume project yet - drafting, sewing, and trimming a 1770s, silk robe a la francaise gown. In this video, I assemble the petticoat and figure out the basics of making a new style of dress from scratch all without a pattern. This is part of a series on making this gown. Do you feel overwhelmed when researching a historical garment or fashion era? Here’s my basic method for studying dress history when I’m starting a new costume project. Something a little different but still historical - we bought an 80yr old Minimal Traditional-style home in my husband's small hometown and are renovating it a little at a time and trying to honor the time-period of the home. WWI-era Fashion Recreation + CHANNEL ANNOUNCEMENT

I'm diving into the WWI-era/late-Edwardian-era of fashion with a dress from 1916 using pre-embroidered border cotton. I based my dress on an example from Patterns of Fashion 2 by Janet Arnold that featured a tiered skirt and several layers of embroidery fabric. I had to draft this dress from scratch, rather than use a pre-made pattern. Will I have enough fabric to make the design work? Will I f...
DIY hat and walking stick for my 1780s costume

After taking a little break I'm back with another fun accessories video this time for the 18th century. I'm making a walking stick or cane, a simple piece that makes for a great photo prop and can be decorated in many ways, and a classic silk-covered, begere-style, flat hat that was so popular during the time period. I wore both of these pieces to a Black and White-themed tea party last year. I...

This might not be historically accurate but a way of improving it for modern day..... use chord to stiffen, use the oriental knot ties to attach instead of eyelets for the straps, use elastic at the waist ties. I seriously need to make this.....

Do you realize that you end every sentence with an uplift in your voice, as though every sentence is a question? Did you know that this is extremely distracting and tiresome? I wonder if this a rich Valley Girl accent, or just an affectation? And halfway through this video, I can't listen anymore?

I made the Reticule. Technically I made 2 of them. So fun! Yes I own a sewing machine, but hadn't used it in years. I also used a regular old tape measure to figure it out and it STILL worked. The first one took me like 3 hours because I was figuring it all out and kept stitching over the two inch gap and relearning to use my sewing machine. BUT the second one took me about an hour. So great for beginners. Thank you for the video!

Thank you for this video and all the suggestions. In the past I have made 14th-15th c. garb but I’m now (May 2024) getting into Empire/Regency clothing. Having already looked for all those patterns you recommend and finding that the vast majority of them are either only sold as PDF (I much prefer paper patterns) or no longer available, I had to resort to patterns by ‘the big 4’ and make the best of it, modifying and adding adornments as shown in period illustrations.
